Rohl's Farm Sink - in stock vs. custom order

The local plumbing store said they have a few Rohl's farm sinks in stock because they are so popular. Should I just get one to have sooner vs. later or should I be wary that they were returned for some minor imperfection and I am getting a leftover one? I thought they were made to order.

Am I able to inspect the ones in stock and if so, what am I looking for in terms of ways to know it is a quality sink?

Can I request a left drain sink? I had asked about the 10% right drain and I was told that was due to human error or sometimes one side looks better than another and they try to make the better side "forward" facing and put the logo on the other side

It would depend on the price for me. I ordered mine online because it was much cheaper than the quote I got from the plumbing supply store, plus I got an ebates rebate. The sink looks perfect to me and has a certificate of authenticity.

I guess it depends on how soon you need it and how keen you are to save money.

Kitten, where did you get yours and how much was it? Did it include a casement? How about the flange for a garbage disposer.

We got the same type of quote for our kitchen. There is a $10K difference between custom and semi-custom. This was for an apples to apples comparison: same hinges, same thickness of plywood in bases, same number of drawers, same drawer slides. I think we'll go with the semi-custom. Stock cabinets come in sizes that are multiples of 3", 9", 12", 15"...60", etc. When your kitchen has an inch or two space, they have matching spacers that fill in those spaces and look like extensions on the cabinets. The factor I'm concerned about it the color of the stain. Most semi/custom stock will stain certain colors with or without glazes. If you want a certain stain color, they may not be as flexible as your custom cabinet guy. Another factor in durability is how long the shelf run is and how thick it is. Without good support, a long run will sag in the short term; a thinner shelf sags sooner. I will probably order a door from each before I make my decision. I ordered one door awhile back; when it got here, I realized the cherry wood the cabinet company was using wasn't top quality. A great installer with an eye for detail is what makes ordinary cabinets shine. My son just had a bottom of the line series installed. We had them put plywood in the bottom of the sink base instead of particle board. They look high end because they go to the ceiling, there is a nice crown molding up there, and he doesn't have low end knobs. They are just a builder grade cabinet with a dark stain over birch. They won't last as long, but he doesn't need them to. My builder cabinets I have now are 20yo and are just starting to show their wear. The funny thing is that my sister who is married to a contractor and have built their own houses with custom cabinets thought I had a custom job. No, I just had an installer who takes pride in his work, cabinets that went up to the ceiling, and plywood panels installed on unfinished sides. I guess my conclusion is that I'd go with the customized in-stock cabinets and save the $$$.

I bought a rohl shaw farmhouse sink in 2007. It looked nice for about 3 years. Then ts started getting stains from not draining right. Rohl said it wasn't installed right cause it wasnt level. It is totally level if you put a level with bubbles on the edge. A couple years later I noticed strange dark spots all over the bottom. Rohl said it's because I didn't buy the grate for trhe bottom of the sink and that I used too strong of cleaners. I have never used cleaners on my sink. Now I have those spots all over the edges and the front, they are small hunks where it dips in, little dimples. Rohl sent me a repair kit, it took me 2 hrs to fill in the hundred spots, most of the repair material fell back out. I did love this sink, it doesn't stain and is easy to wash big items and give babies baths in it. But it will not look nice for long.

NyefNyef By "called Blanco", I meant I telephoned Blanco's US HQ and asked them to find me their sink within a 200 mile radius of my home. They pointed me to their regional sales teams, who could not locate it readily available, or in their nat'l warehouse. They said most of the time, nobody really stocks them and they're all custom ordered. No matter. Amazon & FedEx came thru. cal Ditto! I'd love to FedEx them too. breezyThanks for answering my original question. My suspicion was that they weren't as good, just based on how often I see Blanco mentioned and never hear the other makers. And compared to what we've spent already on things, you're right that $100 is a small price to get exactly what we wanted exactly when we need it.

I have had my Herbeau for only 2 years A glass slipped from my hand (is heavy) it did not break but my sink got a huge quarter sized chip on the front apron at top...I looked into this sink and was told very durable. Yet when I called Herbeau and suddenly they tell me "oh yes they will chip, get scratches etc.. You need to replace it". My sink is in a custom built cabinet as the Amish made my cabinets, and the only way to get the sink out is to destroy and replace my granite. I am so upset and still trying to find a solution....with no help from Herbeau I now know. It is a white sink....I still need to read all the comments above and am hoping to find a solution. Just wanted to post so other people thinking of buying will know. I wish I had known, never would have bought (and I thought I did my homework, so did my friend who told me about it....she has scratches and chips now too)

I ordered mine online from Quality Bath. We had it delivered right to the cabinet maker. The price was good and the service excellent.

If the prices were equal I would much prefer getting the sink in person. To the best of my knowledge Rohl (Shaw's) farm sinks are not made to order at the customer level they may be made to order on the retailer level but I am not sure. These sinks are hand made so seeing your actual sink in person can be advantageous. You can check that your sink is square, you can check drainage pitch using the marble test and you can look for any of the handmade imperfections that may have passed Rohl's review process but not yours. With that said none of the retailers in 75 mile radius of us came close to the price we got online at Vintage Tub and Bath, www.vintagetub.com. We had a very good purchasing experience with them and they will match the prices of other retailers.

Thank you! That is very informative. I am concerned about price but not to the point where I want it to interfere with quality. I am especially concerned with quality since each hand made sink varies. That is an interesting point about getting a marble or small ball and seeing if it rolls to the drain! Given the cost of the sink, I would go plus or minus 10% for better quality and service. I wonder if that local plumbing store would match the online prices. I will give it a shot

No problem at all, I am glad I could help. For an additional point of reference, we could not find another authorized retailer in our area that was within 25% percent of what we paid from an online retailer. From a video I watched Rohl does appear to have thorough quality control measures in place but the sinks are handmade and stuff happens. Also most of the retailers in our area do not stock these sinks they have a sample and then the item needs to be ordered. If the retailer you are dealing with has first quality stock and will meet the online retailers price that is a win win.
