Schluter Edge Instead of 4 inch Granite Backsplash
Comments (8)I always use color matched grout caulk at the interface between my backsplash and counters. Grout gets gunky and cracks down there. I grout and then I dig out all the grout that is in the area between my tile and my counters while the grout is wet, then I caulk the next day. The Tile Shop did not have the grout caulk that matched my grout on my last backsplash but I was able to find it and order it online. It is never a perfect match (one is a cement product and one is a adhesive product so it is hard to get the colors perfect) but it is pretty close and looks good. Occasionally I will choose my grout caulk in a color that either matches the tile or counter top material instead of the grout. You would still need to add something to your Schluter edge (clear silicone most likely) because you need to create a waterproof seal to stop water/liquids from wicking from the countertop behind your tile to your drywall and down to your cabinetry....See MoreIs Schluter Kerdi & Shower Systems a No Brainer?
Comments (26)So many issues for a shower. It's really helpful to hear the thinking through others have done. I am revising my plans and spotted the Schulter 21" niche, which is a good size. Two tier. Partition wall is 29" wide. It's prefab so the draining angle should be built in. We don't use pumps as the nozzles dry out and they annoy me. But we both have different products so I agree -- the bigger the better. I also felt teak bench would work and not be fixed. Also not cold, slippery or uncomfortable when wet. I have some Turkish hammam towels which are not terry and really work well to throw over a bench if needed. Warmly Yours also can be used to heat a bench, however. Trying to keep this shower basic and adaptable. The niche placement idea is a big help although it would be on the left vs right and slightly behind. The footrest bar is terrific. Thank you @Avanti! Also needing to figure placement of grab bars. Will post photos of the elevations when I finish....See MoreSchluter Ditra Heat System Experience / Thoughts
Comments (6)I don't have Ditra Heat, but I have DIY, gutted and remodeled three bathrooms in my home. All have heated floors. Two of them use a mats from Warmly Yours, the other uses Warm Wire. It's all just heating cable - as an Engineer, I think any reputable product should be OK. The Ditra combines crack isolation membrane with a guides for the heating cable. They all use 'line voltage' thermostats. The thermostats have mechanical relays. Some of the relays are a little louder than others when they energize/deenergize. You don't have to buy a "Ditra" thermostat. You can buy any line voltage thermostat. I used Honneywell, which appears under the name Aube. Amazon - line voltage thermostats With GFCI There are more expensive similar models that have a GFCI built in - that's what I used. The max floor temp is 84 degrees. I install two floor sensors - one for a spare. I pour SLC over the entire installation. I have heard you can use the same 20 amp circuit as the bathroom. You will need a large deep box - I use a tile ring....See MoreDoes this Schluter system look right?
Comments (10)Since they didn't finish the Schluter installation, its definitely not right and it will not seal. However, based on what I can see in the picture it can probably be fixed by a qualified installer. This appears to be Kerdit membrane, and every seam or penetration must be sealed with Kerdi band and thinset. All joints must have a 2 inch overlap. There are also specific Kerdi band products for inside corners and long flat runs, so you will get a better seal. This is one example of the videos that show the proper installation. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+install+kerdi+band&oq=how+to+install+kerdi+band&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l2.5983j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#kpvalbx=_p6EZX6etEOWwytMPu9m16Ao60 Bruce...See MoreAshe42
