anyone has 8' square pendant light for their island?

I have been on my quest to get the "right" light for my 52"x36" island. Getting so much help from many people here (thank you again, Jill!). Here I am asking for another advice.

Does any one have 8"W square lights on their island (hopefully similar sized as mine)? The light I was thinking of the Ballard design's small carriage light. It's 8" W square with 12"H. My ceiling is about 8' (7'and 11" to be exact).

Wil this light (two of them?) work for my island?

I have been following your quest for a light. As I think my island will be about the same size. I'm not there yet in thinking, but, I am looking at 6" pendants, I thought 8 might be too big! KD is going to mock them up for me in some drawings, but we haven't gotten there yet!

I am looking at Hubberton Forge lights, they are made in Vermont, we have a dining fixture from them...love it! They have several pendant styles to choose from.....with lots of different finishes and glass styles....take a look, see if anything is appealing!

If/when I get info from my KD on sizing I'll share with you!

Uh, where do people's heads go? Or do you have high ceilings, so that the pendants can hang above head height? Remember, over the course of time there will be many different people in that kitchen. There are a lot of people these days who are 6'5", 6'6", even 6'8". And one of the places where people's vision often doesn't see things is right at the level of the top of their heads. Low-hanging light fixtures are seriously dangerous for tall people.

The answer is recessed lights not pendants. A room can only visually support 1 or two things dangling from the ceiling. An upside down forest is too visually busy.

I did a search for "hood over island", here's the result. Through the first 3 pages most didn't have pendants, but there are some and it will give you an idea. I personally would go with cans. :)

I'd go with smaller to med 2 lights 10" or if you are doing a lantern as they have little visual obstruction and you can get a way with a bit larger light. A single at only 11" will be terribly dwarfed on an island just shy of 7 feet. You can do the balloon on a string test and push pin them to the ceiling over the island: two balloons blown up to 10" so you can better visualize if you think you need to go smaller or larger a little you can then try it again. You want about 30" between your fixtures... a pinch less is no big deal.

I like the Ballard light! Try to do a mock up with the sizes to see how it works out.

christine40, I looked at Hubberton Fore. I really liked some of Hubberton Forge pendants, too! But they seem to be a bit too expensive especially, if I am doing two of them...

And they are having a sale on Ballard Design with free shipping - should NOT be the only reason to choose a certain light fixture, I know... :) I will make a box island and mock it up to see if t will look too big.

Yes, those made in USA hand forged lights are no bargain that's for sure! But I found I love their styling, and with my dining fixture, I can attest to the quality.,...it's by far the heaviest, nicest light I've ever had!

I guess, at least you get what you pay for, of you are willing to pay! I saw some others I liked on line, but the price was only slightly less...not worth it to me! Let me know what you end up with, I'll let you know where I end up too!

I know... The Ballard Design one has the origin of the country as China... :)

I've seen the Ballard Design pendants, and they are pretty small in person. Maybe it's because it was hanging next to the bigger one. I say go for it. According to your mock up, they look about right. If you don't like them, you can send them back. Pendant lighting is really holding me up, too! I need for my pendants to put out some light, since my kids also use the island for homework, etc.
