ot that annoying babiesrus pop up!!!

seriously, I wish the people who run this website would get a grip. That babies r us pop up totally covers the entire screen and sometimes I can't even click off of it. It has to be the most annoying thing EVER!!!!!

Get Firefox. Install it. You can get it for Windows, Mac or Linux.

Get Adblock Plus. Install it, with one of the updating lists.

Never see another ad.

pam, thanks so much for the encouragement. It's not that I can't do it, I had to learn how to keep my pc going, just am balking at the huge change. I could run Windows programs on a newer Mac (but WHY?). Why? My Photoshop CS2 is pc only but Adobe will let me switch, then I have to remove it from my pc. Now if I have a laptop, they'll let you have one copy on each, very strict. You don't dare cheat because the software communicates with Adobe for updates. Plus I upgraded to CS4 and that is only for PC, can work that out with Adobe. I got Lightroom, and luckily both pc and imac are on the cd for that but I can't have both. It won't work on my pc anyway because I don't have enough RAM plus there's a new upgrade out already! I have too many apps that are Win only, my genealogy program, Rootsmagic and an older version of Family Origins, enormous work invested in that (no Mac version yet). Winzip which I need a lot (maybe there's something on the imac for that). My fractals program (don't use it much any more). Couple other ones I guess I could live without. I've already spent about $90 on Fusion, maybe they will refund that, should check it out. Then I have to decide before a year is up if I want to spring $200 for a 2-year contract for apple care or wing it and use the web, my manual and intuition. Then should I invest in the Time Machine for backup? I don't think so, will burn dvd's and use external hard drives and do it myself. Then when my pc finally crashes, maybe I'll get a notebook or just get it fixed and keep both running, so much to decide. Another thing I'm dreading is file transfers, especially my huge photo files. The geek guy from BB got both my computers on the web via a router but just could not get them networked so they'll talk to each other. That means I'll have to run everything onto my external hard drives and hook it into a USB port on the imac and transfer it that way, might be very slow. Will have to learn how to make a file structure for my photos like I like to store them. So many little details to consider. I have decided to just scrap the fusion even if they won't refund me my money because it's just another hassle and I have a contract with Norton AV for my pc but would probably have to pay double to have it on the imac. There's better AV software out there, but Norton once I got used to it works very well for me. I know once people get going, they love their Macs. I do love that big screen, resolution is great, and photos on it look fantastic, color is astounding. The only thing I don't like is that web pages look like typewriter paper (portrait mode in photography), not wider and shorter like I'm used to. Maybe I can change that somehow.

OT: How annoying! New in-text ads

I had a difficult time figuring that thing out... When you are on the 'Disable' page it will say down below "Disable Vibrant Ads" with a "Click here to Disable". Click on this just ONCE. Click it again and you will re-enable it, lol. If it diables it correctly you will see the underlined 'Click here to disable' has changed to "Click here to Enable". I found it very tricky yesterday! Had to keep checking on GW threads to see if it had disabled the ads or if I needed to go back and click something else. By the way, I read somewhere that a member had to diable their FireFox program in order to get it to work. Hope you get it to work! CMK

Cutting torch popping a lot

Joel I joined Garden Web just to comment on your problem. Actually it was at my wife's suggestion, she has been an active member for some time. I loved my old Victor torch set, and it gave me incredible service until I made the mistake of lending it to a guy tearing parts off a car. He was too lazy to walk for a hammer, so he would make a bad cut, and then turn the torch over and use it for a hammer. The thrill of Victor became the agony of defeat. Popping in either welding or cutting, or even general heating for that matter occurs when the tip temperature exceeds the threshold for popping to occur. Contrary to intuitive problem solving, this condition is remedied by turning up the heat. The gas flow through the tip cools the tip body. You are aparently aware that the acetylene flame shouldn't be dancing off the end of the tip prior to introducing oxygen, however you may be being overly cautious and consequently finalizing your gas adjustments at a setting too low to prevent popping. I found that on occasion I would have a tip which would pop for no apparent reason, and I could always convince it to behave by taking the acetylene only flame out till it quit smoking (another starting reference point) going past that till the flame left the tip, backing off till it re-attached itself to the tip while noting how far you had to close the valve to go from leaving the tip and returning. This amount of valve movement will be recalled in the next step. When the acetylene flame is back in contact with the end of the tip, start to bring up the oxygen, but don't go all the way to a neutral flame just yet. When you are about half way to a neutral flame with oxygen, go back to the acetylene valve and open it about half of the amount you needed to back it off to get the flame to come back to the tip. Finish by increasing the oxygen to a neutral flame and you should have no popping. If this gives you a heat level in excess of what you need for your typical cutting jobs, consider dropping one number on the tip size. The gas savings will pay for the tip over a fairly short amount of time, and you will realize another benefit of having a more docile cutting flame which will allow more precision cuts and a narrower kerf. (I don't know if kerf is a welding term or not. I hear my wife say it when she talks about sawing wood.)

HA HA, times are tough so I'm guessing the ads will get bigger. They are like billboards now. I've been waiting for years to see the logo on the front page change but I guess that guy lost his job. It's a bit odd going to a home site in the summer and seeing house all covered up in winter.

If you prefer to keep using Internet Explorer, try this:

On IE, go to tools, then choose internet options. Go to the security tab, choose restricted sites, and click on the sites button. Add each of the following sites:

*ivillage.com
*.overture.com
a820.g.akamai.net
graphics.gardenweb.com
iv.doubleclick.net

Then you'll have no more annoying ads!

I agree about Firefox. I finally downloaded it and use the adblock feature. I never see an ad, survey or anything else no matter what site I'm on.

Pam, I was going to drop you a line, but no email address and I don't post on the CF. Saw you were interested in Mustang's homemade granite cleaner and just wanted to let you know that ammonia isn't advised. It can dull the surface.

Never saw the popup...my provider and the internet security software I have installed block almost every popup on most every site. It does ask me on occasion if I want to allow a particular popup.

I have Firefox and the Adblock feature (says it in the lower right corner of my computer) I still see the babies r us pop up.

jackiemcg, are you telling adblock what to block? I don't know where the babiesrus ad is coming from because I'm not seeing it, but adblock will give you a list of blockable urls. I have a subscription (free) to a filter list. When you first installed Adblock Plus it gave you a list of filter subscriptions for you to choose from.

I was allowing the ads figuring that they paid for this place, but this one is over the top and back to blocking I go...

But there are ads, and there are ads. The ads on every Google-served page are unobtrusive and context-sensitive. I have clicked on lots of them. But the whirling, spinning, blinking obtrusive ads? Never, never, for ANY reason, would I EVER click on one of those, even if it was giving away exactly what I was looking for.

that's the thing - I use firefox but normally I allow sites to serve up ads because I know they pay the bills. But what bills exactly are being paid? We have this completely crap message board software where you can't even find where you've posted or see if someone has replied to you and still we get big honking ads. Yep, this one is getting blocked.

Guess what? I use Firefox and I still get that particular damn ad, which alternates with the POLO ad. Double boo hiss.

For ultimate ad blocking,consider the Firefox extension NoScript. It doesn't miss anything,but you must "allow" sites that you want scripts to run on (you just right click on the NoScipt symbol on your taskbar,then select the script you want to allow.)

I use Firefox and AdBlock Plus and have NOT seen the Babies R Us ad (or any other ad). If you're using FF and ABP and seeing it, then something isn't right with the ABP configuration. As you can see in this screen shot, there are NO ads or pictures of any kind, not even on the right side. My filter lists consist of EasyList and EasyElement + EasyList

the point is - we shouldn't have to jump through hoops to avoid a nasty pop up flash ad that no one wants to see.

monica-- can you tell us how you get to "filter list" and how you have filtered all this junk out? If I click on ABP, I see a running list but I don't know what it means or what to do with it.

Open your FF extension list/click on Options under AdBlock Plus/Filters/Add Filter Subscription/View All Subscriptions
At this point you can cancel out of the preference box. A page of subscriptions will show the various lists. The two that were
recommended to me (USA) was EasyElement + EasyList. Click on the filters you want, a box will pop up to add the filter, hit OK. ABP
is updated to include these filters. I think you have to restart FF for this to take effect.

I finally got to see the babies r us ad while browsing here. That has got to be the most irritating thing I have ever seen. I don't even want to see their logo for the rest of my life!

I have firefox- my hubby got on and somehow fixed the problem. Hallelujah!!

They think we will really want to shop there after dealing with that? sheeeeeeeeeeesh!

GO FIREFOX. GO AD=BLOCK PLUS.

And, knock on wood, I have yet to see the Babies-R-Us ad. Thank goodness!!!

Hey, those irritating ads work even if you've never seen them. Recently someone was bitterly complaining about the 3 Musketeers MINT candy bar ad. I wasn't seeing the ad since I use FF and ABP. I'd never heard of them before but bought one the next time I was standing in line at WM...and the next time and the next time (g)
