Ugly new kitchen, what do you say??!!!
Comments (18)You say, "You must be so pleased!" and then, you inspect the dove tailed joints in the cabinet drawers and you say, "Wow, check out this workmanship--you'd pay a fortune to have someone custom make drawers like THIS!" :-) The work is done, they're happy--be happy for them. Let them have their good feelings, and enjoy the space with them when next you see them. Kitchens are where families gather, after all. Take care, Cj...See MoreWhat do you do with the ugly heirlooms in the new kitchen?
Comments (26)meg711 I don't use it too often, but the one thing I try to use it for is when I make charoses/charoset for Passover. I hate using it to make that, too, because it's so much easier and faster to use the food processor (especially for the large batch that I make!), but my mom always used the bowl to make it so I feel compelled to do so as well (makes me feel close to her). I have also used it to chop nuts on occasion or to chop herbs (even though I find it much easier to use my chef's knife and my cutting board), because I just want to use it once in awhile. I know I've used it for some other things too, but can't recall what at the moment. PS The fish store we use grinds the fish for the holidays, so I get it already ground up when I do make gefilte fish which is once a year--for Passover (for Rosh Hashanah it's a much smaller crowd, and I'm too crazed and tired with back to school, so I buy it already made!). PPS Forgot about my other grandmother's silver. It's ornate and so not in keeping with my contemporary, minimalist leanings, but it's gorgeous and I love it! It's only a service for 8 (discontinued :-(), so I don't even use it for holidays anymore (too few dinner guests would get to use it), but I am still glad I have it!...See MoreWhat would you do with these ugly front porch columns?
Comments (14)Hi Folks - thank you for all of the great ideas. I always knew that step was undersized (we built the house 20 yrs ago and money was tight) but had somehow not Given it a second thought. I can totally see how it would transform the entrance to widen it and build a more gracious walkway. As to can see, we need much more than a paint job. We need an entire new landscape design. a couple of specific responses + yes those brackets are there to hold large, abundant hanging baskets which I usually purchase around Mother’s Day. They do give the front some interest in the summer. yes those “grey things” are planters, which I plant with greenery in the summer. I should have moved them after i Removed everything last fall but I was in a pandemic funk and didn’t get around to it. *shrug* I do plan to replace the coach lights when we paint with something more lantern-like. the house numbers are on the mailbox, which will also be painted. the columns are indeed just lumber nailed together to form a very crude style. No dimensional pieces with architectural flair - just boards. Good suggestion to see what’s underneath. Might be a quick fix to re-skin them. as for the Cracker Barrel color scheme - this made me laugh out loud. Glad I didn't know before now this is the association one makes when one sees our house. At least it will only haunt me until the painters come in a month or so. It’ll be a much more neutral palette with taupe grey, snowbound white trim and probably a navy door. Still working on that. thanks for the Izzy love. She’s a sweetheart. She’s a Coton de Tulear - which is in the Bichon family. Best dogs ever! thanks for your help. Definitely got the ideas flowing...and the budget - much to my husband’s dismay. Cheers to Spring!...See MoreUGLY volcanic stone siding: what to do about curb appeal for resale??!
Comments (37)Paint the white downspouts a dark colour so they disappear against the stone. For the street-side view, perhaps some wider trim around the window. It would be good to plant something between the shrubs. Something else to look at besides the expanse of stone. If it's too late to plant decent-size shrubs, I think tall grasses would look great. Very MCM. Larger exterior lights are always attractive and relatively budget-friendly. This is not an unattractive house - the stone gives it a cool masculine vibe. But some of the design choices (e.g. siding colour) don't bring out its best. ( LOL shutters??) Thankfully these are relatively easy to undo. The burgundy colour in your stone would look great with navy or slighty lighter blue, for example in an accent colour to spray paint the chair on your porch. Or for the doors. It's a classic colour combination in men's clothing. like this https://www.theberkshirehouse.com/articles/black-houses https://downleahslane.com/dark-exterior-ideas-to-revolutionize-your-house/ https://www.beneathmyheart.net/2020/07/trend-alert-dark-home-exteriors/...See Morejakuvall
