Hard to Make Kitchen Reno Decisions with Sick Child!

My 3 yr old has an ear infection and high fever. Haven't slept in 3 nights. Plus I have a 7 month old who still nurses. Needless to say, I'm not thinking straight.

So on Wednesday, my GC shows up unannounced with the tile guy. I needed to make the grout decision from looking at the Custom Polyblend sample right there. I chose Oyster Gray, which was the same that seemed familiar from reading Gardenweb posts on tile. My tile is simple - Daltile subway 3 x 6 Color 100 (white that's not gray or stark). Now I'm second-guessing myself. I want the grout not to stand out but not be white or invisible. Should I have done DeLorean or Natural Gray or Platinum?

I'm not familiar with the grout colors, so I'm no help there, but I hope your kid feels better soon. A toddler with an ear infection is no fun.

I've been nursing my newborn with workers walking around, too - fun, right? Fortunately, our GC's wife is a La Leche League leader!

If it's not too late to change, do the platinum. I'm not familar with oyster gray, but we did platinum based on Bill V's recommendation and it is just that right amount of contrast without being too much.

Honestly, stop with the pesticides. Our school system has been saying for years that _one_ pesticide treatment on the hair followed by fine combing, laundering bedclothes and towels as normal, and disinfecting hats will do it. You don't have to sterilise the whole house. The lice can't live long off a host anyway. All those pesticides are going to make you sick. Also, if your knees are itching it's definitely not lice, as lice are site-specific having adapted to live in particular kinds of hair. So head lice are different to pubic lice, aka "crabs", for instance. Unless you have head hair growing from your knees, you can be sure they are cootie free :-)

Here's the problem~if you plan to quit, you can't go planning to do all these other life changing things. Buying another house may not be something you can think of now, if money will be tight and you certainly don't want to quit your job, buy a new house and plan a baby all in the same year. You'll be stressed more than you are from work. The biggest stress factors in your life, are changing jobs, getting married (which you've already done), having kids and moving. Some people can handle all that just fine but think about you. Are you okay with changes? I would also stop and think about how important family time is to you. Yes, you'll be home more with the kids during the day but if you're working nights and weekends part time, you won't see your husband all that much. You'll be headed off to work when the kids are heading to activities. You'll be at work most of the weekend while the rest of your family is at home or out doing other stuff. I remember just trying to work part time when I was in high school and how little time I was at home with my parents and brother. I felt left out of the loop. It also was a pain when the weekend came and I didn't get to do anything but head off to work. Try adding children and a husband to the picture instead of parents and the family if you ever worked part time before. My MIL used to work a 3-11pm shift at work and it killed her. She didn't get to see her husband that much. He works swing shift and really she only saw him when he was also on 3-11 (he was home while on 11-7, but in bed sleeping until after she'd go into work). She missed being home for supper, in the evenings just to watch tv, seeing her grandkids and doing things during the week. She felt left out quite often and her husband was very lonely at home alone all the time. Your husband will often be getting the meals and caring for your daughter in the evenings. Can he handle doing that himself? (Not saying he can't but there are men out there who don't help at all and are clueless) The bottome line is the decsion is still totally up to you. You just need to weigh all the facts and decide if you can handle the money situation (it will still be tight if you take a part time job because they don't usually pay all that much and options are limited) and some other changes that will occur. I'm not saying you should not do it but I thought of other things that it seemed others weren't. They were focusing on pretty much all the good aspects but you need to know the bad, too in order to handle this. You can't go into the situation blind. Good luck to you. ~Leslie~

I'm so glad it's not only me!!!!! :-) I keep wanting to tell my builder that I am normally a very reasonable person. But I know he wouldn't believe me anyway. At this point, my indecisiveness about cabinets is delaying the whole project! Ugh. I do think, though, that there are many things that make it hard to be decisive: 1. Some of us have never done this before, and there is a LOT to learn. I frequently make a decision only to learn later that there are good reasons not to do it that way. OR I get conflicting information (what's better? particle board or plywood for my cabinet boxes?) and don't have the knowledge base to judge for myself. 2. It's hard to shop when you can't see the prices. How many times have you spent hours finding just the right tile--only to discover days later when you get the quote that this particular tile requires special handling (or whatever) and the labor will now be more than budgeted? Or that the roof shingles you've selected are discontinued in a 30-year and are now only available as a 50-year--which means more expense. Back to the drawing board in both situations. And it can be even harder to find something I like the second time around; after spending so much time finding just the perfect thing, it can be hard to let that go and settle for something else. 3. As someone mentioned above, everything is interconnected. Today, for instance, I am having serious second thoughts about the bathroom tile, after I saw something similar at a friend's house and did not care for it. But if I change my tile color, I will also want to change my vanity stain color. So back I go to the tile store--and the cabinet shop, where the KD will probably shoot me for proposing yet another change. 4. Sometimes things happen that necessitate or encourage a change. For example, the plumber discovered that the plumbing in one bathroom was not up to code. The wall behind the sink had to be opened up, and suddenly I saw the opportunity to put in a new recessed medicine cabinet. But this meant moving an outlet that had just been put in. Or then there was the day that the sheetrock went up and suddenly a different bathroom seemed really dark. So I requested an additional recessed light. The electrician thinks I'm wishy-washy when things like this happen. I think I'm just reacting to changing circumstances. But when I think about the YEARS I spent designing this house, I know that the "indecisiveness" will ultimately get me exactly where I want to be. Yes, it's excruciating to me, to the people working on my house, and to my very patient husband. But everyone agrees that the house so far is flat-out stunning. It took a lot of back-and-forth to get the design just right, and I guess it's just going to take a lot of back-and-forth to get the interior details just right too. Oh, and by the way, about the dark cherry cabinets? I had the same exact conflict when I started this. I always imagined I would get cherry cabinets because it would go well with the dark wood trim in my house. But it wasn't sitting 100% right with me. What finally helped me make my decision was when I took out all of the magazine pages I'd piled up over the years and began narrowing them down. But instead of pulling out pages where I like a particular detail, like I usually do, this time I selected out only the ones where I liked the overall look. At the end I realized, much to my surprise, that out of the 10-12 I loved best, 90% had white painted cabinets. And that was that.

Whitewashed wood often turns pink or ambers. Because wood tannins get pulled through and affect the finish tones. And wood is photoreactive. Light changes it's color over time. Plus, different trees will have different mineral content from different growing condition, and that affects both changes that wood goes through. Just look at all of the older 80's whitewashed kitchens that are pink and yellow. That's reality after just a couple of years time. Uniformity in wood color is impossible without tinted clear coats called toners, that masks the wood grain. Thats considered a low end production process, because the whole reason to use wood is to see the grain. Slight variations in color are what let you know that it is real wood. And it will still be photorective. Even if everything starts out the perfect whitewashed shade, over time, maple ambers and will no longer be white. It's wood. You can't stop wood from behaving like wood. To get the perfect shade of whitewash, most Euro makers will use laminate or a high tech multi piece thermofoil. It's more durable than wood as well. The cabinet retailer should have set those expectations from the beginning. And all of the missed tries should have given you pause to research and find that out on the front end. What they never ever should have done is string you along for 2 years. They owe you a refund. And you get to start over. Take that opportunity to change your parameters. Look at lines that do that finish as a standard and not a custom finish first. There will still be variance and wood aging issues. You have to decide if the way that it will look in two years time is what you want. Because that's the far longer look than fresh white wood. Or, change to the laminate that will always be the perfect color.

We have oyster gray and I'd consider it more of a beige. So if you want gray, I'd do one of the others.

portland... I hope your little one feels better soon. Oh how I long for (aka desparately miss) those sweet days at home with my boys as babies.

That being said, I suggest you post a new thread with a title asking for 'Tile expert advice needed" or Need Expert advice on grout"... something like that. Bill V. is one of the forums resident tile experts and typically responds with very specific advice to threads like that. He won't know to look at this thread by reading the title. I don't know much about grout colors so can't offer you any specific suggestions.

Glad she's better! Are you in Portland, OR, or somewhere else? Just curious, there are a few of us around here. I also have a 3-year-old and a baby (5 months), plus some older kids (5 total). It's hard to make decision no matter what, but especially when you're running on no sleep!

Ear infections are the worst. I remember my then 18 month screaming non stop until I got the medicine going. Then I got one myself and realized why she'd been screaming.

We've since found some analgesic ear drops (I think they are called Auralgan). It's sold over the counter and you just warm it a bit and drop it in. The relief is almost instantaneous. We've found we can get thru minor infections with just this, but for the really bad ones resort to the antibiotics.

I know this is OT but I remember when my youngest (now 21) was about 10 months old and I was getting ready to give him a bath. I can just see his little body standing holding on to the side of the tub between my knees as I was testing the water. All of a sudden I look and there is green ooze dripping continuously out of his ear. My heart sank to my toes and my legs went weak. I felt like the worst mother in the world as he bounced and laughed waiting for his tubby. Never a fever, never pulled his ear, never got cranky, I had no way of knowing he had a raging ear infection. As it turns out... he's a 205lb muscle bound kid with a very high pain threshold like me who is half his size. Funny... out of all the good I've done for my boys... that is one memory that holds fast and strong.

Yes, we're in Portland, OR. I've seen pdxgal's postings, so I knew there were some Portlanders on Gardenweb. 5 kids, Snowyshasta! I'm throwing in the towel with 2 kids.

I'll have to try the Auralgan drops. The 3 yr old really did not like to eat any of the medicines, and we practically tried them all. The past week has been very trying with no kitchen, screaming child, and needy infant. I'll be glad when the kitchen is done. Thanks for everybody's kind words.

I can't help with the grout (except to warn that you should also buy caulk for the line between the counter and the BS in the same color you do your grout in....it's a MUST). But, I can send you a warm mommy hug from afar.

I am still completeing my kitchen remodel (I have the slowest constractor on the planet...two years). My son was sick most of them and he was a handfull so I can't imagine doing it with two.

I spent many an evening in the hospital working on details from afar....man that sucked! And even though he's much better now, I'm really dreding this week when we have to start work again (we took two weeks off so I wouldn't kill the staff) Locking the cats in with the dog and a 3 year old....ya that's gonna be fun! Hey....maybe we should trade :oP
