Help-white cabs have a green undertone that I don't like!

After eight years of planning and saving, my new creamy white cabinets were delivered last week and I'm not fond of the color. I paid the manufacturer extra for a color match to my trim paint (BM Opaline) but the color doesn't really look the same. It does in a general way, of course, but the undertone of the cabinet color is green while the undertone of my trim (and other paint/furnishings) is pink.

I approved a sample color that was fairly close to my trim color but not quite as pink. I wasn't totally thrilled with the match but the designer was pressuring me to decide on the color before I left for vacation in August. The actual cabinets are even less of a match. A representative from the cabinet company thinks they all look the same and is refusing to change them. The differences are subtle when you look at the colors up close but are more pronounced when you look at the big picture. The cabinet color looks terrible with the paint I have in my foyer and dining room and I really don't like it - there's no harmony at all! To change all of my paint in the other rooms means that my sofa and curtains may need to be changed, too, since they are all in the "champagne" color family - pinkish undertones. Even my 10-year-old DS can see the difference!

The installers just arrived to install the cabinets even though I told them that I'm not happy with the color and I don't want them installed. Would you give in or would you push to have them redone? Would you agree to pay for the change or would you ask them to split the cost? Am I crazy to care about the undertones when the colors are close? I can't believe this is happening when I paid for the color match to avoid this very problem (I'm a color-sensitive person)!

Did you pay by credit card? I'd fight tooth and nail. They should have delivered a match to at least the sample.
If the entire order of cabs is the wrong color, that is not a minor factor....

They don't accept credit cards so I paid by check. At this point, I owe only 10% of the final cost.

They are claiming that that the sample and the cabinet colors match. Of course, the cabinet representative looked at them in the morning on a somewhat cloudy day - it was hard to see much of anything. When the owner of the cabinet showroom and designer were here, it was a sunny day. Since they couldn't claim that they were really the same in the sunlight, they took the samples to the darkest part of my foyer and then proclaimed them to be perfect match. I agreed that they would be a perfect match if I lived in a cave.

I successfully put a stop to the installation this morning and am still waiting to hear from the owner of the cabinet showroom. Wish me luck!

Well, I'm sitting here with a bowl of dried A. pringlei flower stalk (all the leaves are long gone) on one side of me, and a bowl of A. foeniculum flower stalk on the other side...and thinking about how to describe the differences in aroma! They are definitely different. Yes, A. pringlei is just as strongly aromatic (actually more so, in these dried samples), but with a more lavender-like fragrance, and mostly lacking the suggestion of anise that I get from the foeniculum. Yet not exactly like lavender (L. angustifolium) either...as I sniff away at a handful of that too... Well, words fail me... (Maybe I should pull out a wine magazine and peruse the descriptive range of scents and flavors...venturing far off topic, sorry, but it never ceases to amaze me the vast range of sensations those wine critics glean from an $8 bottle of plonk - kind of makes one wonder why they'd ever waste money on the more expensive ones, LOL!) Rick, in the article you attached, it's the flavor of A. pringlei that the author rates as "good" - apparently, he uses the leaves and/or flowers in salads. Hmm, never thought of that... Lori

Terri, We are not wine drinkers either nor are my other family members. I had a birthday party a couple weeks ago & served this Cioppino. I sent DH to the store for a bottle of "decent" wine for the recipe. He returned with Cabernet Sauvignon. Everybody raved about the flavor & aroma plus there was none left so it must have been good. I doubled the recipe & used the entire bottle of wine knowing nobody around here would drink the small bit leftover. I don't know where I got the recipe...it may be from somebody here??? Anyway, if you want to prepare a 'feast'...this stuff is great! CIOPPINO Â¼ Cup Olive Oil 2 Onions, Chopped Small 4 Cloves Garlic, Minced 2 Tablespoons Tomato Paste 1 Teaspoon Oregano 1-1/2 Teaspoons Salt 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper 1 Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes 1-1/2 Cups Good Quality Red Wine (Trinchero Family Cabernet Sauvignon) 1 Cup Chicken Broth 1 Cup Fish Stock 1 28 Ounce Can of Whole Plum Tomatoes, juice reserved 12 Clams (Quahogs) Â¾ Pound Shrimp, Peeled, De-veined but with the tail left on 1 Pound Sea Scallops 1-1/2 Pounds Alaskan King Crab, in shell & Cut into 2"-3" Pieces 1 Pound Snapper, Cut Into 2" Pieces Basil, One Good-Sized Bunch, cut into a Chiffinade Lemon Slices, Garnish In the olive oil, sautÃ© the onions with the oregano, salt, pepper, & red pepper flakes for about 5 minutes or until onions are nicely wilted. Add garlic & sautÃ© another minute. Then, stir in the tomato paste. Add the red wine & simmer until reduced by about half (about 5-7 minutes over medium heat). Add the chicken broth, fish stock, & tomatoes plus the reserved juices. Crush the tomatoes with a wooden spoon. Simmer for 30 minutes. After simmering, the broth may be refrigerated & reheated to continue finishing the dish & cooking the seafood. Bring the broth to a strong simmer & add the crab and clams. Cover & cook for 5-10 minutes. After 5 minutes start checking to see if the clams have opened. Discard any clams that haven't opened after 10 minutes. After 10 minutes of simmering, remove the clams & crab with a slotted spoon to a bowl. Put the shrimp, scallops, & snapper into the broth, cover & simmer for about 5 minutes. I agree with others that a different paint color would help. If you're going to put in a backsplash, get rid of the 4" tall one of granite that's there and put in one that goes from th counter clear up to the cabinets. Then the granite color/pattern won't be so much "in your face". We re-did a kitchen in a rental condo and and the guy who put in the granite installed a 4" backsplash. We hated it on first sight, and I think it was because the granite pattern became overwhelming for the space. We ripped it out immediately and installed a tile 6" high backsplash with a mosaic border on top. We didn't want to do tile all the way up to the cabinets. I apologize for my less than stellar mock up skills, but it may give you an idea.

Sounds as though everything should be repainted---in their finishing room. NOT on site! But, you have very tricky navigating ahead, as you signed off on a paint sample. If your current cabs don't match the chip, then of course they should repaint on their nickel, but if they do match the approved sample, even if you were rushed on that approval, then I'm afraid you don't have any room for negotiation and may need to pay for a repaint yourself.

I'm curious as to if you already had a paint color that you liked, why they didn't just use that paint rather than color matching? Color matching works great---if you have someone on the tinter who has a lot of experience. I color match as a matter of course with most of my designs rather than using an existing chip, but I know how to get the best match from the spectrometer even if the expert paint guy isn't there to help me.

I had the same question as GD about using a color you already had. And have you used Opaline before? If so, does it have a green undertone?

This really sucks, to put it plainly, after waiting, planning, and paying extra for a color match. I wish I had some good advice as to how to handle it. All I can say is don't settle for the cabs as they are if you're as unhappy as you sound. It will bother you for as long as you live in that house.

I agree about getting it changed. Every time you walk into the kitchen you will see green.

GreenDesigns - The color sample appears to be a yellowish cream that is mid-way between my trim color and the cabinet color. I knew it wasn't a perfect match but I did think I could live with it as it wasn't too different than my actual paint. I have no idea why the cabinet manufacturer didn't just use BM paint but they charged me $490 for the color match.

breezygirl - All of my trim, there's a ton of it, is painted with Opaline. It goes well with most colors and looks quite neutral. It usually appears to be a warm white/cream but sometimes looks slightly yellowish. Next to my cabinets it looks white with a pinkish-gray cast. My cabinets look yellow with a greenish cast most of the time. Sometimes they just look quite yellow.

blflenton - I think you and breezygirl are right - if I don't change these, it will drive me nuts or cost me a fortune in paint and furniture. I spoke with the owner of the cabinet showroom this morning. He's a really nice guy who sees the problem but isn't sure how to fix it (in a way that doesn't involve his money, I suppose). He's going to talk to the manufacturer and try to work out a resolution.

The only upside to this problem is that I have lost three pounds in the last two weeks. So stressful!

I forgot to mention that, on their own, the cabinet color looks okay. They are yellower than I would like (not so neutral) but are otherwise attractive. If this was a new house and I was starting from scratch, they would be fine.
