For all who have a cat(s) and have stress during their renovation

Are you stressed out during your renovation ? Unexpected expenses ? Did you find items you loved but then discovered you couldn't afford them ? Bad seams in the granite? Floods ? Are you dealing with mess ups by handymen, GC's and sub contractors? Rude or incompetent KD's?

Time to take a break and laugh...see link.

These videos made me laugh when I was sleeping on the floor and the ceilings and walls had been stripped down to slats,...oh and the bathroom wasn't finished(no toilet/no bath)...Did I mention the 2 people working on the job left an opening by a steam pipe ? My cat disappeared under the subfloor and was walking on my downstair neighbors thin sheetrock ceiling...

I love Simon's cat. The only kitty related disaster we have had is that our old guy has, periodically, taken great exception to the muss/noise/disruption. And when he is annoyed he lets me know by pooping on the couch. Luckily I KNOW this about him and have the couch protected with fabric over one of those waterproof mattress protectors.

He has made his opinion known twice now. The day the flooring guys were here and the day they hung the cabinets. Oh--and he marked my range hood flue cover. Luckily it was still in plastic....

One of my acquaintances is shocked I've not banished him outdoors...but I wouldn't do that. He has a right be grumpy. He's 18. That's ANCIENT in kitty years. Heck, I'm aggravated at this stage and I'm only 52...

My husband and I recently brought home a 3-month old female kitten as a companion for our 2 year old male. (Male is neutered, and kitten is scheduled to be spayed.) The initial introduction went pretty much how we expected (hissing, growling, adult cat batting at the kitten) but we didn't keep the kitten completely isolated. Whenever either of us were home, the kitten would go into the pet carrier, and set on the floor for the older cat to "explore." Once he stopped hissing at the kitten, after about 2 days, then we'd allow the kitten to come out and play, while we closed the adult cat in the kitten's "safe room." They had a chance to get used to each other's scents in a calm, low-stress environment. At night we would switch their cat beds so that they could learn to equate the other cat's smell with calm and comfort. After 5 days, we started letting them roam around together (closely supervised). There was a small bit of posturing, hissing, growling, and pawing, but the claws never came out, and the big cat always backed off if the kitten acted like it was being hurt (which it never was... Drama queen...) By 7 days, the big cat had adopted the kitten. He grooms her for hours, and sometimes when we give him a treat, he nudges it at the kitten. They play rough, and it still worries me a little when the kitten cries out, but after a minute or two they're cuddled up together inside one of their cat beds. I don't think that there's a magic "way" to introduce cats to each other, nor do I think there's anything wrong with bringing home a new kitten when you already have an older pet. I don't think that it's "selfish" to want to give your love to more than one pet. The best way to introduce new and old pets to one another is to expect a little friction, be prepared for it, and use your good judgement. You'll quickly learn which behaviors to watch out for, and which ones are simply a part of the introduction process. We now have two *VERY* happy and loving kitties, and the only advice that we followed, the only instructions that we stuck to, were our own.

A couple of ideas, maybe not so good, maybe they don't apply, but here's what's on my mind. If Cali is stalking Amy all the time, that must be incredibly stressful for poor Amy! How about a time out for Cali if she is that wound up? My cat would quite literally jump me for the first year we had him- it was unbearable for me. When he would do it, we would calmly put him in a room by himself to decompress. He had all the amenities he needed in there except stimuli. I'd leave him in there for 15 minutes or so, then if he immediately tried his behaviors again, back in he would go for another 15-30 minutes-- and so on. He learned to associate the behavior of jumping me, with being isolated, and it settled down a lot. Every once in a while he still does it, and right back in time out he goes. When you do something like this, it can feel a little hopeless at first because it feels like you are constantly attending to this (same as with a little human kid), but in time as they learn the inevitable consequences, the behaviors will hopefully change. Maybe Cali needs more hunting play? Something to help her burn off all that energy she has? That's definitely a problem with my boy, he needs to be played with in a way that satisfies his hunting instinct and wears off energy- if he gets this activity, then he much mellower and well behaved. BUT, don't make the mistake I did, which was to get the laser pointer and start playing with him when he got wound up-- that just led to him getting wound up in order to play laser pointer! You have to initiate the play time on your schedule, so they don't associate it with bad behavior. Also, in regard to litter boxes, I just recently saw on My Cat From Hell, a similar situation with a cat who could not use a litter box because the other cat was always attacking him. The host suggested that the problem was the distinctive noise of traditional clay litters when a cat steps in them. That sound would bring the other cat from anywhere in the house. He suggested trying a different type of litter, like wheat litter, just because it would be stealthier for the other cat. (As an aside, I didn't really care much for the wheat hull litter when we used it, but there are other types to try too). Finally, I think cats can definitely learn from positive reinforcement, so any time you catch Cali being civil with Amy, even if it's just relaxing across the room (hey, it might happen at some point), make a point of petting her and telling her how good she is being. Every cat I've had has loved to be told whaaaaat a goooood kitty you are! Good luck. It's rough. I'd like to get another kitty at some point, but am afraid that this cat we have now would act like your Cali, and I'm not sure I'm up for the challenge at this point.

I would first take him back to the vet and have a full exam done, including blood work. The fact he sprayed while jumping off the sofa just doesn't sound normal. I once had a cat that started spraying in the house after years of being the perfect cat. He would always choose unusual areas, such as my robe while I was sitting at the breakfast table! He was later diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. If it turns out he has nothing medically wrong with him, then I think you should try your third option. If I read your post correctly, you stated he has always been aggressive to your cats, so this additional stress of the move and 2 new cats may be more than he can handle right now.....especially since you said he's easily startled and appears insecure. ((((iyanini14)))). I feel for you and wish you luck. Some years ago we were building a home and had to run off our builder... fired him. Finished it ourselves hiring our own subs and learning along the way at 1/2 complete. Never again. Uhg. Hmmm. After well over a year since I started packing and we moved all furniture out, 8 months with a temporary kitchen, 6 months now with no kitchen, and living with no furniture except the bedroom, no flooring (Much is DIY)... we are finally seeing the light.. or I should say a glimmer! Flooring is in (and covered with Ram Board, which was a bummer as we loved looking at something complete!). The cabinet maker said they'd start putting cabinets in soon as we finished painting and installing our baseboard (week after next I hope!), but then we've got the vent to install and vent cabinet, a pass-through window to finish, and the glass people (for the cabs) are special ordering, so that's a while away. Still, we have much electrical, plumbing, and purchases to do. I'm still hoping for June. Ha! I hate all the purchases! First you have to figure out what you want, then you have to pay for it! Good heavens, I see now why faucets and pulls are called "kitchen jewelry"! My sanity has been pretty good despite set-backs. The two things I love are cooking and gardening. Without a kitchen, no cooking, but we simultaneously started working on our landscaping (older 20 year old home, dire need for re-do everywhere). While the yard has put us behind, I love working outside : ) All is good here, but it's just rush-rush, exhaustion, soreness!

Oh cat mom funny story that you can relate to..
I was desperate to make pizza since I hadn't had it in 2 years !! during this escavation, I mean renovation. I put the (heavy)pizza stone on the counter(Soapstone). BIG MISTAKE. My cat has discovered how to climb from a windowsill to this counter. I never had a windowsill before so this is a big adventure for her (when I close the blinds/window and she has no interest so it's not like she's on the counter all the time). Well I went out and came back to find the pizza stone in 4 pieces on the floor. She must have flew through the air like on a snow sled as the stone slid across the smooth SS counter. She denied it of course. I made the pizza on a baking sheet, it came out delicious and all were happy. But she did have a guilty look all night. I wish I had a video of it. What a sight that must have been.

Msjee-you are so nice. good for you not banishing him. Did you say 18 years old ? WOW.
They don't have many ways to express their emotions and can't drink alcohol..and they are so close to the ground. Can you imagine the dirt & dust they are dealing with ?
I gave her extra vitamin C and lecithin(for stress) and set her up on the mattress with blankets in whatever room wasn't being worked on. She got used to the routine real quick, with the door closed she felt safe and fell asleep.

Too funny. Mine doesn't act like he is too unhappy with all the mess, but he did quit sleeping on his window perch and made a bed wherever a plastic tarp was on the floor. Why? I don't know. But he's back to his perch now.

Omg, eatrealfood, for the first time I have had to wipe food off my iPad. Bits of toast crumbs stuck all over it. I should know by now what kinds of threads not to open when I'm eating!

My cat became the official inspector. He batted every wire, peered into every hole and tested the ladders for safety every time they were set up or moved.

And yes, he's THAT BIG! The upper cabinets are 18" above the countertops.

My cats LOVE that the electrcian left the old wire holes in the BS walls!!! They pull the insulation out bit by bit, and bat it around the kitchen! Since I STILL don't have any overhead lighting , the UC lights are on a lot, and they like to nap under those hot lights! YES, on the counterrs, which are STILL plywood! That reminds me, I need to run over to the shop and check on the progress of my countertops, since they are (yet another) month overdue!!!

spring-I have holes in the BS sheetrock & guess who keeps peering at them looking for "jerry" or his relations.

The video was great too, but the mental image of your cat riding the pizza stone is was really got me. Oh to be a fly on the wall...

My grandfather's cat would actually stretch up the door and jiggle the knob with her paws. She could reliably open to old lever handles (sort of like a toilet handle) and could sometimes open the round ones too. She was an indoor/outdoor cat and fiercely independent.
