Lane glossy white lacquer bedroom set: Help!
Comments (10)Yes I agree. If it still looks like that after all these years, I'm sure it's well made, and has not been abused. I don't think any american-made furniture (which it probably would be, being that old) of that era would have been made using any of the modern shortcuts, and not survived if it had. If it were newer, you'd inspect the bottom for construction techniques, shortcuts like staples instead of screws, or ONLY glue, and the back could be cardboard or even corrugated plastic. At this point, you'd just want to make sure there has been no water damage at the bottom, and that the insides of the drawers look as clean and nice. If you've seen all of the pieces and they look good, I'm sure they are. Sounds like a valid amount of decent furniture for the price to me. You could get something new for the same amount, but it would be crap that wouldn't last long....See MoreWhy are my brand new maple cabinets painted with lacquer chipping
Comments (14)I'm having the exact same problem too. I refaced my cabinets in 2018. The door frames are maple and the panel is MDF. No clue about any of this. The chipping started less than a year into it all, but it seemed like fairly immediately. The installer did come back and re-paint the doors that were chipped. Now, in 2021, the kitchen is so chipped, it's pretty embarrassing to even see. I wouldn't even be able to sell my house like this. I'm so sad. I'm wondering if they can be repainted by someone else, or are they irreparable. Is this a common problem?...See MoreAdvice needed: Relatively new cabinets with peeling paint
Comments (56)I am guilty of not reading all the comments so I apologize if repetitive. The first door/drawer picture you posted looks like it is the garbage pullout unit. It always seems to be the first cabinet that gets beat up in the kitchen and everyone says the same things " we aren't hard on our kitchen " . That will most likely be able to be touched up and will probably need it again over the life of the kitchen. The chips and scrapes around the post remind me of damage from a vacuum cleaner. You may think you are just running close to the leg but if you hit it and hit it again, eventually the paint will chip. Mopping with too much water will also cause damage around the toe kicks. Hopefully you can get some touch up paint and take care of these issues or see if the company can order you a replacement door. Best of luck....See MoreIs an IKEA Akurum semi-remodel possible?? Comments (34)Just an update for anyone who cares or anyone who stumbles on this thread in the future. We had decided to explore the cost for a new kitchen and we were quoted $10-15K depending on the place, labor, and materials. In a Hail Mary attempt to save thousands of dollars, we decided to take off our worst cabinet front, use a heat gun, and scrape off the melamine coating. We thought it was garbage already, so if we ruined it, then no big deal. I watched some Youtube videos, did a little blog research, chalk painted it, and sealed with polycrylic. It turned out way better than expected, and we decided to go ahead and do all of the fronts. After a week of intermittent working, we are now half way done. They are far from perfect, but will suffice for a few years at least until we can save up enough to do the full kitchen remodel that we would like to do, rather than doing the minimum to save money in an "emergency" situation. Happy to provide any details of what or how we did this to anyone who needs some guidance. Like I've said in previous comments, we are NOT handy DIYers, and this is a huge stretch for me to do a project this big. But it is working out ok, and I have not lost my mind yet. I have posted two photos here. The fronts that are more white with the black hardware are the "new and improved" versions." The yellowed, peeling doors with the brushed nickel hardware are the old ones that we have yet to fix. Best wishes!...See Morecece1213
