Is the splash going to be reinstalled? It isn't hard to remove or particularly messy, but the raw bottom of a splash will easily scratch the glossy deck finish. Careful.

Typically the splash is bonded to the sheetrock with silicone caulk dabs every 12" or so. It should also be caulked to the countertop although this caulk joint is usually very thin.

Best way to break it loose is to gently force a putty knife between the splash and sheetrock. Seams in the splash should be scored with a razor knife as thoroughly as possible before attempting removal. most splash can be removed this way without breakage. If the stone is a particularly fragile one it is quite possible you'll break some of the pieces.

the sheetrock will be gouged and have paper torn away.

Thanks so much!!! By break some of the pieces you mean of the backsplash, not the countertop, correct?

I removed mine, using the exact process oldryder described. I also used wide painters tape near the seam joining the two so I wouldn't scratch my countertop. I had a heavy moving blanket covering the counter.
Please be aware that you may have larger gaps between the counter and the wall. It seems they don't cut as closely to the wall when the are covering it with a thick backsplash. Mine were fine, but I did have to tile a side splash that I would have preferred not to because of one large gap.

I just took mine off yesterday! I didn't have all the tools and I was too impatient to wait for my husband lol I just used an old knife and a spatula ha ha it was super easy!
