Need pictures and advice on sink not centered on window, please.
Comments (14)Thank you all for your help. All of the links were great, laxsupermom. I knew they were out there but I couldn't find them. Palimpsest your photo and thoughts focused DD on the correct issues to work on. The sink she wants to use is the Kohler Prologue. This will give her a good size sink basin and enable her to have a pullout trash can under the drainboard/wet prep area of the sink according to a few KD's. Her wall cabinets will seem to be symmetrically placed around the window and she wants a pendant light over the sink so now she thinks it would be better to have the basin portion of the sink centered on the window. The wet prep area would extend beyond the right edge of the window but with the faucet centered on the basin and the window do you think this would accomplish the trick of making things look right? Buehl, on one of laxsupermom's links, you commented on how a DW should not be between the range and the sink. This was the exact issue that started DD on thinking about moving the sink off center to the right. If she can gain enough space she can move her DW to the left of the sink. Right now it's driving her crazy because it always seems to interfere with prep and clean up. If she centers the sink basin on the window she will have 21" from the DW to the left side perpendicular countertop. Does that sound like enough space? Thanks again, everyone, for your thoughts. Comments (5)Just a few days ago, I had my sink and faucet installed off center of our window. The window is 35" wide and the faucet/sink center is at about 12" from the left of the window. I'm sure some would consider this a terrible mistake, but I'm ok with it so far. Of course it's only been 2 days at this point, so take that for what you will! Off-center is not my ideal, but it allowed us to have a straightforward layout that worked with Ikea cabinets, and gave us the kind of counter space and distance between sink and oven that we wanted. I think the fact that we do not have uppers on that wall makes the asymmetry less stark than it would be if uppers surrounded that window symmetrically. The angle from which you will most often view that area may be worth considering, too. In my kitchen, the most frequent viewing angle minimizes the appearance of asymmetry a bit....See MoreDoes sink/faucet have to be centered under a large window?
Comments (15)You have such a huge wall of windows there, I really think you could put the sink anywhere you want and it would look fine. I'd go for what functions best. Found some pictures of sinks that aren't centered under the window. I think they look great. I'm not a big fan of symmetry though. I don't "need" things to be centered. I realize some people do. :) [modern kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/modern-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2105) by brisbane kitchen and bath Kim Duffin [contemporary kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2103) by san francisco architect OR [contemporary kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2103) by los angeles kitchen and bath Mal Corboy Design [traditional kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2107) by cincinnati architect RWA Architects [contemporary kitchen design[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-kitchen-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_709~s_2103) by san francisco architect modern house architects...See MoreHelp! Should my sink be centered under the window?
Comments (10)Thanks, everyone, for your input! Buehl, I thought long and hard about having the d/w and gas range next to each other (with a 1.5" filler/barrier). Actually, it's what I have now because the house came that way, and it's never been an issue. Even with the island in front of the d/w and range, with a 42" aisle, I think it will be okay for my family. I can't think of a time when I'd be cooking and have the dishwasher door open at the same time. Besides, there's another aisle -- which is the primary passageway in, out, and throughout the kitchen -- on the other side of the island. I know it's hard to picture, but I really (embarassingly) do not know how to scan in the layout that I have! I will have to teach myself on another day when I am not so pressured to post a layout. Anyway, close of business has come, and I chose the sink to be centered with the window. So . . . this is how it goes: The total length of the wall is 164.5 inches. There is a 79.5" empty space in the middle of the wall that runs from the end of an upper cabinet on the left to the beginning of the range hood on the right. By "empty space" I mean that there will be no upper cabs there. Anyway, I have now finalized the plan so that the center of the sink is centered in that 79.5" space. I'll buy a window that will be centered over the faucet -- maybe a 60" window. That will leave 9.75" of space on each side of the window, enough for a five-inch trim and 4.75" of wall left over. BTW, I wouldn't mind if the sink had not been centered on the WALL -- I just minded that it wouldn't have been centered with the window. It looked really weird in the picture, kind of like the room was tilted. Anyway, I hope it all looks good AND functions well when it's finished!...See Morebeatrix_in_canada
