Kashmir White granite for my white kitchen?

Hi all,

I am new to the board and would like to ask for your help! We have been going through MAJOR renovation these last month and a half; adding a living room, library, 2nd bathroom, laundry room, and remodeling our entire kitchen.

Given when we started, I am amazed at how quickly our GC has kept up with the timeline and projects. Things have gone more than smoothly and it's not stressful as I thought it would be.

This isn't to say we didn't have any hiccups with our cabinet installations. To say the least, the cabinet guys put 7 holes in my upper cabinets looking for a stud....Yup yup. They didn't find any, but left 7 huge holes. :(

Anyway. The problems are now fixed and we are happy. However, granite just got put in by the granite company and I'm so unsure about the color! Please tell me we made the right choice!

Our kitchen is a clean, stark white with breadboards. These were Diamond cabinets ordered through Direct Buy. The floors will be hand scraped hickory hardwood. The countertop we chose was Kashmir White granite. We went with this granite because we wanted a clean, fresh looking kitchen that would not date. To me, a white kitchen is classic.

The granite fabricator was amazing. He let us choose from 4 different slabs of granites trying to match the grains to make sure everything flows nicely in the kitchen (our countertops are in a U shape). Considering the length of each wall, we were amazed we didn't have any seams! He actually cut from 4 different pieces of granites to make sure everything looked perfect.

Our walls are 130 by 160 by 135. The middle wall is broken up by a slide in range. Basically, we got two L shape counters and a long 135 slab for the bar. Due to the light color of the granite, I can see the joint if I am looking for it. Here are a few photos...please let me know what you think. Sorry, it's still a work-in-progress, but at least it'll give you an idea.

I'd appreciate and opinion on the colors. I'm having major doubts here. :(

Check out the "Read Me" post about how to imbed photos. You need a Photobucket accout or something similar.

I'd love to see photos to judge! I'm getting white cabs also. Possibly from Diamond too, if I don't go custom instead.

We chose Kashmir White for our 2007 kitchen remodel (we've since moved). We had it with natural maple floors and cherry cabinets. We enjoyed it, but learned that it is definitely one of the more porous granites, which means that you'll get a temporary dark patch where it gets wet. The stains fade away after the slab gets a chance to dry, but it can take a day or two. This was particularly noticeable around the sink, which never really has a chance to dry out. After we purchased ours I did some online research and learned that that some granite professionals consider KW too porous for kitchen use at all (!) and that others say that if you're going to use it, you need to seal it with a product designed for porous stone (like limestone). We used "511 Porous Plus" from Miracle Sealants, which made a big difference. Here is a link that might be useful: 511 Porous Plus from Miracle Sealants

I have been living with my kashmir white counters for about 7 months now. We did seal them using a sealer I think dh bough from Home depot. I can't remember the name of it but we are not really happy with the result. When the counters get wet the granite darkens but once they dry the water stain goes away. We have been meaning to buy the porous plus 511 sealer hoping it solves this issue. Now while I am pretty careful in wiping up stains immediately dh is not. So he will leave coffee drips, tomato sauce splashes, etc on the counters sometimes all day and they always wipe up, with no stains, (so far). Like mydreamhome mentioned all the light granites can stain, but I think if you invest in a good sealer you should be ok.

Doesn't your inspiration kitchen have Calcutta gold marble, not Carrara? I think the text talked about specifically wanting the warm gold tones in the Calcutta Gold..... to that end, I'm not sure Kashmir White is what you would want. I had it in my last kitchen (honed) and considered it seriously for this new one. It is definitely more on the cold side, although some slabs tend more towards a greeny-grey and some do have a touch more warmth if they have more of the cream swaths. Some slabs, also, have more movement, with large, milky-way-like waves through them.... so if that's important to you i would definitely go pick out your slab. As far as dirt and upkeep on the honed Kashmir White, ours was a breeze. I sealed it like once a year (way less than recommended) and because of the patterning, nothing ever showed. We set oily, stain-y things on it all the time to no ill effect. I don't know what Ivory Brown looks like, so I can't comment on that. FWIW, I was after the greyer look of Carrara, myself, in the new kitchen, and I thought I would use Kashmir White. But then I decided to use what I really wanted: Carrara! (It is actually less expensive) I'll double check but I dont think its carrara in your inspiration kitchen---

I think it looks beautiful! I love the clean look you have going. You have one of my goals for a kitchen - a gorgeous neutral space that can go in any direction you like. I would love to decorate that kitchen. :)

serawyn - I'm not able to see your photos - anyone else have that problem?
Have you had any problems with staining on your Kashmir countertops? I'm considering Kashmir White but am concerned with the care. Thanks!

I think the granite color will be elegant. The flow of the granite near the sink looks very well planned. Your floors sound beautiful. Have you considered a stronger color for the walls? Hmbk, you could try right clicking on the little icons above and opening the image in a new tab. That worked for me!

Serawyn, Kashmir white is a very attractive, porous stone. DonÃ¢ÂÂt be afraid to seal it every few months for the first year (or so). For this application water based sealers will perform better than solvent based sealers. Also, stay away from cleaners with coconut oil like Ã¢ÂÂ409Ã¢ÂÂ they will most likely darken the stone over time.

Serawyn, here is one of your photos and one from my kitchen, I love my kashmir white ,have it in my kitchen counters as on 3 bathroom floors ,big foyer and kitchen/family room combo floors , love it and would do it in a heartbeat again. I agree with Caayu , sealer is very important, have had mine for 2 years and we had the fabricator seal the counters with their sealer and have had no staining what so ever. But I have heard if you get a stain you just have to be patent cause all staining will fade after a wile .

My wonderful DH dropped a hole red wine bottle on the floor in the kitchen last week, I cleaned the floor with water and there is no stain.
