Kitchen Shoe Moulding/Placement of Pulls

My carpenter wants to run the shoe around the toe kick of the cabinets ( which I concur) . I have wood toe kick that matches the cabinets. What seems odd to me is that he wants to run the shoe underneath the kitchenaid stainless dishwasher that has a black metal base. Is it ok to have a continuous run of wood? Doesn't seem normal in the event the new dishwasher might need repair down the road.

Can someone post photos of placement of handles on triple drawers with stiles. I have the Durasupreme Monterey Doors and Drawers. Sorry I don't have pictures to post. I am using RH ORB Hansen Pulls. Some of my triple drawers are 24" and 30" wide. I know some recommend placing 2 sets 4" pulls on the drawers while some recommend one 6" or 8" pull on center. Does anyone actually have two hands free to open drawers? Thanks for your comments!

You are correct that you do not want to run shoe mold in front of your DW in case you have to pull it out for work.

30" wide drawer is the size that youdecide to either go with 1 or 2 pulls, everything less than that I would use 1 and everything more than that 2...unless of course you have those extra wide pulls of 6 or 8", then you only need one.

All of our appliances are integrated so the shoe molding runs around everything. However, it isn't attached to the toe kick at the fridge, freezer or DW in case they have to be pulled out. It occasionally gets kicked and knocked out of position, but I just push it back where it belongs with my foot. Hasn't been a problem after 2-3 years.

I would definitely put the appliance pulls on the DW and fridge drawers. Unlike your cabinet drawers which are on slides and so easy to move, the DW and fridge drawers almost have a suction action to them which require a "tug" to open. I have never checked this but I wouldn't be surprised if the screws on the appliance handles are actually bolts and so are heavtier than the drawer pulls and are built for the heavier pull action required. Using the 12" ones would give a uniformity to your appliances. I have a bank of 15" drawers, a bank of 19" drawers and 2 banks of 30" drawers which are shaker style. I have the same not quite 7" pulls on all of them with only one on the 30" drawers. They are all centered in the middle of the drawer. I know that some people center them on the top narrower drawer (cutlery) and then raise them to be set higher on the wider bottom two drawers. That drives my sense of symmetry up the wall. P.S. what do you mean centering them vertically?

Sadie, It must feel good! My HB kitchen/LR/powder room remodel is about 90% done. When finished, I will post pictures. The fireplace surround still needs concrete and steel pieces to complete it. The powder room still needs the faucet/lights/toilet etc. I have a very customized desk area. My husband is a guy who does not really have a lot of design sense. Even he is over the top with the result. I think that is saying alot. Over the years, I have converted him to a lover of minimalistic design. We worked without an architect and my husband is the GC on this project. I thought that the designer was going to have a heart attack at first. But when she realized that we knew what we were doing (learning by trial and error from previous expensive remodels WITH GCs that were useless....), things moved along. Because of the customization and our peculiar shape of the room, the measurements were very detailed and exact, as you mentioned.... I strongly suggest that you go with the installer that they recommend. They vet/train the installers so it's done right. If the reveals are messed up, then the look is completely ruined. For example, my countertop guy wanted to overhang it by 1 inch, ie standard overhang for a traditional looking kitchen. I say absolutely NO. (that was our job since we did not have a GC or architect!) You must follow the detailed "spec"... If you get an installer that does what he/she wants to do and not follow the spec, then the look will be ruined! If the installer is not sure how it should be done, then he/she has to spend the time to check with the designer for every little detail which are quite different from more traditional looking cabinets. I worked with the head designer in Seattle, who really designed HB product line and the Viola Park line. She is amazingly good! The build quality is amazing. Every trade person that has come in has remarked on the buld quality of these cabinets. I wish you the best with your construction. Mold remediation.. Yikes!

Lynetta, I admire your thriftiness and hard work! Those are great CL cabinets. I love bead board, and just brought some yesterday for my kitchen 'face lift' after 24 years! People will cringe, but I bought the PVC type at Home Depot as I have used it as wainscot in 2 bathrooms, it's bullet proof, and looks far better than the wooden bead board after time that my sister installed in her bathroom. This is my inspiration kitchen below, although mine is tiny in my old cape, at 11 x 15. I loved the cab color and am painting my natural maple cabs SW ' Softened Green'. I'm going to use the bead board as they did, below the upper cabs to the counter top. Have you installed all of your upper cabs? I see on the one in the right of your pic that the door is a bit longer than the box. I don't know whether there is enough room to drop your uppers down a bit to accept some small crown molding? My original cabinets stopped about 6" from the ceiling, and had crown, not going to the ceiling. What a dust catcher behind that crown! I just had the original crown removed, fascia added and now new larger crown at the upper part of the fascia, and this is what it looked like briefly. Original crown removed, with potential window treatment fabric draped over the cab. Now with just primer. Please try to ignore the old range hood! I had small crown put in my living room years ago, due to low ceilings in my old house. IF you have any room to drop your upper cabs a bit, I think you can add your crown. I am so grateful for this feedback I have received today. And thank you again PPF and Bryan911 for all the helpful details. I am going to see about a new upper cabinet. We’ve put too much into this project to let two upper cabinets good us up :) I had a lot of people including a designer I hired for a short time out eyes on this, and we still missed it. Just goes to show you how difficult it can be to build a house and get all the details to work out as hoped. PPF — the reason we broke up the expanse of the pantry door with shaker panels was since we wanted it to look integrates with the cabinetry and to break up the tall doors since we have 10’ ceilings. I do agree also about hinges that can be hidden. It also annoys me that they are such a bright gold when my lights and cabinet hardware will be more of an aged, satin brass. Is it easy to switch out hinges and not mess up the doors?

Thanks - we worked it out that the toe kick and shoe in front of the DW will be separate section that can be removed in the event of a repair... keeping fingers crossed that won't happen!

I decided on larger pulls for the 24"(6") and 30" (8"). I felt like the double 4" pulls on the 30" one would not be utilized together causing the drawers to get pulled unevenly from either side.

My stile question... even though no one answered ... I have decided to go with placing the pull of the upper drawer in the center of the panel and the lower two drawers on the upper stile so one does not have to bend...I have seen no real answer on postings and photos across the board on this...

I don't understand what a triple drawer with stiles is which is why I didn't reply. Do you mean a 3 drawer stack with 5 piece drawer fronts? A stile is a vertical piece of a frame. The horizontal pieces on the top and bottom of the frames are rails.

We placed the pulls on the top rail so as not to have to bend. I also like the looks of it. How big are your top drawers. I've seen a problem when a pull is mounted in panel of a smaller height drawer. If the panel is small, the rails may crowd the space around it making it awkward or even uncomfortable to use. This also depends on how tall the pull is compared to the thickness of the rail above the panel.

We put two pulls on our 36" pot drawers, but we often operate them with one hand. With good modern drawer slides such as the Blum ones, it doesn't matter if you use one pull that is off center. We have one pull (about 5-6" I think but I'm on a trip) on our 30" drawer and it looks fine. I think it would have looked okay on our 36" drawers, too.
