can you suggest a free/cheap drafting program?

We are just starting the remodeling process, and we are thinking about doing the design ourselves. I'd like to use a computer program to be able to enter our dimensions and have some easy tools to design the kitchen.

I'm sure there is something available that is free or inexpensive. What would you suggest?

We tried the Better Homes and Gardens home design software. (It was a present from my DH, but I don't think he ever thought it would end up with the renovation that we're now in). It isn't free, but I don't think it is that expensive either.

CAD programs come in two kinds: easy to use and useless, hard to use and useful.

Stick to graph paper and pencils and cut-outs and you can get more done, faster.

The home design software makes assumptions that might not work for your house and kitchen.

Are you on Mac or Windows? I use iPhoto for almost of my editing - it does just about everything that needs doing: cropping, levels, effects, etc. Also what kind of camera are you using? My Nikon Coolpix can do a number of those things right in the camera. Oh hhah - just noticed the date of the OP - imagine the class is over now... Shaddy I would much prefer someone be overly cautious than to fall for some of the scams that so many of the rogue programs put out there. I personally do not use any type of registry cleaners, since I am not a registry expert I choose to simply not go there and I have not had any problems. I do know that CCcleaner is used by many many people and does have a good reputation. When in doubt about any program there is a very good website you can visit and see what they have to say about them, it is one of the highest rated sites by all the tech helper forums. Spyware Warrior Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products The short list that I put on all my windows computers are these (and of course there are others of my choice) SUPERAntiSpyware ZoneAlarm Pro but their free version is perfectly fine so you do not have to purchase the pro version. This is the free Free Download SpywareBlaster Firefox the firefox browser is not a security program but it is much safer than IE so it is the only browser I use. Plus one of the good free antivirus programs of you choice, like avast!, AVG or Avira AntiVir That is a good base protection.

If all you are worried about is crash and losing files... hard to beat dropBox for something like that. Don't need to do anything,, its like magic. Files on your your hard drive folder,, with no effort there will be a copy in your online dropbox with same folder name automatically. Delete a file from your folder, it deletes from dropbox ... but.. you can view and restore deletes at dropbox for a few days. Crash your hard drive completely, reinstall windows fresh and install the dropbox program.. the real magic quietly happens.. suddenly those folders and files all up to the minute/date in real time from when you crashed,,, reappear on your computer. Any computer you install dropbox on will have the same files on it too... as long as you use the same account/login/password. I learned the basics of Irfanview in 2 hrs. - cropping, resizing, color adj. You can embed a title in a pic., change a .gif or .png to .jpg, change an image to grey tones, set up a slide show, blur/sharpen, and much more. And it's fast. If I have to clone I reluctantly use Photoshop Elements. When I compared the results of a photo sharpened with Elements with one by Irfanview, I preferred the Irfan. Photofiltre is also freeware. Lot's of cabinet makers have free software, it that helps for your purpose. Home Depot has it online, or go to the store to have them design your project for you! IKEA has software as well made for use with their kitchen and storage cabinets and it also gives you the cost. It's probably slower to use software that works online like these do though. Good Luck!

If you're interested in a tool for 3D rendering of the space, I highly recommend Google Sketchup. I have recently been playing around with possible kitchen layouts. It is a lot of fun and fairly easy once you watch the tutorials.

Agreed, I planned my whole remodel in Sketchup and all of the remodelers I spoke to were impressed!
