we installed coved corian backsplash in our kitchen. easy to clean and no seams, replacing the original tile countertop which was nightmare to clean. I guess we could add tile on top on the wall but haven't. Two bathrooms still have the original corian counters, but the contractor who built the homes did not use coved, they put in seams to make the corian backsplash about 3" high. Odd because they went to the trouble to add a wood strip along the front sandwiched into the corian to match the cabinets. I love coved finish and would also prefer to do that to a tile floor if possible. Soooo easy to clean.

I am sorry to post this late. I joined as a member because a customer has the same concern, and directed me to this post. As stated in earlier posts, Rosemary is part of the Private Collection of Corian products. This series is primarily defined by the directional patterns, or "movement", as it is known in the trade. When fabricating with this material and there are no end walls, there is usually no problem. The right-left pattern flow on the deck continues as a left-right pattern in the backsplash. However, when you have end walls, and desire end splashes, you are faced with a dilemma (just like you would have with natural stone tops, or wood grain tops, or similar). You can either match the grain of the splashes- where the side splashes would run front to back, flowing naturally into the right to left flow of the backsplash, or you can match the deck, wherein the end splashes are "waterfall" on the ends, flowing top to bottom, but forcing a direction change at the splash, where top to bottom end splashes meet right to left backsplash. Having a coved splash does not change the dilemma, but it adds a few other elements. The coved inlay amplifies any visual difference. Your eyes become more 'picky" about any deviations in look, because it is so much more smooth a transition. This is why a coved splash in a Private Collection top is something of a dilemma. And yes, you absolutely should have been made aware of this.

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

Hi A F! I ran across your post as I was also searching for some examples of 3D tile kitchen backsplashes, and I honestly did a double-take as I could not believe how much our spaces and ideas are alike! Absolutely love the photos you had posted, and though it’s been 9 months since this post and your project is likely complete by now, I couldn’t help but reply as the coincidence is too grand! A bit of background - we are in the process of a custom new build, and about to receive our cabinets from Barker Modern in the next few weeks. The layout of our kitchen is exactly like yours, except on the wall we will have two rows of cabinets with the top one going to ceiling. We ordered pantry style cabinets on the corners/end of the wall going floor to ceiling, so the very top row of cabinets is the same depth as the pantry cabinets on left and right side, and then the second row below those wall cabinets is the standard 12” depth. Ours are white also but matte, with the second row up top black. We too have the fireplace in the great room facing the kitchen, with a linear fireplace and recessed TV, and our fireplace was tiled with black, but 3D tiles in the shape of small triangles. :) We bought 3D tiles for our kitchen backsplash also, the Bethlehem Ivy Hill glossy white though, as we’ll have the black wall cabinets next to them at the top and the countertops also dark at the bottom. We are still waiting for our cabinets before we can even do the backsplash, but I would absolutely love to hear how the backsplash ended up working on your end and what option you went with. One thing my contractor warned me in picking the 3D tile, was possibly it looking odd in areas where outlets have to be installed given the texture of the tile. Not sure how that will work yet. I see you have outlets on the backsplash area also pretty much in the same areas we will, and I’m curious to know if that posed any issues or made the tile look odd. As for the rest of our home, we too have plans for cooler tones, minimal aspects, with extra-white walls throughout, lots of black and grey, and clean lines. Would love to see how your project turned out, and hope you are enjoying your newly renovated space!
