Price of Copper Hood Outrageous?!?

It seems every time I receive a bid it is 50%+ higher than I expect. I think my expectations are based somewhat on an educated guess. My latest quote was for a copper hood. I was floored when my GC said around $6,000.00. It measures 24D by 42W. Anyone out there familiar with what a hood would cost with those dimensions? The design is rather straight forward. It is shaped with a convex curve. Also, I already have a vent-a-hood liner.

Your GC is correct. I priced those for months and kept coming up way too high. The really plain ones in a 36 inch are around $5000 and the curvier ones with more detail went to $7500. So I assume the 42 inch would be around $6000. I ended up getting limestone for half the price.

Allison0704 on the Finished Kitchens Blog had a beautiful one made by her GC (I think) with a wood molding bottom and copper sheeting for cheaper. Maybe she will chime in. Here is the link.

I was also doing a little research, and found the pricing to be way outta my budget

Allison chimed in and showed pictures of her hand-made work-of-art. She was lucky to have a GC who is good, as well as handy.

And she DOES have one of the most gorgeous kitchens. One of my fav too, Cleo. ;o)

Modern-Aire will custom build a hood liner to your exact specs--size, depth, location of ductwork, type of blower (internal vs external--although the shallow height of your hood would likely be better accommodated with an external blower), lighting choice etc. You should end up with a SS liner with the preferred baffle filters, which would drop into your unit like a glove. And at a price that's surprisingly close to off the shelf units. And with superb hand craftsmanship, made in America. I post this repetitively, I know, but I love my MA hood just as much 5 years after installation as I did when we installed it. One of the best things in my kitchen.

I used sheeting for a backsplash area in the kitchen and in the laundry room. Also the ceiling in our powder room. The sheets on the chimney were cut/crimped/etc in the shop before applied - needed to be heavier. As far as the hood goes, we used our HVAC company we have used for our commercial properties for the last 20+ years. He did not charge me for our hood. He also did the tops of our arches dormers. He put the precut panels on the hood (came out to measure the week before) and did not use glue. Only tiny copper nails and not that many. Nails are covered on front edges with a piece he folded back on both sides. We used Liquid Nails for the backsplash sheeting and a few screws (that are hidden by upper and lower cabinets. One thing about copper, even the gauge we used, is it does bend or dent easily. The thinner it is, the easier is it to bend or dent. Would love to see your shower when you're done. I thought about using whole sheets to line our shower, but nixed the idea. Saw several DIY online. They look pretty cool.

I learned a lot by taking a magnifying glass to my kitchen cabinet quote and understanding all the up-charges. Can you get a detailed quote on the components of the island? Then you can work with the KD to tweak the design to save money. I have no idea what the Omegas run, but here's a ballpark of how my Kraftmaids ran: Base 24" cabinets: $500 each (VERY ballpark; obviously depends on width, door style, drawers vs. doors, etc.) Panels (doors) around the outside: $100 each Turned legs: $100-200 for just the short, stubby ones, $500-600 for counter-height ones. (Go figure: a leg costs as much as a cabinet!) Reduced OR increased depth: $100 per cabinet. (Yes, you pay more for less cabinet.) KM also has a 10% upcharge for all plywood and another 10% for glaze finishes, both of which we did. So if you had 2 drawer banks with extra depth, 7 "door" pieces around the other 3 sides, and 4 stub feet, with the plywood and finish upcharges, that would be $2600. Your quote thus looks a bit on the high side to me. My theory is that cabinet companies charge a bundle on the extra, frou-frou stuff, not because they cost more to make, but because people designing them into their kitchens tend to be less price-sensitive than the general population and they can get away with it. Definitely shop around, because since you're doing a different color, you can get away with different manufacturer.

I get that you want fancy without the fancy price. I'm a frugal person, myself. However, it seems though that you're expecting others to do all the research for you. That's bad form and as a result, you are getting less than hospitable responses. Do some of the research yourself and post here for opinions instead of expecting Houzers to do it all for you. That said, I have an induction cooktop with a 600cfm XO insert that I bought for about $300 and built the surround myself. It sounds like a jet engine when on the highest setting (a duct issue), and it doesn't look anything like your $5K+ inspiration hoods. Far from it, but I derive great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction by making things myself. JSYK, there is no residential code that requires ventilation, despite what alot of pros here will say. Get a hood if you want to exhaust steam and odors.

Get thee to ebay...

Copper hoods are seen as such 'luxury' items that local craftsmen mark them way, way up. In the internet era, if you look on the web nothing is a 'niche' item, and price competition sets in.

Here's a 36 with a buy-it-now of $1649:

Still not cheap, but much better...

I dont think I could do any home remodel without ebay. You dont get the customization but you get excellent prices there. Plus the selection on ebay is incredible!

Thanks guys. I did some research on the internet and found a Texas company with beautiful designs and finishes and was quoted 4,000(incl shipping) but a 6-8wk lead time.

I know Allison's hood and I will show it to my GC. Perhaps copper sheeting over wood would save a lot!

I searched the internet too and couldn't justify spending a small fortune on a hood. I was lucky to have two wonderful craftsman installing the kitchen who built mine around a VAH liner. They even made the trim in their shop out of old pine which ties in nicely with the cabinetry. The guys have since gone into business for themselves and are currently making several things for me.

Here is a shutterfly link showing the hood as it was being made. The photographs do not show the front plywood piece that was put on before the copper was installed. My HVAC guy measured, cut and installed the copper for me. Not the kitchen guys. But it can be purchased and cut locally from a metal shop.
