Do you think I mite have a problem?
Comments (1)It's hard to say without more information. It's normal to see dead bees and some mites on the bottom this time of year but it really doesn't tell you much. Normally natural mite fall is measured over a specific period of time (24 hours, 48 hours). If you know know how many mites fell in a given period of time it would tell you more (and would even be better if you had a bit of history. ie. last month you counted 10 mites in 24 hours, before treatment it was 100 in 24 hours, etc.) Without testing (natrual drop, sugar rolls, etc.) before and after treatment you can't really be sure the treatment worked. Apistan may have had little effect (there is widespread resistance to it) though the combination may have worked. Unfortunately there is little you can do right now (unless you live in the south) as most of the reatments require warmer temperatures. I would plan on monitoring the mite fall and plan on treatment in the spring if necessary. -Tim...See MoreHelp! Brand new palm and i think it has problems!
Comments (12)However this morning I did notice a new spike coming up that hasn't yet unfurled into a frond and that has black spots on it too (though no white powder). Other things to know about me. I am currently living and working in Shanghai, China. The weather here is very, very hot at the moment and humidity is on the high side. I have put this palm in our living room which faces east. It gets the sun until about 9am, but I thought near the windows would be good for the breeze. I do have an outdoor balcony (it faces south but is shaded by the upstairs apartments and never gets full sun), so if it turns out that it needs to go outside for a while then that is possible. All help with this is appreciated. Thanks for reading this. KylieB...See MorePlease help ID leaf problem...I think it's spreading
Comments (2)Those plants look healthy, and it's normal to lose a few leaves after a repot. Look up plant edema and see if you think that may be going on. I use a chunky mix also but still get that on some leaves periodically. Fluctuations in temp outside are impossible to control, and a lot of them are out where they get rained on. I remove those leaves and don't become alarmed unless leaves are being lost at a rapid rate (or there just aren't many to spare to begin with.)...See MoreDo you think high budget can lead to more problems?
Comments (10)Ok, a more serious response from me. I think anything that is more rare or more specialized means that yes, the potential for problem is greater. Some examples: that amazing fancy huge geode slice that you're using for a counter is something that your average fabricator is unfamiliar with (and it's something that even the $$$ specialized fabricator sees infrequently), your highend high BTU range requires a different gas set up and a dedicated outlet (despite the fact that the only electrical parts are the light and fan) and your GC has installed a zillion ranges, doesn't need to know this info, disregards the instructions and the gas line is in the wrong place; your european faucet renders your home warranty guarantee on water pressure void because it uses non-standard fittings, etc. Most of these have actually happened to me (no, I don't have a geode countertop!) so I do think that the non-run of the mill items that we choose (which can tend to be expensive and rare) can cause more headaches. People just tend to have less experience with these materials and sometimes these rarer and more expensive items are such because of their difficulty to install, come by, etc. I think ways to counteract these possible pitfalls are to be as knowledgeable as possible by reading and researching, to be on top of your contractors and choose them based on their reputation checking references and using yelp, angie's list, etc. (esp. if acting as your own GC), to communicate that you want to be involved in decision making, to make sure you understand your contracts and to have money set aside for when such issues arise. (And maybe also realize that there will be compromises, that your favorite item might be discontinued, that people are human and make mistakes and that your newly sprouted gray hairs make you look more distinguished!)
