DIY kitchen-1st time photos!

I've been lurking while doing my own 10 month remodel. After reading a wonderful post instructing how to insert pics, I'm trying it again. We've done all of the work except for running the LP line for the dual fuel range and installing the granite. Hope this works!

Yes, it works and I love it! The kitchen fits perfectly with your log home. I *love* log homes; hope to retire in one in the mountains, eventually. Pretty kitty likes her reflection in the sink, doesn't she? I'm amazed at the DIY; no need for a KD and a GC when you are obviously so capable. Congratulations!

I should add that I was able to post pics only because of the wonderful instructions given on an earlier post. Thanks to all that contributed to that post.

Catching up on this post from yesterday… it just gets progressively funnier. Since we’ve bypassed delicacy, I’m not actually concerned about the *need* for an exhaust fan… And I agree that I don’t expect a guest bath to see much use…just the general strangeness of sitting on the sofa chatting with friends, while some one is in the bathroom two feet away. How often that would be a problem? Probably never… like you said, they can go upstairs. Bellsmom-- I’m impressed with your photoshop skills. That looks really nice!! Thank you! There really isn’t another spot for a powder room. We had considered moving it to the other end of the kitchen, where it could be aligned with the fridge and you wouldn’t see it as a boxed-out area, but then it’s really IN the kitchen. And disrupts the whole layout of the area. We’ve gone back and forth on the backdoor. Bumping it out to square the room would be ideal. But it would require adding a foundation, and also removing the concrete and brick stairs that lead directly down to already existing concrete patio. So it’s not just the door… it’s the other twenty things it affects. I wanted to square the room, and put French doors on the right hand wall, but there is a tree there, and adding steps down to ground level would require removing it. I love seeing it out the window, and was unsure I wanted to take it down. The problem with this project is that we are trying to fix someone else’s poor design rather than doing it right. Which may be only marginally easier than starting from scratch. Thank you so much for sharing all your thoughts!! I will upload a photo when we have some kind of mock up of the wall… hopefully it will give us a better idea of how it might look in reality. Bellsmom’s photo kind of looks too good to be true. And I liked the idea of bookshelves, although the wall would probably be better as a sofa wall, since the room is long and narrow and the sofa depth would be better not sticking into the room.

gl - thanks for suggestions. Agree, that wood strip will ease the pain! Agree the backsplash is too busy. I think my challenge is complex because it not only has to work with a granite with tons of movement, it also has to work with my wallpaper. Not easy. As for a sink - a trusted friend, who is a real estate agent and see tons of kitchens, told about Swanstone and Blanco granite type sinks. She said they just disappear into the granite. I like them but probably leaning more towards stainless for the "safe" factor. yes, I will do an undermount. I do not have well water. Now I am concerned about my cooktop ventilation. I need to review with my contractor rebuilding my island! Of the colors in the mult-color backsplash - should I go more gold, more taupe, more brown - help. I am worst at decorating and color!

It was the first one for us too. Really loved the many decisions we made during our reno. 1) The 36" wide deep zero radius sink with a low divider really came in handy. Its amazing how much stuff can fit in this thing with still room to wash/clean 2) The double convection wall oven worked all day. Everything turned out perfect. I have no idea what conspired to make the turkey perfect this year. I am sure I won't be able to reproduce the result next year if I tried 3) The 36" 6 burner bluestar Rangetop worked all day. All six burners were in use at times, but didn't leave anything to be desired. It slowly simmered a big pot of turkey stock all day while the other burners were used to do a variety of boiling, sautÃÂ©ing, and gravy making. 4) The biggest "wow what did we do without this" moment came from the touch activated Delta faucet. I wash my hands after every step, especially when processing raw meat. being able to wash every 15 seconds at times without having to fiddle with the control was awesome, and keeps everything sanitary 5) The quartz counters really helped. Never a worry about spilling or raw meat juices, or spices, or anything else sitting on the counters. They were pretty messy all day through a rotation of meats, and eggs and milk and flour and cleaned up without a hitch. 6) stone backsplash - Cant tell you how nice it is to not have to worry about splashes during the various activities. Everything wiped off easily, unlike last thanksgiving where I scrubbed the paint off my walls trying to wipe off some of the gravy splashes. Things I wanted more of but just not possible in our size kitchen: 1) More counter space or a big island. Our kitchen and layout of spaces around the kitchen didn't allow for more. Its perfect for our every day, but would be nice at holidays like thanksgiving. 2) A separate prep sink - Day to day, its never one of the things I regret not having, but would have been very helpful at thanksgiving 3) A warming drawer. Maybe I will get one installed one day. Not a need day to day, but would be nice to put things once done when you are making several items. My oven has a keep warm function, but since both ovens were being actively users, a separate drawer would have been handy

Fantastic job!!! Wow! Clean, cozy, comfortable. Can you give details? I love how the woods go together - what types are they (floor, cabs, logs)? More pictures would be great too!

cocontom-Beautiful Maine Coon! Ours found us just before Xmas, her name is Eve.

bethv- Thanks! This is a 35 or so year old log house made of standing-dead pine logs. The floors are cypress barn siding that we left natural to keep it lighter. Perimeter cabinets are cherry with a pecan finish. The island was converted from an antique two-piece pine hutch and will be covered with cherry edge grain butcher block. We plan on cutting on the bb as there is not a single, smooth, pristine surface in this entire house. Pictures are very slow to post as I still have dial up. It took 3.5 hrs to upload the 4 pics above! Prior to the remodel, we had white melamine cabs and wood-look laminate counters.

Another great cat!
~The cabs are St.Andrews by Medallian in cherry with a
pecan finish.
~Ge Cafe dual fuel range-love it
~Kobe range hood-I bought more hood than I needed but can
run it at a lower speed with great results.
~Ticor S112 sink-was worried about the depth but
no regrets.
~Kohler Simplice single hole installation faucet-
really, really like it.
~Granite on perimeter cabs- Uba Tuba-needed a contrast.
~Backsplash will be a multi 1"x2" basketweave slate
~Cherry bb on island
~Cable halogen lights to be installed over the island and
table.
Since this house is all wood, it needed some major funk infused into it.

Very nice job. Well done! The kitchen has a great warm and homey feeling to it, and fits wonderfully into the log home.

What a gorgeous kitchen! I love log homes. My cousin built one for himself and his wife. I just loved it.

You did a great job on your kitchen. It is beautiful! Love the sweet beastie as well. Congrats. Great work! Sure is pretty!

I'm too lazy to understand how you did it...I just know it must have been a heck of a lot of work to put together that lovely space. Did the cat help? :oP

I love log homes....seeing your kitchen makes me want to see more of the house :o)

Thanks to all for taking the time to look and leave some much appreciated comments! I've been working on getting some more pictures (before and after) posted but I have the internet equivalent of snail mail. Igloochic, Evie (the cat) didn't help with construction, but was there with a hug or comic relief as often as needed. As soon as the rest of the house is back in order, I'll try to include pictures. Currently, we are routing, palm-sanding and hand-sanding our cherry bb island top.

I uploaded some photos at work today, yeah!high speed internet! Here are some before shots. Some of the upper cabinets had been replaced with small antique cupboards because they were falling off the wall.The fridge was moved which really opened up the space.

How great that you were able to make such a beautiful kitchen yourselves. You must be proud!! We're also doing our own, but so far have been in the demolished stage for longer than I want to admit! It's funny, because your stove caught my eye and I thought it looked beautiful. Then I realized it's the same as ours! Our old one died before we were ready to remodel, so we bought the Cafe (thanks to someone in gw who pointed it out to me) ahead of schedule. At least there's one nice thing in our kitchen now!

Did you make the cherry island top too?! If so, it's a real beauty! I haven't decided whether to make my own or buy one from Boos Bros. What do you think?

The island was THE spot even when it was only topped with sheetrock.I'm hoping the cherry will be all done by the end of this weekend.We can't wait to be making pizzas and playing Bananagrams, our new favorite game.
