Comments (26)@iroll: Your floor is great! Yeah, I can see that there are a lot of different colours in the tile. It seems to give it some depth. I really love the uniform look. Do you notice seams at all? So i *think* I've decided on thick stripes running across the width of the galley. I got a quote for the yellow and off white marmoleum ("natural corn" and "barbados"). @deedles: maybe the butter colour you mention is the "natural corn"? The yellow is a perfect yellow. Yes, expensive, but really lovely and more vibrant that the vinyl. My thought process around the use of stripes is that I can use the 3X1-foot pieces, which are less expensive than the 1X1s. @a2gemini: the marmoleum is cork-backed, I believe, but don't quote me on that. The dealer I talked to also recommended a cushy underpad for it, so it seems like it would be pretty easy on the back. My mother is telling me to get cork ;-)...See MoreBarker Cabinets: white oak and slab questions
Comments (3)I have Barker slab doors in hard white maple veneer and they are beautiful. I've sanded the doors but not finished them. Here's the thing. I expected there would be no seams in my doors, at least in part because the doors can only be 23" wide (unless you special order), and veneers come in wider widths. For two of the doors that was correct. For the other two, there were veneer seams that ran the length of the doors. My guess is that unless you have book matched seams (Barker doesn't offer this), you will end up with some of your doors having seams that are visible to you. Barker's seams are probably consistent with industry standards, and may be hard to detect when the doors are finished, but I see them in maple, and you will probably notice them even more in a door veneered with a stronger grain, like quarter sawn oak. Maybe you should ask them about it before you order....See Moreconsidering Slab door/drawers for kitchen cabinets. Any thoughts?
Comments (7)I don't understand why anybody thinks Design Dilemma isn't the right place to talk about finishes for a kitchen! :) We live for questions like that! I do think that GreenDesigns has nailed the issue, though -- what do you mean when you use the word "modern"? and I might add a question about what you mean by "taupe"! there are a lot of colors between white and black... Flat/slab cabinets can be pretty spiff in a range of contexts, but you do have to know what you're aiming for......See MoreMCM Kitchen Lighting Help!
