Help identifying a marble/alabaster table with brass/marble legs?
Comments (3)Looking at the bottom of the pedestals -- In the photos, it looks like painted metal. Is it? The slab looks 'cast' to me. Again, it could just be the photos, but I'm wondering if it isn't some type of man-made 'cast-marble' product (similar to the stuff used on vanity tops) from the 1960's or 1970's? You said 'pock-marked' on the bottom -- could those be bubbles from something that was poured? Anyway - that's my guess....See MoreMarble for some countertops--marble owners would you do it again?
Comments (51)I know this is an old thread. But I know I read old threads when I am trying to make a decision. We put soapstone and marble and wood floors in our kitchen in 2007. So we are going on 8.5 years and I LOVE IT ALL. My kids have grown up with it. We don't baby any surface. To be clear, my style is not slick and modern. I have antiques and an older home so I like traditional materials and I don't mind a "lived with patina"-but having said that I don't think my stone has much of a patina at all. The big island is soapstone. It has a few scratches-mostly from house-sitters and the kids dragging heavy pots across it or cutting directly on it like a cutting board.. But if I oil it (which I do maybe 2-3 times a year) they fade. I did search for a long time and I picked a soapstone that was know to be harder than others with minimal white veining-so this could make a difference. I think we could have the top polished/honed again and it would look brand new. But I think it looks fine. Maybe in another 8 or 9 years. I love it everyday! The carrara marble is around the sink in the most used food prep area of the kitchen. It is honed. I just had a repair company come out (only because we had to do some other work in the kitchen and hubby asked about it) and they honed it again and cleaned it up. It looks brand new (I didn't think it looked bad before). There are a few little pits and chips that cant be fixed-but I don't think they are that noticeable. I just sealed it after the guy left. It was never really sealed before. I have gotten a few stains and I have always gotten them out. I have had etching but I learned how to get that out myself (I use sandpaper-yes and it has worked beautifully for me). I love it every day! We are about to ignore all practical advice again and put marble in our master bathroom. I hope we have as much luck with it as we did in the kitchen. In the next few weeks I hope to post photos of our 8.5 year old finishes....See MoreCan marble be completely ruined? How is your marble, years later?
Comments (42)I am planning a kitchen reno and will be getting marble on island and soapstone on the perimeters as I like that combination and contrast. I do think it depends of your own personality too. If every small etch will bother you, it is not for you. I realized I won't be very much bothered because I was reading about some threads on sinks here and I was amazed the number of people who said water spots on SS bothers them. I have had SS and porcelain and never noticed all the little things that bothers others. Now I try to look for those water spots and frankly I have to really think about it and go looking for it to find it. I personally think nothing can match the beauty of marble and to me nothing can substitute for it. Sure it will etch and may have some other perfections over years but I can live with that considering with passing years, I will have a lot of imperfections - wrinkles etcs to match the marble :). I like a lived in home as opposed to showroom perfection....See MoreHelp, my marble tile floor doesn't match my marble slab countertops.
Comments (105)Renee you must be overwhelmed with all of these comments. Your countertops are GORGEOUS, so I do hope you keep them. Sophie's suggestion to stain the floors is well worth looking into. For what it is worth my suggestion for your backsplash is to go with a simple solid tile in a lighter color that coordinates with the countertop. I would suggest you not go too small with the tile- 3x6 to 4x12 would be a good size to stick with. You want to avoid too much movement in the backsplash as the counter (and the floor) have quite a bit of movement and you do not want them competing. Let the countertop be the star of the show. Good luck and let us know how it all ends up for you....See MoreCatharine442
