Bungalow Oak Park, Raised 5-panel doors, closet doors? wainscotin
Comments (2)I'm a fellow bungalow owner in Oak Park (N. Lombard), but ours is brick! We restored features in our home to also match what we think was original and we found doors at Jan's Antiques on N. Racine in Chicago. Have you checked there? Jan's prices are reasonable. All our closet doors match the other doors in our home. Also, and this will sound crazy, check with other bungalow owners on your block...many of the homes on 1 block were built by the same builder and have the same interior features. A few of our neighbors, because of their own projects, had extra doors standing in their basements. We retrieved crown molding from one of our neighbors. We have wainscoting in our dining room and it's the shaker style flat panel that you mention. Our doors have 2 recessed panels (small on top and large on bottom) and the paneling looks great. Our dining room, with all original woodwork and built-ins is the reason we purchased our home. What absolutely works in our dining room is that all the wainscoting, doors, baseboard and window trim is stained the same color. I think wainscoting and your doors will be just fine! Good luck with the projects you are undertaking!...See MoreFlat panel cabinet doors? Show me!
Comments (37)I finally have a couple pics of my flat panel door. Wish I had all of the doors, but alas... Anyway, in the pics, the minimal pattern does get a little lost in the walnut, but I would imagine if you did the same pattern in a lighter door it would stand out, even in photos. aimskitchen, you may also want to consider that there are two types of flat panel doors. The first truly is flat, and is usually made of mdf covered in veneers. I was actually quite surprised to see even high end cabinet lines using this kind. The other kind of flat panel, only appears to be a flat panel from the front. I believe it is actually called a recessed panel because it's sort of like a raised panel that has been flipped around. You can tell this kind because the back of the door will look something like this: Hopefully you can see in the photo that the panel is raised in the back. If you get a recessed panel you will have the look of a flat panel, but it will be solid wood and much thicker than a veneer flat panel....See MoreRepairing cracked panels in raised panel doors
Comments (7)They are cracking because they have been painted in. Frame and panel construction works by allowing wood movement in the panel, if you glue the panel down (with paint in this case) the panel can't expand and contract with seasonal changes in humidity and then cracks instead. Unless you free the panel it will continue to crack with seasonal movement. If you want to replace them probably the easiest way is to cut away the part of the frame holding the panel in, then replacing it with a molding when replacing the panel. I'd do that by making a template and using a pattern routing bit to cut away the old wood. That said, it would be a lot of work to fix a minor defect. An alternative would be to free the panel so it can move again (thin paint scraper around the edges), glue the panel back together and use something like bondo to smooth it. Disassembling an old door is difficult. You can cut it apart and then reassemble using loose tenons, making up the lost width of the saw kerf somehow, but you'd really have to love the door to make that effort worthwhile. If it were my door I'd ignore it, it's part of old house charm and a reminder to always accommodate wood movement....See MoreBase and Molding style to go with 2 Panel Raised Doors
Comments (7)@Beverly Our floors are the original and in wonderful condition - the chosen stain color for the doors and trim is based off the floors and is slightly darker. I am not interested in painted doors and trim, my preference is stained. We still have the original corner built ins in our dining room and cabinets in our kitchen and I feel those are traditional. I choose the door panel because I found it to be simpler and we will have four of them in a very small "hallway" (2 bedrooms, bath and basement doors). I thought if the panel design was any busier, it might be chaotic in the small space. It's also possible that I have no idea what I am talking about! Is there a different direction you would recommend....See Moremarcia_m
