Let's Talk Trash!! Part 2

Has anyone tried the infrared trash cans by Simple Human, Itouchless, or Ninestars? If so, would you buy one again? Why or why not?

I have a small kitchen and cannot sacrifice storage in the base cabinets, to have a trash pull out. These trash cans that open without you touching the can seem cool, but only if they really work.

I would not buy a trash can that relied either on batteries or electric to get it open.

Why not one of the 'step' trashcans? I've had just the 'cheapie' plastic ones and they really work well and last a long time.

We got one a few years ago as a gift from the in-laws and I loved it! I believe it was the Simple Human. Passed it on to my brother since the reno (its too nice to use in the garage). One thing to note is the it can't be used under an overhang (under a counter) because the sensor on top will keep activating. Batteries lasted about 6-8 months for our family of two adults/1 teen.

~~~~~~~CONGRATULATIONS MARY JANE~~~~~~~~~ Wow, lots of action this morning. I checked in very quickly earlier but had to leave. Then when I come back I see that there was a party going on. LMAO Lots of posts in a short time. And Mary Jane is our Bingo Queen. I needed 3 more words last night....and today...I still need 3 words. LOL What a whirlwind of fun this has been. This is what I did. We have a rather convoluted compost system. Even though I saw Servo drive in action, I did not install the servo drive because I did not trust the reliability over the long run )(10 plus years). I thought that if it starts to get finicky then I would have to spend alot of money to replace the sensors and motors. I have learned over the years that mechanical things generally do not outlive my needs... There are two buckets in the left drawer which is 18 inches wide. The front one contains a smaller garbage bin with a chrome rack that holds liners underneath. The rear one holds a larger recycle bin. I actually wanted the type of recycle drawer that had a bottom to the drawer rather than the type that you drop the bins from the top. The Reason was because I could use the bottom for storage by lifting up the bin by putting a rack. This is a perfect place to store the garbage liners. Since then, I have decided not to use plastic liners for environmental reasons and use the paper grocery bags to line the garbage. I have very tiny small amount of wet garbage so it has not been an issue. I have two compost bins under the sink. One is marked CITY and the other is HOUSE. The city one gets the compost that goes into the city: food scraps, cooked food, meats, bread etc. Our city gets everything. For example, when I make chicken stock, what I throw out after I strain goes into the CITY compost. I line them with the biodegradable bags so it is easier to dispose. HOUSE gets uncooked vegie peels and fruit peels only. I often work with the compost bins on the counter or in the sink. My Sea Pearl had bluish tones that turned greenish once in my home. Will they give you a sample? My stoneyard did not so I took a chance. Did you see the chart Karin_MT made up? Maybe you could go by her description of the various levels of quartzite. Will they let you do a water absorption test? The crystalline quartzite is easy to spot. Look at the names on the right, find one in your stoneyard and look for the grains, cross bedding, crystalline structure to see which one comes closest to looking like your stone. You might try either lemon juice or vinegar on a small paper towel in a zipper bag or maybe you could use an extra small empty hand sanitizer bottle. Don't ask...don't tell??? Don't forget to test it in different spots on the stone, not just one spot. Same with the glass test...use different spots. I think they look pretty normal considering the time of year and they’ve just been shipped. Mine look about the same, like crap;). They’re all in the process of absorbing the old leaves for the new. If you very lightly squeeze each body you should be able to feel the new bodies underneath. If they were mine I would put in a window that gets good morning or afternoon sun and leave them be. Don’t let them get cooked if the window is too warm. Once their old leaves have dried out you can give water. Idk if this is right, but this is what I would do:). Once the dog days of summer come you can let them sleep if you want, but I’ve read on Llifle that C. bilobum if given a little bit of water during the summer they will continue to grow. They warn if given too much water the epidermis will break and cause not so pretty scars, but that goes with most succulents. Your question had me thinking why are Conophytums so hard to read and figure out. I think it has everything to do with how they do everything underneath the old leave set of leaves. Other mesembs will look like crap, but we can see the new growth. So we know everything is ok. But many Conos stay hidden until the outer leaves are completely absorbed. So they look like crap without us seeing the new growth. We went through 2 or 3 of those in our last house and they never lasted long. We had 2 young boys, but I am not sure that they were the reason or the infrared parts were just delicate.
We got a metal step kind at Walmart a few years ago and love it. It was much cheaper and never breaks. It is even nicer looking than the others that were ss and black and looked dark. This one is white and has a stainless top. Its opening is also larger than the infrared kind, which has been a real benefit. I think I paid $30 for it....

I have a 22 gal Ninestars and love it. Looks great.
However, I just push the button that keeps it open a lot
of the time because DH was always opening it accidentally
and it scares the dog haha
Figured when it's just the two of us here it doesn't have
to be closed all of the time. I bought it mainly because
I like a large trash can and wanted a SS one. Bought it
online from Sams Club and shipping was included.

Thank you for the replies! I know it sounds silly to spend that kind of $ on a trash can, but I want one. I hope it does not die, but before I order it, I'll go to Wally World and Target Boutique to see what is available in the step trash can category.

We have two and love them. Got them at SAMs or Costco for around $59. They have both lasted 3 years and still going. Only bad thing is risk a guest will break the opening mechanism because try to manually open it too often. And you will open it if you walk too close to it. That's an issue in my current kitchen, so I am going with an In-cabinet trash can and putting these in the garage.
