Will knobs and pulls help me like my oak cabinets? What size?
Comments (30)I came across this post and just wanted to add that in our old house, we had the cheapest of cheap builder grade 80's oak cabinets that were a terrible shade of orangish. DH, like a lot of men, has an issue with painting "the wood!" "You'll never get the same finish!" Well, actually, yes you can as long as you use a good oil based paint. But anyway...so we comprimised and picked up some "Liquid Sandpaper" from Home Depot or Lowes (can't remember which). You put it on with a rag, wait a bit, and then you can apply a new stain--though it should be darker or brighter (cherry) to cover whats there. It works by opening up the surface and allows the stain to penetrate into the finish...then after 2 hours it "closes" back up and holds in the stain. It took us all of a night to do the entire kitchen. We took the doors off and all the hardware of course to get the best finish on the door fronts. Total cost...about 30.00 with plenty of leftover product. And we too had what looked like "wood paper" on the sides of the cabinets but it took the stain just as well as other areas. I believe thats because the stain doesn't actually get all the way down to the wood, but rather gets encased just under the top coat. But I'm not sure, because it certainly looked like the cabinets had always been the new color--the wood grain was apparent and the finish retained a beautiful shine after. I'm not saying its necessarily a permanent fix but the ease and inexpense created instant gratification. And in our new house when we remodeled the kitchen...it was off-white cabinets or else! :) They are just so timeless......See MoreHow many pulls on 30 inch drawers?
Comments (5)On stacks of drawers 30"+, I generally recommend one pull centered on the top drawer and two on the lowers, larger drawers. I've also recommended a longer pull on the top drawer (6", say) and regular size on the lower drawers (4"). Restoration Hardware tends to have lots of different sizes, and I find that the kitchen looks a little more custom if things are mixed a little....See MoreAdvice please. How many pulls to put on a 33' drawer?
Comments (9)I have two pulls on my 36" pots and pan drawers and 30" dish drawers. I also had the same concerns as you because I had decided I wanted to be able to open ANY drawer with just one finger, regardless of size or weight. I decided the keys were a)the pulls needed to have something to hang onto easily, so I chose strap pulls, and b)the sliding mechanism needed to be perfectly smooth; the heavy duty glides with blumotion that my cabinetmaker used fit the bill....See MoreDouble pull placement on drawer front
Comments (11)I did double pulls on my wider drawers (>= 30") and really prefer the look to single. I think they look more like fine furniture with the two pulls on wider drawers. Yes, I usually just open with one hand/handle, but in 9 years only a couple have gone out of alignment -- and all I had to do was detach/reattach the drawers from the glides and they were back in alignment -- easy! This includes my pots & pans drawers, (36"W) glass dishes (30" to 33"), etc. -- all heavy contents. In fact, the only "drawer" I've had problems with is my single-handled trash pullout, but that's b/c everyone pushes down when compacting the trash or recycling. That door has to be periodically readjusted by adjusting the vertical alignment of the door (I find I just have to push or pull on one side or the other, so not difficult). If you have good hardware, then you won't have to worry about alignment issues. To me, short pulls on wide drawers look dwarfed or "wrong" somehow -- but how anyone feels about the look (OK or not OK) is personal preference....See Morecflaherty
