Help - need to filter the cold tap water under the sink..

I would like to install an under the sink filter in my new kitchen, but would like all of the water through the cold tap to be filtered. I wouldn't mind to do a drinking water filter, but I don't want to install the extra dispensing tap on the counter - don't like the look.

Anyway, everything I've seen is either a drinking water filter (with tap that mounts on counter) or a whole house filter - don't want to get into that...

Am I looking at the wrong products?

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Basically, to get a high enough flow rate, you'll need a "whole house" filter under your tap. If you use standard size housings, you can use generic filters with them and it doesn't cost that much more.

Look at the "Big Blue" filter housings; the 10" ones will easily fit under most sinks and the 10" BB filters have enough flow to work on the cold tap. You're going to want more than one housing; if you post your water quality results you can get more specific suggestions. But at a minimum you're going to be looking at a sediment prefilter and then a carbon (GAC or block) filter.

I've been using a Culligan US-EZ-4 EZ-Change Level-4 Under-Sink Drinking Water System ($70 from Amazon). The included faucet is complete crap, but I bought it with the Amazon recommended "Designer Water Filter Faucet Brushed Nickel" for another $50. This combo has served me very well for the past eighteen months. Replacement filters cost $35 and need to be changed every six months. Though my municipal waters tastes okay, I can definitely tell a difference. More than anything I bought into Culligan's literature and hype of a "Level 4" water filter. It gives me peace of mind. Though I don't have it hooked up to an Ice Maker (we're using trays) I can't think of a reason why you couldn't. Good luck

With the first one I wanted a faucet to match my sink faucet so I bought one. The second time I just used the faucet that comes with each unit -- ok but not as attractive. However, my current filter is on the mudroom sink so I wasn't as concerned with the look. It takes some study to figure out which filter is needed. I got the one with the UV light for our apartment with old pipes and city water. The replacement filter set up was quite expensive but that water was so clean I used it in the humidifier and didn't need to do anything. Now we have the 2-stage without the UV. We have our own well water so I didn't feel the need for the extra filtration. Units are small and easy to install. My brother got one with a 10% coupon (they sometimes have sales around holidays) and he installed it himself. I've been really happy with both of ours.

The specs indicate that the 600A will work fine when installed in series in the cold water supply to the cold faucet. You'll need to get the proper hardware to make the connections. If you're smart you'll allow for a graceful retreat back to the way the plumbing was if your don't like the filter or it fails or needs service. Is there a particular aspect of your water quality you don't like because these filters will only do so much.

Believe you're talking about two issues 1) scale/deposition and 2) taste. Scale/deposition can be handled via water softening. Taste can be handled via filtering -- typically via activated charcoal stack. Taste is a very individual thing. How far you should go is up to you. In my case, local city water is 7-10 grains hard; about 200ppm TDS; and tastes distinctly alkaline, which is a region-wide characteristic. It leaves scale on heating elements and bad tastes in coffee, tea, rice, pasta,.... just about everything. I have a softener delivering zero grains to everything. Also have RO unit with sink spigot delivering water at 2ppm TDS which is also piped to the ref. ice-maker. Anything consumable in my household that is prepared using water gets it from the RO spigot. Many people do not like the taste of soft water or RO water and have their personal favorites among the bottled waters. In any event, you should start out by knowing what's in your water now. Have you had it tested? Interestingly, although you talked about filtration and all your various concerns, you said nothing at all about whether or not your water tastes good/bad/neutral. Nor did you say whether or not you've had trouble with it previously.

We have a "whole house" filter on the cold water line that runs to the kitchen (from our utility room, which is where the filter is located). It filters the cold water at the faucet, the water line to the fridge, and the pot filler faucet. It also filters the water going to the newly installed faucet outside, right over the deck under the kitchen window, but this was not by design--that faucet taps into the cold water line under the kitchen sink. Theoretically we could use that filter for all the cold water (that's what it's meant for), but we don't.

The filter is by CUNO--AquaPure (the filter housing we have utilizes the APS117 and AP117 filter cartridges--the "S" cartridge removes lime scale and we put that one in when we replaced the original cartridge last month). If you go to the CUNO and AP distributor websites, you can find various filter options. I know when I called CUNO to ask about the two diff cartridges the woman in cust/tech support seemed surprised that we had a whole house filter, but that's what our plumber installs. I'll bet they can help you find the right filter for your needs.

FWIW, we don't have a separate tap/faucet for drinking water. We tend to get our drinking water from the fridge dispenser which is double filtered anyway (once by the house filter and then again by the one in the fridge grille).

Try going to the camping/RV section at Walmart and looking at the filters that they have for RV'ers to use from the waterhook up to the RV inlet -- they "insert" into the garden-hose type hose that supplies the water -- so should be able to be inserted on your cold water line.

Would these (link below) perhaps suit your needs?

I considered doing this, but the faucet I saw IRL only came with a deck plate, and I really want to go plateless since I have an undermount sink.

However, FWIW. I think another manufacturer does a series of these too, but I can't remember who it was now. I saw them at either HD or Lowes, which narrows it down a litle bit!
