butcher's block countertops: pros/cons
Comments (3)There have been numerous posts like this in the last few weeks, so if the search function is working again you might like to check on other conversations. We have butcherblock (hard rock maple) on the island in our kitchen. I love it. Period. Part is that my grandfather used butcherblock his whole life, part is that I have used it since I learned to cook, for sure. But I really love that I don't have to freak out when my kids cut on it, or a friend comes and wants to help in the kitchen, or that I can do almost anything on it and it forgives me! And I love to oil it (apparently not even close to how stoners feel!) and see how it changes with the oil. I don;t have soapstone but envy those who do. Listen to florida joshua - he has a really cool butcher block counter and he works with soapstone! Good luck!...See MorePics of kitchens w/ butcher block and marble countertops?
Comments (6)Here's my kitchen with all three! I love all three. I am glad though that I have the soapstone on the perimeter with the sink and stove because it's so impervious to anything. I also love my marble but I do NOT baby it in any way. It is honed and un-sealed -- however, I don't care if eventually it gets stained, etched etc (although 4 months later it's still unstained). But I would guess if it was right next to the stove where I'm super messy and lazy to cleanup, that might not be the case. The butcher block is really not in a high food prep area so I can't really say how it takes abuse, but there is an ever so slight crack under our coffee pot I'm assuming from the heat/steam. Comments (7)I had butcherblock counters in my last ktichen. I cut directly on them. I oiled them with mineral oil. You can oil them with mineral or other food safe oils. Or you can finish them with something like waterlox, but then you cannot cut directly on them. I was fine with the patina from cutting and even fine with the small stain from food dye (making icing for cookies--was too deep for me to be able to sand it out). But I didn't like how they held up near the sink. Perhaps if you are more careful than I am about splashing or perhaps if you oil more frequently or if you chose to finish with something like waterlox, that would take of that issue. Butcherblock is the common term for the kind of wood counters that are like cutting boards so you might find more information by searching on that term. There have been lots of thread on the topic here in the past though I don't remember any very recently....See MoreButcher block width
Comments (4)You should have an overhang off the front and sides of the cabinet it is sitting on like the counters in the other areas in your kitchen, I cannot tell by your photo where exactly the side of the cabinet is in relation to the seating overhang. Maybe if the top is .5" taller than the quartz, do the same on the sides....See Moreginny20
