Mix and Match Hardware???

I am thinking about mixing/matching hardware in the kitchen, but am unsure how to do it. My perimeter cabinets are white and the island is dark espresso (reads black). I'm thinking about mixing either the finish on the hardware - polished nickel on the white and ORB or black on the island. Or doing a mix of different shapes - round knobs, cups, varying sizes of pulls, and maybe incorporating drop pulls. I think I will do either mixing the finish or mixing the styles - I'm afraid doing both will be too much (kitchen is not large enough to pull off).

I'd love to see pictures of your mixed and matched and also your thoughts on where to place what if I'm mixing styles. Or how I should begin to think about it (aside from going back to the showroom which I can't do until next Thursday and I'm all about instant gratification!)

You have got to check out sabjimata's awesome, multiple hardware styles / finishes kitchen! I don't know if it's in the FKB but I'm sure if you do a search here on GW Kitchens you can find it, and I bet on her blog as well.

I like different hardware finishes on different cabinet finishes. For me, it was part of making the island more like a furniture piece or part of a fitted but slightly unfitted feeling kitchen -- it just made sense.

Thanks for all the advice. sue_b I really like that sort of "leafy" one. I'm going to check that one and some of the others on that website out. I don't know what we are doing under the cooktop, whether we are doing two pulls or knobs or what. I probably won't be opening those cabinets a lot since that's where the pans are stored and you don't need pans to microwave take-out which is the extent of my culinary talents! Thanks for the pics lavender- I'll be killing even more time checking all these out! fori- I like the faux key w/ white tassle idea a lot but DF just may not be into white tassels :) mtnrdredux I agree about doing different hardware on the island and the china cabinet- I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too busy. anenemity, I am going to do some crystal knobs for sure! I may do those on the china cabs or the glass uppers or the small drawers. I haven't quite decided yet on where they should go, but they will be there!! The reason I am thinking about the wood was because we have so much going on in the kitchen I wanted something a little plainer and I also want these to look more like furniture, and a lot of the antique armoires had the wood finished knobs. We will try to find a store near us too in order to see some things in person!

We have two different colors and style of cabinetry. We used different hardware on each. The painted cabinetry has ORB bin pulls and knobs. The stained alder has wooden knobs that match the cabinetry as does the island. We also have a Hoosier kitchen cabinet that has brass latches. I like that look. You can add so much personality with a small thing like hardware.

I am not trying to be argumentative, but the problem is that the cheap silver drive in grommet is what a lot of people consider standard. You can walk into almost any new construction here that is on the market for $500K and the cheap silver drive in grommet is what you get. The owner of my practice lives in a house that is worth more than $2M and it has this on "secondary" doors like bathrooms and closets and $12 pocket door hardware. You have a higher level of expectation of what "standard" is. Frequenting Houzz and other sites has developed this. That's fine, and I am in complete agreement with you about what sorts of details are important. But what you desire is no longer "standard", its above the standard, at least in my experience, and I look at a lot of real estate and look at details such as this. Sometimes I wish sites like Houzz didn't exist, because it takes my already high expectations and makes them higher: we are seeing photos of work that people are particularly proud of, not photos of work that is standard or average-particularly if they show details such as this.

Update! We’ve received our knob and door hardware and the lockset for our new entry door. I went with the Baldwin matte black too for interior knobs. For the entry I got the Stainless Santa Cruze lockset. I also took the shutters down yesterday! I can’t wait for our exterior doors to arrive. Those brick beds are crumbling more every day. I can’t wait for it to cool down so I can work on getting those out. New storm windows are next. Things are coming together.

Awwww...thanks guys! Check out Segbrown's kitchen too because she was an inspiration.

Below I linked a blog post on I did on mixing finishes. Has pics from different design magazines, etc that are really polished looking despite a variety of finishes--from lighting to hardware

In short, my opinion is that if you keep to a siimilar/non-competing *style* you can have a few different pieces and finishes.

In my kitchen I have crystal knobs, milkglass knobs, antique brass bin pulls (plain and decorative) and cafe pulls. also satin nickel cafe pulls and polished nickel decorative bin pulls. As well as SN and AB knobs.

There is a definite rhyme and spatial reasoning to where things were placed and symmetry and the island played a big part in dividing things up.

All this mixed hardware and it looks rather conventional. Which surprised me.
