Sneak Peak Vanity and Laundry Cabinets
Comments (21)Azmom, My Woodharbor kitchen cabinets are inset cherry cabinets that have been in for 2.5 years and are doing great. Woodharbor makes a frameless I believe but I went with the other company SJM, that is also an Iowa company and that is carried by the local shop that sold me my Woodharbor cabinets. The ironing board pull out in the style I have requires at least a 14" width I believe, and something like 21" depth. It will be clearly marked on the spec sheet. Mine only unfolds and does not swivel. There is another model that is offered that swivels but it requires a lot more width, but not as much depth to the cabinet. In my space I couldn't use the swivel because of my width constraints. My ironing board is a Rev-a-Shelf. Hafele sells the same types, with similar specs. I think the prices are similar too. My only complaint with my cabinets is that the person doing the drawings and handing off to the cabinet maker made three critical errors. One, the grain pattern went the wrong way. I could have had this remade but chose to not do this. Second, the width for the right side of my laundry space was to be designed to accommodate my wall tile to butt up against the filler. But in reality it came without that ability. I clearly wanted enough filler to run my tile into the cabinets and have room for the doors. My EXCELLENT carpenter shifted everything over with his skills, put in a filler to give me room for my wall tiles. The third, which was frustrating, is that the floor of the middle cabinet was to be the same height as the stacking platform between my W/D. This was so there would be room for my dryer vent to run straight out the side and above the counter height of the cabinet. I had sent the designer the measurement to clarify and she stated she "got it". Well the measurement didn't get to the cabinet I see. The carpenter did not think it would be a problem to modify to allow the dryer exhaust to be fitted. He just had to cut into the floor of that cabinet :/ I was disappointed. My free standing vanity turned out as requested, (except for the grain). Moral of the story, see the drawings and sign off on every detail as they change. Have the cabinet designer slowly tell you every detail while pointing it out on the drawing. Keep everything at a business level, don't become chummy (i.e don't discuss philosophy, children, or politics). These issues listed above were my down falls anyway....See MoreSneak peak at kitchen remodel!
Comments (22)Wow, thank you all for the kind comments! You all are the first to see it - it is encouraging to hear what you think! msrose, here are the specs of what's installed so far: Â Cabinets are custom, painted SW Divine White, then glazed with a custom mix. The stained cabinets are glazed as well. Â Counters are Kashmir Gold - we got the entire kitchen out of one slab!! Only paid $2500 for the entire counter project! :-) Â Floors are Mohawk Santa Barbara engineered - Light Amber Maple judydel, the window seat was custom, but I'm sure your idea of using regular bases and adding a top could work. On ours, the tops lift up for easy access to tons of storage. We are going to have a narrowish breakfast table there. As you can see in the previous kitchen, the peninsula took up lots of the dinette space. The island is an improvement, but still tight. I'm scouring CL for just the right size table... :-) I talked to my cabinet guy again about going after this crook. He said that in Texas, as of this year, contractors do not have to register. We used this guy because he was recommended to us by our architect. We went to a mansion close by us, and were very impressed with his work. The cabinet guy has worked with him for 15 years, never a problem. I guess he's hurting from the economic crunch, and decided to use us to bail himself out. What burns is that we were going to go with another very reputable cabinet company, but at the last minute, the KD said they wouldn't be able to get us in by Christmas, which was a big concern all along. We didn't want to start unless we could get in by Christmas. So, we went back to this guy, who said he would "jump through his a--" to get us in by the 23rd. Once he got his money, he was gone. We spent Christmas in a hotel with our four kiddos because the cabinets were painted Christmas eve and we were all getting high on the fumes. Then a few days later, our house guests came - are still here actually, and we still aren't in our kitchen. Very inconvenient to entertain without a kitchen. lol Thank God for a big laundry room! It can only get better from here, right? Thanks again guys! You made my day. I'll post more when it's finished. :-D...See MoreSneak Peak!!! Pics of Kitchen in progess
Comments (26)Thank you Gemini -- you are so kind! This kitchen has been a labor of love for my family and our home. We enjoy entertaining and I love to cook/bake. It has been a long time in the making and we really want to create a space that we can all enjoy. I greatly admire the wisdom, expertise and creativity of all GW members and perhaps I too will have something to offer to anyone seeking input. We are blessed with a great GC/KD, who is as we speak sharing some scotch with DH after a long day of work. He is one of the best craftsman I have ever had the privilege to work with and if anyone in the greater DC/Northern VA area is seeking someone truly special to take on a project, I've got the perfect person! The storage is truly amazing and I will fill it up quickly -- I have a lot of pieces! No doubt will shop for more!!! :)...See MoreIn Progress:Sneak Peak of our white to dark remodel
Comments (7)Awwww, Ginger, thank you. You are very sweet. I just re-posted because the original was MIA for a while. That was a lot of work. Let me see: The cabinets were ordered online through Cabinet Giant in Kansas City, I think. The are cherry stained maple, solid wood, dovetailed full-extension drawers with soft close. They are RTA which sounds scary, but I'll tell you, aside from the lazy susan and the pantries, each cabinet took around 7 minutes to put together. The color is Brindleton Maple- the Reserve Line. The counter top is Corian Dusk (light speckled gray) the integrated sink is white. The floor below froggy is Brazilian Cherry Natural- not wood, but Mannington Revolutions Diamond Bay laminate. Thank you again for your kind words! My apologies to everyone for the double post. If you can tell me how to get rid of one, I will!...See MoreUser
