Yes you can. I used Aqua-mix grout colorant and sealer-you can order it online and they have a pretty wide variety of colors. You just apply it (small stiff brush is best), let dry about 2 hours. I used a scotch brite pad to scrub it off the tile, comes off pretty easy. I used it in my shower to change the dingy off white grout to white. That was about a year ago and it has held up perfectly. If your grout color really bothers you, go for it, it's almost fun to do! I believe it's supposed to hold up for about 15 years, probably would last longer on your backsplash.

mycatz, does it matter what the color was before? I have recently had to replace broken tile and the new grout doesn't match the old. Does this go on like stain & the underneath color will affect the top color?

The website is www.aqua-mix.com They have a sample of colors on the website but I had also picked one up at a tile store, which gives you a better idea. It does cover just like paint (only the grout, not the tile) and acts as a sealer as well.

marti8a-- Unfortunately, I'm on the road right now, and not using my own laptop, so I can[t post the link. But if you do a search on this forum or the bathrooms forum on grout colorant, I've posted the link where you can buy the colorant so many times that I'm sure you'll find it atleast a time or two. :-)

I used the grout colorant on my kitchen floor. It took a while but wasn't hard to do. I used an old toothbrush. Love the clean look. Since then I've had a few spills and they do wipe right up since it sealed the grout too.

I've changed grout color three times in my life. Once, literally drilled out black grout. Uggh. Never again. The second time we were in Korea and the oily soot from the oil heat was in the grout in all the tile. It would not come clean even wtih muriatic acid. SO.... I cleaned it as good as I could then carefully painted all grout lines with primer and then with oil based paint. It looked perfect even when we left. Everyone marveled at how clean our house looked compared to theirs.

And lastly, my kitchen was as yours. I put a page up online to show how I darkened the the grout and since I've done it, I've sealed it and it's wonderful.

Changing the color is easy ... cleaning up after wards may be the PITA, especially with a tiny 1/16 grout lines.

Home depot sells a grout colorant in a tube with a tiny wheel at the end. It rolls perfectly inside 1/4 inch grout lines and I used it with great results last year to change a white grout to gray with minimal fuss. I don't know if they or someone else makes a small version. If you can find that,it would make application much easier. Otherwise you will be spending lots of time with a tiny brush; it's not hard to do, just time consuming.

I went back to the house the next day after I posted this and the grout had dried a much lighter color than the beige it looked like when it was wet. I didn't mind it nearly as much and liked the way it looked, despite the mistake. I know I would have liked the grey grout just as much, if not maybe a little better. But at this stage in the building process, I'm ready to throw in the towel with certain battles and this may be one of them I at least put on hold until we're in and I live with it awhile.

I posted a pic of my kitchen and would love any feedback--does it look too "homogenous" or can you tell there are individual tiles back there?!
