Local cabinetmaker recommendations for Portland, Maine area???

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for me? I am helping a friend with her new kitchen and she's getting frustrated trying to find the right cabinets. She's on a budget, but we looked at Ikea and she's not in love. Looked at the semi-custom cabinets I got for my own recent reno from a small distributor, but they're a little too expensive. Now she's considering the big box lines like Kraftmaid and American Woodmark and Shuler. But we'd really prefer to hire a local guy if the pricing is comparable.

However, I had a fairly bad experience hiring a local cabinetmaker for our bathroom vanity. He seemed great and knowledgeable and had a good portfolio, but he didn't do a great job. So I'm leery of just picking a name out of the phone book. If anyone has a any personal recommendations I would appreciate it!

No big, fancy, expensive companies that do Kennebunkport oceanside kitchens, though, please :)

Good Portland-area security company?

I am trying to find a reputable company that can advise me on security for my house, including the best way to secure french doors with pocket doors. The local locksmith is not familiar with some of the more advanced options for the french doors (like mortice rack bolts). They just want to stick an ugly deadbolt on the pocket doors. Chown Security no longer does residential work. The Door Company does not follow up on calls to them. An experienced locksmith who used to work for chown and is now a freelancer does not reply to emails, and does not follow up on phone calls. Is there a company that folks would recommend? Try suttondesign.com. My contractor works with them .. they've done amazing work in Chevy Chase and Old Town, I believe. I've seen pics of my contractor's work .. I'd recommend that you contact them for referrals, esp. for specialty work like this! Good luck!

I'm a bit south of Utica. http://www.knottybynature.com This place did custom cabinets for a friend's kitchen in a new construction house. They have an excellent reputation locally. I grew up in the little one stop light town (literally!) this place is in, though I don't know the owner. Also, I couldn't find a website, but my husband used to work for Kershaw-Zelewski in Utica (315-724-3619--I still have a pile of their pencils in my pen holder here at my desk LOL) about 8 years ago and at the time they had a custom cabinet shop. My husband worked as a carpenter in the remodeling end so I don't know much about the cabinet shop because they were kind of run as two separate divisions. I can tell you my husband learned how to do immaculate finish carpentry during his years there because they had exceptional standards.

I just want to say....I miss Portland. We live in Florida now, but Portland/Falmouth was a great place to raise our family.
Good luck with the kitchen. I remember that there were several great cabinet places in the Portland area--which, IMHO, might be a better option than the big box stores.

Thanks, twosit.. You're so right... I lived a lot of other places but this was definitely where I wanted to raise my family! Do you recall the names/locations of the cabinet places?
I live in Cumberland Foreside, right next to Falmouth. I got my cabinets at Indisco on Rte One in Scarborough, and am happy with them. My friend's new house -that I am helping her do a kitchen for- in in Cape Elizabeth. We priced a local builder and the Indisco cabs, but she is looking for something a little less pricey.
