Crown molding bleeding & grey - pics & need advice
Comments (6)Hi there, My husband and I had the same exact thing happen when we painted the trim on our barn. We were going crazy --> we would prime, paint...then the stains would appear again...prime, paint...then the stains would appear again. Long story short, we learned it was the tannin in the wood. We finally used BIN primer under the paint. Finally! No more bleeding. Like paintguy said, use BIN. We use this on ALL our woodwork now. No more worrying about those blotches. BIN is super stinky and runny in comparison to regular primer. It took some getting used to...but it is worth it. Below link with more background on tannin. Comments (12)Thanks for the replies so far. The window sill would be replaced if we go with the wider casing and may need to be replaced if we go with the narrow too. The padding out would put an inch piece of wood on all sides of the insides of the window (but not cover the glass), basically giving a wider surface onto which to attach the casing. There is just enough room for the 2 1/4 inch trim to fit and clear the corner of the crown. We mounted the crown so the top of the it would line up with the top of the casing. Here is another angle of the other kitchen. To me it looks like they took the wide casing all the way up to the ceiling and that the top of the crown covers a little corner of it. Comments (11)ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks....See MoreShould I add crown molding to my kitchen cabinets?
Comments (6)I think it depends on the overall look you'd like. For a cleaner or minimalist look, and for those flat panels, no molding or a flat, or possibly cove, molding may be suitable. I didn't like mine without the molding, but it's an old house and a traditional kitchen. Plus I didn't want to deal with any dust (and pet hair!) accruing up there. reno in progress pics...See Morecmm6797
