Yes, consider adjusting the cabinet first, unless you have a reason... If you cut the Silgranit, you have the tools and you are already comfortable with them, so I have confidence in you Rajivsab. I would call Blanco's number and talk to someone technical just in case they can add to your knowledge. I'd like to hear there is no risk of the kind you see with tempered glass where you cannot change size or shape since the glass was tempered "as a whole" and needs to be kept in that shape. This material is the stone equivalent of MDF, i.e. epoxy and "sawdust" made of stone not wood. With the right tools, cutting stone or epoxy is easy and harmless. So, it stands to reason that trimming its edge is doable. Silestone, Caesarstone etc are all cuttable. In a few weeks I may be doing something similar with a Silgranit or an e-Granite sink, so if you are on a long slow schedule we can study the matter at the same time. Right now I have no sink to work on. I'm thinking about putting in a ridge that would hold drainers halfway up the wall height, like what you can see on the Franke Orca sink. It would either be an epoxy'd sliver of new material added, or a slight cut in the wall surface. I'm also thinking about making my own sink out of a soapstone or an engineered stone. The shape I want is about 22" wide inside with a stepped floor (e.g. like Blanco Cascade, but 30"w is too much in a small kitchen). Or, I might get the Cascade, cut a few inches out of it, epoxy the two end pieces together, and call that epoxy'd seam a design feature. Constructing one's own sink means time spent grinding, sanding and polishing to get the drain to fit tight and snug in the hole in the sink base. There are a lot of dual mount sinks out there, but those that are meant for drop in installation cannot be substituted for undermount installation. They do not have a flat rim, which is 100% necessary in order to undermount a sink. The lip of that sink must fully contact the underside of the granite slab for a successful undermount. It will be more costly to install a top mount now and then to try to go to an undermount later. The edge has to be cut to fit the sink 100% in an undermount situation, and it also has to be polished. That is why the industry charges an upcharge for that service. Even if it's not indicated on the quote, and you don't know it's there because it's a "one price" situation, it's there. You don't do a lot of tricky extra work for free, even in more difficult economic times. If you were to choose to go with an toprmount now and attempt to upgrade later, you would have additional plumbing charges as well as additional labor charges from the granite fabricator. And, you'd have one of the worst things of all: cutting your granite on site! That's a nasty bit of business that should be done in a shop if at all possible. Even very careful fabricators can have grit escape their vacuums and granite grit destroys drawer slides and abrades floors and is just generally bad to have in your kitchen. If it were me in your situation, I would ask additional companies for their quotes, and consider different colors from them as wel. Different granites can have different pricing from different wholesalers, and that can translate into quotes that vary significantly for the same job. But, before I'd be willing to accept a quote from a lower priced competitor, I'd want to physically view some of their installations first and ask several questions. A lower price could get you into your granite counters faster, or it could just give you a huge headache because the lower priced guys were the lower skilled guys as well.

We put a drop-in Silgranit sink in soapstone at our last house and not one of the 100 people that came to the open house or any of the 10 that tried to outbid each other commented on it. The kitchen was a (tiny) total DIY project that we intended to live in for a while, until an ultrasound showed that we needed a bigger house. :) I was a bit concerned when all the comps with updates had undermounts and I know that some people fixate on that as being "high end" but it didn't affect our sale at all. Butcher block, like soapstone, has a more rustic (not sure that's exactly the word I'm looking for) feel to me and I doubt that anyone who finds the look appealing would discount the value of a wonderful sink and well thought out kitchen. We're now back to square one in the new house and I'm not totally convinced that we need to attempt a DIY undermount in soapstone/Silgranit this time. Though, I do have a sink in mind that has to be undermounted so we may not have a choice in the matter.

I have a silgranit sink from blanco which is 4 months old and just cracked as well. It cracked in a place (back side 3 inches up from bottom, horizontal crack 5 inches long) which was unlikely to be caused by anything other than a defective product. I am frankly barfing at the people on this forum who are saying the manufacturer is doing all they can/should do by providing a replacement sink. Nobody would want a replacement sink where they already have a poor quality controlled sink from a company, now knowing that they are not the only one. The company should offer a refund and labor install for the replacement. Not saying that they will do that without a fight but that is what they should do. I dont really want to hear from people who think a manufacturer should not do that because no warranty covers that. If a manufacturer is reputable, and not simply trying to cover itself, it will evaluate cases for good will and preservation of its brand name and act accordingly. I have not yet submitted my case either to the store where i bought it or blanco so i dont know if they will react with good will. Also, the idea that a garbage disposal could cause this is ludicrous. This is advertized as strong, and impervious to everyday wear. the store said that the sink was basically indestructible. I have a 400.00 insinkerator disposal which is barely audible and super low vibrations. If a sink cant stand up to that (or any other name brand disposal) then it should not be sold. Update: I am already hearing from the distributor (not the seller - the seller immediately passed the buck to the distributor who i have no agreement with) that Blanco doesnt cover labor, nor will they swap out for a stainless sink (even a Blanco brand). The way i hear this is Blanco has every right to sell you a defective sink for a custom installation and yet have no responsibility for the damage it causes except to ship you another defective sink. This is what i expected. They know that most people wont want to play hardball for what might be under 1k worth of damages. We shall see.
