Calling all you custom painted white kitchen owners
Comments (9)My cabinets are being built right now and (a few days delayed) are going to be installed Monday and painted white. I plan to get them painted onsite (right or wrong, a decision made when I placed the cab order) My cab guy recommended that my painter use pre-cat laquer finish as it is supposed to be 'much more durable and easier and faster to apply'. My painter is accustom to using an oil based enamel but appears to have no concerns using the laquer. However, I called the laquer rep ML campbell and they recommend that the pre-cat laquer only be sprayed in a booth (not in a home). My cab guy says as long as my kitchen is masked off well and ventilated, we are out of the house for a day, we should be fine. Any of you have experience with laquer enough to know if this is true - if I'm OK to have laquer sprayed on cabs in the home? Or too risky? I know the laquer is HIGHLY flammable. Sorry, maybe better for paint forum, but I've had no luck getting feedback on this and need to make a decision in like two days, and I'm just as concerned about durability of white cabs as OP. Toddler, dog, and one on the way. OP - I can say that my cab maker demonstrated how durable the laquer finish is and I thought it seemed pretty dang good. He scratched it with a knife and then used laquer thinner to 'melt' the lacquer around it and smooth out the scratch. pretty slick. Eased my concerns about touch up of lacquer cabinets vs paint (I was afraid the laquer would be harder to me to touch up with a paint brush)...See MoreCustomizing painted semi-custom cabinets
Comments (5)I work a lot with Woodharbor cabinets, and one nice thing is that you can order your legs and other moldings from White River or Enkebol and Woodharbor will finish them to match any of their cabinet finishes including any color paint. It's only about 50.00 to finish a leg or stick of crown and you get a beautiful factory finish that's guaranteed for life. It also keeps you from paying the high markup cabinet companies put on items they have to buy somewhere else, because you are in essence buying it direct from the manufacturer. I'm sure there are other companies that do it, but Woodharbor is the only one I've worked with so far. You can't beat it in my opinion....See MoreFavorite custom or semi-custom white painted wood cabinets
Comments (11)If you are near an Amish cabinetry maker, you may find they can do the kitchen for the same cost I have Crystal Cabinet Works beaded inset cabinets and I'm very pleased. I purchased mine during a "free paint" and "free inset" promotion. They allow you to combine their Keyline (less customization, lower price) and full custom offerings that keeps their pricing in the mid to mid-high category. (They were far less than the Fieldstone). They have a good reputation here and among my preferred contractors. There is a good thread here on pricing comparison of white painted shaker cabinets....See Morewhite paint or stain on custom cabinets
Comments (5)It depends on why you don't like the golden oak. If it is just the color, then a white stain might do the trick (I don't see how this is much different than pickling, though...). If you don't like seeing the swirly grain, then the white stain is not the way to go. Like the pp says, the grain will still show through. White stained oak cabinets will not look like a Peacock kitchen; they will have more movement and (potentially) look more rustic/country. The door style will make a difference as well. They could certainly be beautiful! Just look at a sample first to make sure it fits your vision for the kitchen. You don't want to hear this [grin] but our old white cabinets were melamine (good-quality Euro) and there was no chipping at all after 20+ years. Our neighbors have a custom-built white kitchen and it does have dings and chips; it's probably about 5 years old now. I have no idea what kind of finish was used. Our new kitchen is also white and I went with Ikea thermofoil. No regrets at all and so far no marks on it (6 months with kids and counter-surfing dogs). In case you haven't seen it yet, I'll link the Design Around thread for working with golden oak. It has some great ideas if you want to save yourself the hassle/expense of painting or staining. None of them look like a Peacock kitchen -- but then I always think that a mid-toned wood never looks out of style, even though the oak species (plain sawn) has been used in enough entry-level houses that people don't seem to like it anymore.
