Show me the red and green...

Hey Folks,

I thought I had this backsplash thing all figured out. I posted a while back with a sample of a subway/glass mix that I was going to use. Most folks liked it, a few, respectfully had some reservations. I appreciated all the input. I have, however, hit a snag. I had put it together thinking it would go with my counters because my counters were black and black is a neutral and everything goes with black. Then, the other day I thought to lay it out and look at it with the countertop and ewwwwww. I hated it together. There were some brown and pink tones and then a dark rhubarby color. The brown and pink just weren't cutting it with the black counter. So, back to the drawing board.

We have a house with a lot of bold colors. Our bedroom is upstairs and it's painted a dark, red. The stairs come down into the kitchen and the tread faces are painted this same red so I was wanting to incorporate some red, probably in my fridge surround. I have a deep navy blue dining room on the other side of the kitchen. The living room is the color of a bit of honey candy bar. Each room is a different color with a creamy wainscoting and trim to unify all.

Long story short, I'd love to do ocher and red or sage and red and wondered if anyone had any lovely examples of kitchens that work with these types of combos. Might even consider a mushroom and red option.

I have ordered some new backsplash tile samples which are coming in daily. I am currently looking at white subways with a horizontal band of maybe this....

It has the same brown and pink bits in the stone but with the dark gray glass tiles it actually work with the black in the countertop.

Perhaps you might repost this with the word "backsplash" in the title?

Question:"Threedodsmom (waht a cute name!), what is the yellow flower in your fist picture? And I love the lush look in your second picture. I see some dark red in there. What are they?" Answer: standard button garden mum planted last fall, blooming now in July. A happy coincidence ! Dark red touches are Jacob Cline monarda, knockout rose new growth showing, and canna "Wyoming" leaves. Second Question: "Threedogsmom, I have those exact daylilies that are in your first picture - rust with bright yellow - a gift with no name tag. I always wondered but assumed they are just a variety of Ditch Lily. Is that right, or do you have some other name for them?" Answer: They are not the common ditch lilies - you can see a ditch lily in my second pic down, to the right, a tall scape towards the front/right of the bed. You can see more pics in the "poised for lily explosion" thread I started. I do not remember the name of the burgundy and yellow daylilies in the first pic, but they have multiplied very well in just 2 years ! Got at Lowe's.

Nomad, thanks for your support! What are your tiles like? What are you leaning toward for grout? re: Antique White - that is also one of the colors in the Custom Grout Solutions polyblends sample set we have. So there must be a few brands with that same name. Here's ours, still not quite done but you get the idea. Funny after all the agonizing, I don't remember the name of the brand. The color is Silverado. I can find out the brand if you like. It might be a touch darker than we wanted, but it's probably not fully dry yet. Either way, I'm not going to second guess it now! Love Paris Rain... my kitchen/family room is Cheyenne Green, and I often wish I had gone one step lighter and used Paris Rain. This is the only pic I have of Cheyenne Green (the wall in the foreground). This is from our beach cottage -- DD's room in Pale Vista. This is Dacquiri Ice also in our beach house.

every plant.. has its season or 2 of glory .. in my MI ... with my 5 odd cultivars ... there is the glory of flowering ... and then the winter show of hanging fermenting fruit.. followed by birds flying into my windows.. lol .. most are just down right ugly in summer.. and who cares.. as far as i am concerned ... one reason i quit growing hobby fruit .. was that i was not willing to follow the spray regimen for such.. so i darn well am not going to do it for an ornamental tree ... z5 is half the US.. can you be a bit more specific... how about some pix of yours ... a 3 inch caliper tree.. had 99% of its root mass cut off when dug for sale ... it can take 3 to 5 years to recover and regrow the roots .... this is one reason.. had you asked.. we would have recommended a smaller tree .. which would most likely outgrown the huge transplant ... but that hindsight ... anyway.. we live in tree time.. when dealing with such .... not our instant gratification world ... your trees are not dead .. so all you are left with is tree time ... finally.. a crab is a crab ... i dont know why you insist on info specific to the ones you have ... a tree is a tree ... i dont think your problems are specific to the cultivar ... do understand.. that 'resistance' to common problems .. does not mean it wont happen .. it just means one is a bit better at avoiding such ... ken

I think that since you have strong colors throughout and are picking a strong statement type bs, you might want to keep the bold colors for your accessories such as canisters, towels, window treatments, etc... I'd go with a more neutral like a light mushroom for the paint.
btw - I think I saw a mosaic exactly like that at HD...

Is your taste traditional or more modern? I love the same rich tones as you- life is too short to have a neutral kitchen! If you like traditional... here is a red and mushroom kitchen that I saw at a kitchen showcase and loved.

I didn't see your previous thread, so I would love to see what you decided against. I also hope to do reds and ochres in a glass backsplash with black counters. Here are some I found, but have also been worried about too much brown:

The kitchen in the top right hand picture in this page is one of my favorite inspiration pictures-I love the red backsplash and black counters. Actually, I love everything about this kitchen.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate them. I got some samples today and I'm still trying to work out a tile/paint combination that'll work. I'll try to post some pics if I work something out. I appreciate all the assistance and hope to get even more in the next few days.

I have a red and green thing going in my kitchen. The red is the brick floor and my cabinets are sage green. As I was planning I was thinking the brick would be a neutral, which I guess it kind of is. But when we picked a color for the pantry on the other side of the room, we wanted it to blend with the floor, rather than add another color to the room. So the pantry is "Mayflower Red".
