Here is the picture of my kitchen in the house we just moved out of . The contractor did it this way. Did not quite go all the up to ceiling and and electricians vented it out the back of this through wall and up and out of roof.

That's very helpful.
But do you mean that the top moulding on that chimney is just kind of "floating" beneath the crown on the wall? That seems like an odd way to have it installed.

Here is my hood. Double vents out the back - Imperial Range Hood insert:

Here is mine. All upper cabinets are 15" deep. About half of the cabinet above the hood houses the exhaust. The vent is a custom-built ModernAire, and the look is exactly what I wanted--minimally intrusive in such a large hood.

BTW, you can see in this pic how successful I was at keeping litter off my countertop--NOT!!

How high are your ceilings? Mine are 12 foot and the hood design process was miserable until I realized that I could vent through the back because the room behind it has a shorter ceiling.
If I were building, I am sure I would lower my ceilings in the kitchen so cabinets could go all the way up - I think 10ft would be ideal.

Yes It had to stop just below the crown for a reason but it has been so many years I can not remember why now. I think it was a venting out issue of where they could take it up and then bend to go out and up but I am not sure that was it . Did not look to odd though it was right up to the crown but a bit away from it not flush with the wall . Like the picture in Bellsmoms it is dropped below too and does not go all the way up to the ceiling. Either way would be right though I believe.
