What color paint with my calacatta counters??

We are going to install honed calacatta gold marble countertops in our new kitchen which opens onto a sunroom. I am struggling with a white paint for the perimeter cabinets.

Island cabs will be BM roosevelt taupe (a dark taupe) & all the wooden trim in sunroom (basically an all wood room with wraparound windows - porch-like) will be a lighter taupe - F&B fawn. Floors throughout are dark stained HW.

Now I am working on a white or creamy white for the perimeter cabs.

If you have calacatta gold & white cabinets, what white did you paint them? True white? Will a creamy white look ok, since the stone is pretty white? TIA for advice!

I'm not sure if I have any good paint color recommendations. I know that a lot of people LOVE Benjamin Moore Dove White. It's a slightly creamy white and I'm positive it would look divine with calacatta. I have calacatta on my island and my cabs are a creamy white. I love it but I wouldn't recommend my paint color as it has pink undertones which are now undetectable thanks to my green wall color! My walls will be green forever.....
Anyway, I think a slight creamy white is actually a bit better with calacatta than a true stark white, I like what it does for both the tan and gray veins, here are some pics of creamy white with calacatta:

Second on White Dove - it is a very flexible white that can look barely creamy or create great contrast depending on what is is against (I used it for all the trim in my house.) BM Dove Wing is also an interesting color (if not a confusing name considering the other name :) I used it on some of my cabinets - it has slight gray undertone almost greenish (not green) vibe that looks really good with my gray counters and white quartzite island counter.

If you want a lighter taupe - BM historic colors - Revere Pewter is really lovely (I have it on my kitchen walls.) Good luck. Also, I have had very good feedback on the paint forum, I would cross post this.

I would: 1. paint the stained window trim white to match the res of the window. 2. Find a top treatment or make one in which the main accent color of the fabric is the tomato red color... trying to find a fabric with the other colors that are in your prints (really cool-- like the prints). I see a fabric with the background color being a lighter tone than the mats on your print (same color- just lighter); with the sage green in the word "tortellini" in your prints; the buttery-white color of the onions; the tomato red, and other colors found in the print would work also (as long as you pick-up on those colors). 3. I would put the flour canisters away since they really don't go with anything in your kitchen and add some tomato red accents on your counter. 4. I would paint the walls an off-white with a lot of yellow tone to it. Or maybe take your "tortellini" print in to paint store, have them color match the mat, and then add the colorant at about 25% of that formula to avoid a matchy look, yet still have it coordinate.

But a lot of people have asked about undertones for various grays and whites. The only way I know to answer such questions is to evaluate the color. If you know of another way to evaluate color undertones please tell me. Undertones are subjective not objective. Ask three people about a color's undertone and you'll very likely get three different answers. Which means it is impossible to objectively and consistently evaluate color from an undertones perspective. Many have been led to believe that they should know about undertones or are supposed to train their eye to see undertones. Yet no one has a tangible explanation for undertones, or where they come from, or how they are consistently applicable and useful from person to person, color to color, context to context. It's the Emperor's New Clothes. The one and only correct way to assess and compare color is by the psychophysical dimensions of color: hue, value, chroma. And LRV which is luminance. Every color, including whites and grays, belongs to a hue family. Hue family is derived directly from a color's spectral data. Think of spectral data like it's color DNA. You get spectral data by measuring a color with an instrument like a spectrophotometer or a colorimeter. The science of color measurement is called colorimetry. One of the things the instruments capture is wavelength. The dominant wavelength determines a color's hue family. That's where hue family comes from and you can measure the color with three different instruments and get the same hue family answer every time - colorimetry is objective, consistent, and repeatable. I worry that b/c of everything else going on between the two rooms it will be busy. They're not overly big expanses, really, especially being split as they are between the two spaces...and I really do like it. Part of it, I think, is b/c I've always disliked swirly counters, so I'm confused why I like this, so then I second guess myself. At some point the cabinets will all be the same color..but we'll have the brown of the floor, the brown of the trim around the inside of the doorways/windows, white trim around doorways/windows/floor, light blue cabinets, plus my husband wants to build a very large table for the dining area, and he wants to build it, I believe, out of like butcher block and cedar. I can't remember exactly, but it seems like..over the top. I think I need to find out exactly what he plans to do w/the table. I worry the whole thing altogether will be a LOT and I'll need to tone things down w/a lot of white to balance it out. Not sure if that makes sense. What I dislike about the laminate is the exact opposite thing everyone warned me about w/the white--I detest putting something on the counter and hearing the crunch of crumbs. Or putting my hand on it and feeling crumbs. Seeing spills. The things that "blend in" so I set things down and didn't see the water or whatever and now my papers are wet. I'd thought maybe if it were white there would be no excuses. (tho in reality it's probably wishful thinking) The laminate we got from a countertop place that I believe only does laminate, We installed it, and it was pretty inexpensive. I'm not sure what it costs elsewhere, but 11' was less than $300, so I don't think that was too bad. If I did something different, I wouldn't feel horrible about replacing it, but I wouldn't do it right away.

IMO you can wait for backsplash for a very long time and I honestly would not choose white I woudld choose a gray from the counters in a large format glass subway tile and I never like mixing real stone with fake it does not do either material a favor. The other option would be a large backspals in the same material as the counter.

In my last kitchen, I had Calacatta and used Dove White. However, this kitchen, where I've got Statuario going in, I've decided to go with Chantilly Lace - I felt that at times during the winter in low light, my Dove White "greyed" out a bit - the Chantilly Lace is a truer white and little warmer (to me) without going to the yellow side.

Thanks for the feedback! Rookie those are some GORGEOUS images. Actually I have a couple of those in my inspiration file.

So glad to hear the input on BM white dove. Actually all the trim in my current & past house is/was painted white dove and my cabinet door sample is white dove. I don't have a calacatta sample to hold up with it right now, so that's why I'm seeking input. Just don't want the white to be too bright.

mnhockeymom, I'm going to try some chantilly lace now also. Hopefully I can get a calacatta sample tomorrow & compare the 2.

Sparklekitty, thanks for the recommendation of Revere Pewter - the roosevelt taupe is so dark it's starting to scare me :)
