Disposal air switch won't fit hole
Comments (10)Hi, I drilled my own holes for my air switch in my soapstone. The carborundum-encrusted drill bit did a good job, and the standard-issue insinkerator switch dropped right in. I wonder if the original installer used a metric (30mm) bit which squeeked by with the old switch., It's not difficult to enlarge a hole. I would make a template (with the new hole size drilled into it) from a scrap of plywood, and hot-glue it down to the C-top over the existing hole. Then introduce the proper sized bit to the the soapstone. When you have 1/4" of the hole drilled you could snap off the template and finish drilling, but you could as well leave it until you're done. Use a slow-speed drill, and water is not needed, but you can use it to keep down dust. Probably easier to wet it with the template off. Lowe's sells a nice cheap 1 1/4" carborundum bit. Comments (3)I think what you're looking for is a fiber optic switch. I believe they stay on for 20 seconds and then turn off. There are some issues with installing this switch vs. an air switch due to the small size of the hole required. Comments (4)@Lisa Cain. Thank you so much for your quick response! I think I am going to go with the raised button. I have the recessed button in my basement bar and it doesn't get a lot of use, but the one on the kitchen counter will get tons of abuse with my family. Do you know if yours is the WestBrass brand? My kitchen remodel is nearing completion and this is one of the last things I need to decide! I am looking forward to the day when everything is installed and all the decision-making ends....See MoreAir switch for garbage disposal under sink?
Comments (17)Definitely on the counter. My sister has one under the sink where you have to open the cabinet door to use it, which is a big PITA because you have to step back, open the cabinet door, press the air switch, wait until you are done with the disposal, press the switch, then close the cabinet. The only thing I would add about installing the air switch in the counter is that you want it to be installed at the end of the line, near the corner. Some people put the air switch right next to the faucet which you shouldn’t do. You don’t want it too near the faucet handle. Because you don’t want drippy hands at the faucet handle constantly dripping onto the air switch. Here is how it should be placed:...See Moresjblick
