Are you a black and white person? Meaning you don't want color of any kind in the kitchen? If I were to have black granite: I would use Black Galaxy granite. Only my opinion: there is gold fleck in the granite to give some PoP. Black granite is great in the sense you only have to seal maybe every 3-5 years, plus the stone is almost stain proof! If you go with black granite: you would be able to do whatever you want on the backsplash as well. Glass tiles! Or glossy subway tiles on a running bond pattern. Only my suggestion.

I am a black and white person. I'll bring in color in other ways and want the parts that I can't change out to be basic in color. For black granite, we are thinking cambrian black (either antiqued/brushed or polished). It has flecks of silver.

I have a similar kitchen, white cabs/black honed granite on perimeters. On my island I have white instead with black cabs. I could have easily had black on black for my island, I think it looks smashing. If I didn't love carrera so much thats the way I would have gone.
My other thought... in a small kitchen it could very well be a better choice as it won't look so busy.

Have you figured out how to fit an island? Maybe it's because we've looked at your cabinets all in white so much, it seems like the black would make it look smaller in your particular space...although I love the tone on tone look.

The problem with black on black is that neither then stands out. It all blends together. I think you need a bit of contrast. Black counters on white perimeter cabinets and white counters on black island.

I am hoping that the black on black will make the island seem smaller rather than stick out. I was also thinking the black on black would look more like furniture and less like cabinetry.

Rhome - we moved the door way over so that it is now in line with the door out to the laundry room. It allows for an island that is 32" wide by 60" long. We still have pretty good aisles, although probably slightly less than recommended. Around 40" by the oven and fridge, a little less on the sink side and 14" curved overhang. We will have one seat on the end of the island. I still haven't totally decided whether to make the cabinet underneath 48" long or 42" long. (It will be 18" deep) If we do 42" on the cabinet, we could squeeze a stool on the opposite side. The island is not being made for about a week or mo, so I'm still debating that one. I really think for my personality type (a little claustrophobic and really afraid of cleaning a banquette bench and cushion each night after dinner with a messy son), the island is a better choice. I'm sure the banquette would have been cozy, but I think this will give us a different type of seating in the kitchen than we have in our dining room, which is right next door.

I bet it'll be great. I do prefer the black-on-black look to the extreme black and white contrast continuing throughout. A wood top on the black could also look nice and add warmth since you'll no longer have the table.
