Help choose between 2 granites

I'm deciding between granites for our dog room. What do you think?

Granite Choices:

Tropic brown:

Kasmir White:

Here is the room. A grooming tub is going on the far left. The granite will be on top of the desk area and the far right, next to the fridge cubby.

The chandelier:

To me the Tropic Brown reads as a 'beagle coloured' (black, tan and white) stone. Plllog said it, but that was exactly the first thing that popped up in my head when i saw that picture :-). My choice would be Absolute Black, to confuse you even more ;-)

    HTH, Petra

I agree with Petra that the TB reads as beagle colored. But I vote no on the TB because I just don't like that stone and because it's too pedestrian, IMHO, for the custom home you're creating. I like KW as a granite, but not for your space with that wall color. It doesn't seem grounding to the room. I also think AB would work. The other special touches of the room would be highlighted better.

Your floor choice is really nice, very neutral. No, my hardwood floor does not have a cherry tone to it. It really is more like a deep brown. it's by Shaw and is called Hazelnut. Even though my island and peninsula is made from cherry the color is called "saddle" and it's also in the brown family color. It's alittle lighter than the floor. I was really torn between using a tile like yours our going with hardwood. But, I went with the hardwood because it blended with the rest of the house better. So far, you have done a great job with your choices - go w/your gut. If you love that Mascarello which I think the tones go very nice with your cabs & floor - go for it...

If a realtor is any good and working with a buyer who is willing to go to $300K, their searches should include homes to at least $310K unless the market is tending to go at full list or above. I would go with the one that I felt most comfortable working with and who I thought had the best plan for marketing the house. The woman's enthusiasm for the home may more than make up for less than $4k difference in price. Also, can you talk to anyone who has used the agents? The gushy ones sometimes lose their charm after they get the business -- in any business. How is she at getting offers and closing deals? We have an agent in our area who is known for listing high. Some of the houses sell well (perhaps with buyers who are not afraid to offer what they think the house is worth and work it or walk), but we've watched many of them sit -- often through one or more price reductions. There is one on my street now that is on at least it's second reduction. Doesn't help that the listing photos have the most bizarre lighting and give the home a strange feel --- and the staging is odd. Like I said, consider the marketing -- look at their other listings, photos, ads, listen to what they can do to market your home, consider their network (probably both good on that last point) -- and who would you rather be working with to negotiate on your behalf. You posted while I was typing -- good luck

You need new lighting before anything. Get LEDS in daylight color so anything from 3500 - 5000 k will make your colors look the same at night as they do in the daylight. Your yellow cast lighting is waht is wrong.

I would ask for a sample of the stone. Test it with lemon, oil, ketchup / tomatoes, wine, etc. See what really stains it. You honestly should not need a crazy expensive sealer and I agree that I would not want something that provides a thick coating. A basic natural stone sealer should do the trick. You can do it yourself, takes about an hour, most of which is just drying time between applications. Wipe up any drips or spills as quickly as possible and your stone should be just fine.

Jamie and Mr. Jennings agree with me; voting for the white.

At first, I was sure I liked the white. But now I'm thinking go with the brown as it will most likely unify the space. It's so hard to tell w/o seeing a sample in the room.
Your Beagles are too cute. We have been considering that breed, as we would like a smaller dog for a change. Both of our Dalmations have passed and I do miss them.

I really agree with palimpsest , I don't think either are right if you are sticking with that wall color. I love Kashmir White, and that would have been my choice, but I don't think it will play well with those walls, floors and cabs. I think either the white or black would be a better choice.

    Jackson votes for the white.

Love all the dog pics!!! Beagles, have you ever seen Giallo Ornamental? It has some creamy golden tones that might work with the blue walls...and it has some brown that could work with the cabinets. Love the room! The chandy is priceless too!

Majra! We have a Cavalier too! Wish I could post his pic! He looks like your pup on the left in the picture! He is my baby! :0) Your dogs are precious!

    Capegirl

Hi my choice is the Kasmir White of the 2 you have shown. I also like the idea of the absolute black, which IMHO would go better with the wall colour. BTW - which sink are you using for your dog washing? Thanks

Another vote for Kashmir White--shows less dust & dog hair :-)

I love all the puppy pics!

I never really thought about the tropical brown being beagle colored, but I guess it is. We'll look at Absolute Black too. The chandelier came w/ really cute little black shades so AB would match those well too. Capegirl, we'll look at the giallo ornamental in real life too. I like the pictures of it online a lot. I'm sorry to hear about your granite troubles on the other thread.

paintergirl94, I LOVE my beagles and would never have any other breed. They are a handful though. Bailey is four and a half and he still chews blankets, pillows and the occasional chair cushion no matter what I do. He also howls like a nut every time he sees another dog that is on a leash (we tried citronella collars, ultrasonic colors, positive reinforcement w/ treats, and nothing worked). Beagles are stubborn. Lovable, cuddly (I have two of them right now, completely under the covers, each one using my legs as a pillow!) and entertaining too though and worth any amount of chewed blankets and chairs!!

sjmitch the tub is from Groomer's Best. We did a custom order and got a tub with no legs so it could be mounted on cabinets. We also had the front color coated by the company and the tub is being set a little bit back in the wall and then a cement board is going over the back so the back can be tiled with the dog pics. I really wanted a shower tiled with pictures of the dogs but we also really wanted the removable door so they could enter/exit the tub after their bath. The grooming tub was $870.00 + $100 shipped and to have our tile person create something similar from scratch would have been around $2000 (plus our tile layer is inept, but we didn't know that until recently!)

Here is the tub, untiled. Removable door is not shown in this picture, but it lifts up and down in the open space:

Vote: Kashmir White, of the two choices... I don't like the other granite very much.

I agree that a black granite would look very nice in the room and definitely match.

Where are the built-in dog kennels you mentioned on another thread? :)

When I was a kid, I'd help my mother with her dog grooming business. I'd get in the shower with the dog and wash them that way with a hand sprayer. I'd get as wet as the dog after they inevitably shook off, but it got the job done, lol.....

I was just voting for myself above. My beagle Sammy votes for the kasmir white too!

Paintergirl, I agree that beagles are a handful. Very affectionate, loveable dogs, highly energetic and stubborn.

I don't like AB as a choice....I think you need something with tans/browns to tie in cabs and floor. Maybe something a bit lighter for some contrast. Of these two I still vote for KW....TB is boring IMHO...if you're unsure about KW.... keep shopping!

The more I analyze this Beagles, ---I just don't think that shade of blue works with the floor at all. Sorry. I think the brown granite goes with the tile floor, and the reason that I didn't pick that, is because I didn't like it with the wall color...which by extension implicates the tile as not working with the wall color.

I'll shut up now, but in my mind that is the real problem, not the granite choices.

lolauren after thinking about the best way to achieve what we needed, which is a place for them to eat raw meat when they can't eat outside, we decided the best thing to do was use the wire crates w/ the metal floors. So, we had the cubbies built so that the crates will slide right under the benches and fit perfectly w/ doors opening to the side. Not quite built in, but a built in space for them :)

dianalo I wash the pups in the shower in my house now b/c we have no grooming tub :) In the new house, we put in a pebble tile floor and a fancier shower and we didn't really think it would be a good idea to have disgruntled pups in there all the time (bath time is not a favorite in our house) . Since we live in a woodsy area we figured they'd be getting dirty a fair amount and we wanted someplace right off the door that was dedicated to cleaning them. Plus, we wanted a way to dry them off easily w/o them drying themselves on our bed which is what happens when I let them out of the shower now, so we have a wall mounted dryer planned that we can use while they are in the tub.

We'll keep an open mind on our next visit to the granite place and see if anything comes across as perfect.

I see your point Pal, but we really can't change the paint color in another room. We regret hiring the designer who helped us w/ these colors, but we actually like this blue and it matches the other blue in the halls and flows well, so it is what it is. Maybe we'll find a different granite that ties everything perfectly together :)

OMG! What a great thread. Love the dogs -- and the kitty. AND the Beagle tiles and knobs. Too good all around.

What about a blue granite to pick up the wall color? Blue Pearl may not be the swankiest, and it can be dark, but it wears like iron. (Please excuse the amateurish PowerPoint attempts.)

    From GardenWeb Photos

On the other hand, what about Labrador Antique? It might do a good job of coordinating with both the wall and floor colors. AND it's Labrador Antique! (I do know that's not the referent for the name, but .....)

    From GardenWeb Photos

Finally, Paintergirl94: though we've always had Beagles, at one time we also had a Dalmatian. He was deaf, but such a wonderful dog. Your picture brought tears to my eyes. I'm sorry for your loss.

I do agree that the blue paint doesn't do the room any favors. But if you are set on it, then I absolutely agree with Kashmi that Labrador Antique would pull it all together. Or Volga Blue is quite lovely as well.

I like Kashmir White. I don't like the blue paint, either. I used to have dogs - a Siberian Husky (can you say Shed?) and a stray Heinz 57 that my son brought home when he was about 4. No dogs now, I am past that stage of life. Dogs are a lot of responsibility and I am tired of being responsible!

kashmi thanks so much for putting the counters into the room in the picture! I like the Labrador Antique. I like Volga Blue but if I remember right, that's an exotic granite and we're trying not to go super overboard in cost here. Is Labrador Antique also an exotic? Blue Pearl might work and I don't think that's a super costly one.

I guess we should take our paint sample and a sample of the wood cabinets back to the granite yard and explore other options.

Beagles, you're right. Blue Pearl isn't terribly expensive, but Labrador Antique can be pricey. However, if you only need some for those two spaces, you don't need a full slab. A fabricator will probably have (or be able to find) remnants at a more reasonable rate.

Ok, I see where you're putting your crates now. :) It is probably good as you have much more flexible space for them. We designed a similar open space (under a countertop) to put a dog crate for one dog that likes to be in her den. :) Love the idea. I also love how the labrador granite looks in the above photo.

Sundae likes the bluish ones that kashmi posted.

Beagles, I know they are a handful. A friend of mine has three. But, dalmations are highly energetic and a bit crazy, too. Of all the breeds we look at, we keep coming back to beagles and jack russells. Or maybe a greyhound. Anyway, I can't seem to resist a beagle!!
And Kashmi, Mannie lived 16 amazing years. He loved to sit in the canoe and row around the lake. Neither of our dalies were deaf/blind, but had other problems common w/that breed.
Anyway Beagles, look forward to seeing what granite you pick.

It sounds like Mannie had a wonderful life and was a wonderful dog! And I think you absolutely positively should get a beagle. Soon. And then post adorable beagle puppy pictures. Please :)

bahacca, Sundae is adorable! Was there, per chance food that was being jumped for in that picture :)

Hendrix is not sure he likes the idea of such a handy place to get bathed. Or groomed. He prefers his natural 'fro and a party at the beach. But he did request a post-haircut picture just to show his classy side.

    But I digress.

I like the Kashmir White of the two. I also think a black granite could be smashing. Mostly I think everyone's dogs are wonderful and cute.

beagles, Sundae dances every morning and every night when it is chow time! No need for the food to even be there! Her belly is her clock, so she'll just start dancing when it is time to be fed.
I was walking Sundae one day when a man walked by me and said "Aww a beagle. God made them so cute so you don't kill them!" I still love that saying to this day.

I haven't read all the posts because I didn't want to be swayed one way or the other. hee hee. I prefer the Kashmir White only because you already have so much brown in the room with the cabinets and tile. The white would brighten things up a little and go with the blue walls better, IMO.

Now to go and read what everyone else voted for . . . .

Hahah chicagoans, I don't know if M&B are really going to love their new grooming tub either for the same reason! I think they'd prefer a nice mud bath to roll around in to better exfoliate and soften the fur ;) Hendrix is very cute, both with the fancy haircut and without :)

bahacca I love that saying! I may have to adopt it. We found Bailey Beagle's perfect saying when we watched a few minutes of this silly Garfield movie and Garfield told his owner person "Love me, Feed Me, Never Ever Leave Me." I want to have a sign made of that for Bailey's crate because it is so much his motto! And I know what you mean about beagles knowing when food time is. M&B get a snack of sardines every night around 8:30 and at shortly before 8, Molly reminds us by going and sitting right smack dab in front of the center of the TV screen and staring us down. If we don't respond promptly, we get very polite little squeaks which grow increasingly less polite.

Thanks meowzer, of the two selected, it looks like Kasmir white is definitely emerging as a winner!

I vote for the beautiful Kashmir White but also suggest you repaint the walls. I feel you have enough brown in the cabinets and floors. I also love the look of the Kashmir White. Maybe someone can paint the walls and add the counters in a paint-shop type of way as a rough draft to show you that a chance in wall color is needed unless you absolutely love the color and then maybe when everything is in the room, it will look nice.

My beagle would like to change her vote to the labrador antique. It has that (bow) wow factor.

    I'm sorry.

Can you get your paws (sorry) on Amazon Star Blue granite?

hmmm, after seeing that one, marcolo, my beagle has arf a mind to change her vote again.

I sure hope so Marcolo! That would be the absolute pawfect (sorry) granite and tie everything in wonderfully. If there's any way I can get that one (and afford it) that one is it! Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention!

These guys agree: Amazon Star Blue is a doggone good choice!

    From Beagles

    Baron says..."I like the blue."

My sweet rescues Abby the Golden Retriever and adorable little black mutt Casey both prefer the Amazon Star Blue : ) so that's two more votes for ASB.

Another vote for the Amazon Star Blue as a good bridge for the other finishes.

Thanks everyone. If we can get our hands on Amazon Star Blue, that's what we're going to do. I think it will be perfect in the room, as long as we can find it!

Good luck finding that granite! It really is perfect for that space:-)

What if, in 5 years, you decide to paint the walls a different color?

    meowzer I guess I just won't repaint :)

There are still quite a few paint colors that would go with the ASB, tans, yellows, the whole spectrum of neutrals. Best wishes to you and your family. Those are some lucky pooches!!!! Applause from my two doggies : ) I think that baltic blue might be similar as well if you can't find ASB.

I don't like either of your two suggested choices for the room at all. The ASB is really nice. I previously had Blue Pearl for 15 years and loved it - it would look great in that room and you would never tire of it. I have Volga Blue now and really, really think it would make your room "pop" with the fabulous blue mica chunks. No more than it appears you need, you might fare really well going to all granite yards and granite fabricators in your area to see if they have partial slabs of any of these in their boneyard. We got a gorgeous partial slab of Verde San Francisco for our laundry room for about $5/sq. ft. from a boneyard (plus fabrication, of course).

Our English Bull Terriers vote for something blue, for sure! One of them absolutely can read a clock - she tells us (emphatically) when it is 6:00 p.m. for her Greenie toothbrush. Our dogs sleep in our bed, too. I'm sure we are not the only ones that have to remind our dogs that this is OUR king sized bed, not yours, so let us have some room to stretch, please!

Your dog room is creative and fantastic... you and your fur babies will so enjoy it!

I think Blue Pearl would be pretty, too. Whatever you do...leave the blue walls. They are so 'you' and beige would be boring! And boring is the last thing I would think of, after seeing all of your decorating choices...and your house plan! :)

Kinda' wish someone who Photoshops would slap a remnant of this on your doggies' counter top:

I was going to vote for the Tropic Brown as matching the ever-present beagle hair, but wow that ASB is perfect! what a great eye Marcolo!

my beagles passed away before the digital photo era so no online pics. If you haven't lived in a woodsy area before, maybe have a bunch of hydrogen peroxide on hand for the inevitable beagle/skunk investigations...ask me how I know...

While I love beagles, I have since switched to Australia Cattle Dogs as I find a herding breed easier to deal with lol

    cheers

Thanks everyone. We're having some little issues w/ exactly what is going on w/ all granite for our house right now, so we're trying to get those resolved before I go off to the granite yard. I may just abandon all granite companies I've talked to thus far and hunt down the first company I find w/ ASB!

lavender_lass we're unlikely to ever have a beige. Just not our style :)

mtnfever our beagles better not be going near any skunks! They're not really unsupervised outside ever (mainly because their are pretty attached and needy, since I work at home, they don't really get left alone ever). So, I'm hoping I can prevent skunk troubles!

    Beagles- LOL!

If you can't find the ASB, Blue Pearl might bring in the grays...didn't you say you were putting wire/metal cages in...or did I misread that? It was way back, somewhere in the post :)

Sounds like you've made up your mind to go with the blue, but I like the white or the black, only because there is already sooo much brown in the room.
