Do all of the finishes match throughout your house?
Comments (8)I don't think the entire house has to match. Here is what I have: All bathrooms have either matte or polished chrome. And within each bathroom, the light fixtures and faucets and hardware match (metal-wise). In our first floor, all the light fixtures are either ORB (kitchen/family room), black (living room), or copper (dining room). So they don't all match, but they work together. Door hardware is ORB throughout most of the downstairs. The bedrooms, which are all upstairs, have a variety of fixtures in different metals. I don't care that much about having the bedrooms consistent, but I like to have some sense of continuity in the more "public" rooms....See MoreDo all of the finishes match throughout your house?
Comments (11)You do need continuity, but that doesn't necessarily mean matching everything. Our first floor is all hand-rubbed brass from Visual Comfort. Those rooms all flow together, and using the same metal finish makes everything seem more spacious. Upstairs, brass continues into the hallway and MBR. But two rooms--my office and the guest room--have ORB. You see both at once when you look right at the top of the stairs, so I didn't want them to clash with each other. Plus, the metals give the rooms a different feeling. My office is very vintage in style. We had a hammered wrought iron bed and bookcase for the guest room to start with, so I went with a concept that combines dark metals with a crystal and ORB mini-chandelier. The bathrooms are different metals entirely. Upstairs is nickel, which I will never do again, and downstairs is chrome. I think it's pretty traditional to use different metals in bathrooms. My point is, you can certainly match everything if you feel like it. Nothing wrong with it at all. You can also mix it up. What I wouldn't do is ignore which rooms flow into each other, use a different finish in every room, or overlook the type of mood you want to set in each room. Your lighting choices in a new build are one of the first decisions you'll make that cross the line from architecture into decorating, and each of those decisions closes the door to other options. For instance, you can't do an ORB chandelier in a dining room and then later decide you want a full-on traditional George III look....See MoreMixing metals throughout the house: looking for your advice!
Comments (4)Here are some photos of the house right now, along with some inspiration pics for the new bed and coffee table my husband will be making (he runs a woodworking workshop), and a screenshot of the basic idea for the new kitchen along with some inspiration for it as well. For the coffee table I think I’ll go for a narrow and long, bench like, Japanese inspired look, but not sure if I should go with black veneer or some kind of light-coloured timber. what else is changing? As I mentioned I want to add interest and warmth so will be replacing the lighting and cabinet pulls throughout the house, will frame and hang some artwork, add a floor cushion for another lounging option in the living room, change the pillow covers on the sofa (that needs cleaning ASAP as the pictures show) to more colourful blush, light blue and golden yellow covers (as shown in another inspo pic I added, but thinking of getting them in solid linen, might be easiest to find at a reasonable price), I also plan on decluttering my display on that long TV stand in the living room. oh and I’ll be adding a rug and long white drape in the bedroom. Those are the main changes. I know it's a lot to take in, I appreciate it greatly! Would love your insight!...See MoreMismatching hardware/metals throughout the house?
Comments (1)There are no rules with hardware finishes; get what you like. I like it best when a room has the same hardware color, be it gold, black, silver or bronze. I personally like silver toned hardware: stainless steel, chrome, brushed nickel, and have silver toned hardware throughout my home. I have stainless steel appliances too....See MoreRelated Professionals
