Hi Capegirl,

I read your post last night about your experience finishing your counter top. I also posted a follow up explaining my similar experience with the satin WL. I have a quick question for you. It sounds like you decided to go with the original WL for your final coat. That is what I'm thinking about doing because I've had so much trouble with the satin. My question is- Now that you've lived with it for a while, are you happy with the more shiney finish of the original? I really wanted the "soft glow" of the satin, but am afraid to go there again! lol!

jillandmat, What kind of problems are you having with the Waterlox satin? We hand finished a wide plank pine floor and absolutely love the satin finish. Did you use a lambswool applicator?

jillandmatt, just found capegirls post. We bought our waterlox from a woodworking store and received instructions from them as to application. We applied 3 coats of the original sealer. First coat was brushed on with no sanding. Second two coats were applied with a brush and sanded in between. Be sure to use a tack cloth to take off all the dust. Third coat was applied using a lambswool applicator (tack cloth at this stage is very important). We poured the satin WL in a paint tray and dipped in the applicator (the applicator is fairly thick and wide, it is not cloth like) We then held the applicator with 2 hands and pulled it forward very slowly and did not go back over it (this is key). We are DIYers and have been for many years. We did several rooms and were very nervous that it would come out looking very DIY (not in a good way). We were shocked at how professional it looked, in fact I don't think we could have paid someone to do it any better which for a DIYer is a wonderful thing. I have attached some pictures. If you want some closeups let me know. Can you practice this method on another piece of wood?

While I do not need to answer the OP's question, since she said that she purchased a "shopvac" in another thread, I can explain what you asked about Albert_135. Shop vacuums are not made to use water as a filter for the air. A vacuum cleaner like Rexair's Rainbow, is made to trap alot of the "wettable" dirt in the water and let the air escape the vacuum cleaner. The intake inlet is located close to the water, where the dirt can touch the water. The churning water also helps to trap the dirt. There is also a spinning separator which blocks more of the dirt from escaping. There are also exhaust filters to trap anything that has escaped the vacuum cleaner. Wettable dirt is that which will stick to the water. Such things as plaster, cornstarch, ash and talcum powder are some things that just bounce off the water. There are other brands that use baffles and filters, but they do not seem to do as well as vacuums that use a "separator". With shop vacuums, the hose intake would be farther from the water. The dirt would enter the vacuum and swirl around and attach to the filter or drop to the bottom. The bottom line is that the water would not work.

DH was there for our install, and it was a good thing. After inspecting it, he found an area that needed to be leveled a little better, and it was fixed before the adhesive could set up. Otherwise, we would have had to live with it. We did not have a GC, but worked directly with the fabricator, so one of us had to be there anyway. We had purchased the stone separately, so we really needed to have it done properly the first time. There was no more material available. DH also wanted to make sure they had no mishaps with the newly refinished cabinets. We did meet with the fabricator when he was templating the slabs as there were some areas of the stone that we preferred to not have featured in a prominent location. He was able to eliminate those areas entirely from the finished counters. We had also discussed our concerns with the fabricator before templating, so there was a good feeling that we were all on the same page as far as our expectations went. OTOH, if you and your GC are on the same page quality-wise, and you're not using a rare or extremely expensive stone, having him take care of it might be the way to go for you. Personally, I wanted one of us there regardless to make sure everything went OK.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I, too, have wondered about dust getting into a cabinet that had chicken wire. But I guess, as Allison said, if you were in that cabinet frequently, getting plates, glasses, etc., dust may not build up. By the way, Allison, I've seen your kitchen before and I never tire of looking at it. It's gorgeous! I'm wondering if any cabinet manufacturer might make doors that have glass and then the chicken wire behind the glass so that you get the look, but don't have to worry about dust. So it sounds like F&P are still basically the only show in town as far as dish drawers. I remember seeing them when they first came out years ago, and liking them. I was thinking that maybe other companies had wandered into that territory by now, but as the one poster said Kitchenaid's dish drawers are still basically F&P, so I will likely just go with a single F&P if I do a full remodel. Any advice on which brands of wine fridges are the best?

Oh my goodness! I LOVE your kitchen!!! Thank you so much for the advice. I had not heard of using a lambswool applicator. It was very confusing because the paint store said to use a lintless cloth, Craft Art said a bristle brush and WL said a natural paint brush... I think I am going to try a satin/original mix again. I just don't like the shiney finish of the original as much. I will check out the lambswool applicator. How did you avoid marks where you picked up the applicator to redip in the paint tray???
