What do you wish you started or wished you didn't?
Comments (3)I haven't started much yet. I have a bunch of geraniums. Most started from cuttings, but some started from seed. They take a long time to mature from seed. I have some begonias that I saved the tubers from last year. They are just starting to leaf. My Impatiens I intend to start tomorrow. I grow tempo Impatiens. They put on a great show and are the earliest to flower. I prefer them to the doubles. Anything else will be started in the greenhouse next month. I plan out my beds in a half hearted way when I'm contemplating my flower choices. I keep a book with genuses and their varieties that I have ordered and make notes in it about them during the summer. Over the years I have discovered which plants like which conditions in my yard. I mainly order the ones that have performed well in the past but I'm always open to new ones and include some of them in my order. Some of these I would grow again--others not. I always say I'm going to cut back but I always grow too much. I have a neighbor who is a gardener and we swap plants. I usually grow Petunias. For grandiflora I like the Storm variety; The blossoms don't droop in the rain. I grow the Grandiflora glorious mix double petunias amd the milliflora Picobella. The last are small plants with small petunia flowers that work very well for edging a bed. I don't grow the trailing petunias because I don't have many hanging planters or a place to put them....See Morewhat you regret you didn't include in contract/or happy you did?
Comments (3)It is important to carefully read the instructions included with the AIA A105 agreement form. For instance, the instructions explain that to shorten the document dispute resolution by arbitration was omitted and should be added if it is desired. A105 is similar to many other AIA agreements but it is not at all standard in the construction industry. The differences are too many to mention here but for instance: -What is commonly called a "warranty" is different in an AIA contract. Under Article 14 the contractor's obligation to correct defective work continues for 1 year after completion. -In a contractor written house building contract there is rarely any mention of the owner's right to carry out the work nor is termination of the contract. - A105 provides for an architect to oversee the project. Will you have one or will you strike all references to an architect in the agreement form? The detail you mentioned would usually be in the design drawings rather than in the technical specifications simply because it would be a better indication of where the material is located and would be more likely to be noticed by the contractor. It is sometimes a good idea to include full sized sections of all trim and molding with notes about where they should be used. If you are not familiar with construction contracts you should ask an architect or a lawyer to assist you....See MoreWhat Fad did you fall for, and now wish you didn't?
Comments (46)I've never had the $ to go with fads or trends, really, but 3.5 years ago when we bought our couches, the store we went to had a million fabric options and not a single one in the color I really wanted for my couches--I wanted a dark emerald and all they had was sage and hunter in the green category; the other 199,998 options were gold, red or brown. So I went with brown--even though my other upholstered (actually slipcovered) seating in that room was already brown. And that is why I am trapped in brown hell today. I understand that with kids and pets and shoddy housekeeping, brown is serviceable. I know that accessorized with things other than dog hair, dropped Crocs and a handful of Connect Four pieces, brown can be elegant and rich looking. But in my house, it's just plain brown. Snooze. I wish I had bucked the trend (what was that color trend that made all the fabrics red and gold? Tuscan?) and held out for the emerald sofas of my dreams.......See MoreDid you ever enjoy a book you didn't think you would like?
Comments (27)Larry, I have to agree with you about The Far Pavillions. My sister in law kept telling me how wonderful it was and how much I would like it. I'd take it out of the library, look at it and end up taking it back, unread, a few weeks later. She even gave me a paperback copy for my birthday (she was persistant) that sat on my bookshelf for months. Finally, one day I picked it up and started reading it. I couldn't put it down. I read all but the last 3 or 4 chapters in one sitting. I'd have finished it that night except I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer....See Morekitchendetective
