Why is soapstone always paired with marble?
Comments (9)We originally planned to use a pale marble for our island countertop but we could not find a piece large enough (we did not want any seams) so we switched to Ivory Elegance granite. It is creamy with gray and beige in it and compliments the soapstone. Both the soapstone and the granite were from Brazilso we felt that there was a bit of a match there LOL. Our granite has a bit less beige in it then the sample in my photo album. I am actually glad that we did not do the marble now because though I loved the look, I am a lot less concerned about the granite and its durability. Since we may be selling soon, I wanted to keep the countertop looking new. I think that might be one reason people tend to use soapstone and granite - they both generally develop "patinas" and a lived in look which can be very attractive. Here is a link that might be useful: photo album - in progress...See MoreEnvironmentally Friendly Counters & Soapstone
Comments (28)This can be done. There are a few things to consider when thinking about taking on a project like this, such as if slate is the right material for you. From there you should explore the type of slate in the pool table you are considering for use. There are basically two types of pool table slate, single slate pool tables and 3 piece slate pool tables. This will lead to further considerations such as taking in to account exact countertop sizes. We did an outside bar with repurposed pool type slate that worked well. The process of making the reclaimed slate work as a countertop was not difficult. If this is not a project you want to take on finding a fabricator may be a little challenging but can definitely done. I have included a few links for you below that you may want to look at. http://greeneprojects.wordpress.com/tag/slate/ http://www.oregonlive.com/hg/index.ssf/2009/01/two_foodies_wait_to_stumble_ov.html http://esterrepublic.blogspot.com/2008/08/as-promised-black-slate-countertop.html...See MoreFinito! one more white/marble/soapstone kitchen
Comments (102)THanks so much, Willow. Yes, the marble is polished. The slab came that way, and I thought it was going to get honed, but it didn't. I decided to try it out like that, partly because it's so pretty, and partly because I thought the kitchen needed a little bling -- muted colors, matte soapstone, brushed stainless, why not try something polished? I do not baby it. I haven't left red wine on it all night or anything, but it doesn't seem to stain at all. I do not know what sealer they used; I will contact the fabricator and find out. It was in a big jug with no label, just sharpie pen "marble sealant" or something like that. I imagine they just refill from larger containers. Yes, there are etches. I pay little attention to them, they certainly don't jump out. There is so much going on in there, that frankly I don't think they are very noticeable. I get a lot of natural light, so there are trees reflected in it. And there are tons of different colors and shadows already, maybe you can see from the pic of the slab. Not only white and gray and gold but black and rust and beige and pale pale gray, etc. So maybe it's different than having something a little less active. Or maybe I just don't see things that others do. But so far, it's been wonderful!...See MoreKitchen Island Countertops . . . Marble or Soapstone?
Comments (10)I like the soapstone perimeter with the carrara marble island top, at least 2" thick, preferably 2 1/2 with a very sculpted edge. Looks like money because it is. I have soapstone and a very small butcherblock work table (2x4) that's pushed against the wall because my kitchen is 17x11, with six doors and two windows; on any case too narrow for a fixed island. My soapstone is hard and very plain (tiny veins). Haven't had any issues with scratching or chipping. I did let some soda spilled on it sit, and it has appeared to etch it. Soapstone is user-riendly, and I have no doubt that I could resurface it myself (I DIY-ed my tops). Etching and staining are the chief antagonists to marble remaining pristine. But aged marble has a payina it's own; whomever says stuff has to be showroom fresh forever isn't living in the real world. Casey...See Morenursecynthia
