Are asking about the price of installing a kitchen? Or the price of installing cabinets?

If it's cabinets - mine is $1500 which actually turned out to be about 8% of the cost. This is in the Northern NJ area - using a NY installer.

We paid $2000 for installation of a lot of cupboards that cost $14000 from a custom shop. Minn. law allows us to buy home improvement products without state tax IF they're installed by seller. Essentially, this was a $1200 install.

I was curious to know what install prices were these days as well, we put ours up ourselves but here in Florida during the building boom a few years ago I think most prices started at around $2,000 unless it was a tiny kitchen. I think that has come down a bit. I know the good granite installers/fabricators were around $50 a sf & up then, but now you can get it done for $30 a sf. Of course the tricky part is weeding out the bad guys.

I got a quote for $400 for cabinet installation for a standard 10 by 12 kitchen. I ended up deciding to stick with my current cabinets, but the guy who is redoing the rest of the kitchen says that is about the going rate for someone that is NOT affiliated with a big box store or larger company.

I personally didn't mind hiring a "handyman" type to do it provided he had experience and references and the majority of people I got responses from quoted me about the same price. I'd say shop around and try to find a mom and pop type place or get referrals from friends. You never know who has a hubby that is good at that kind of stuff.

Most installers need to see a kitchen cabinet layout before they can quote a kitchen install. Some quote by linear feet and some quote per cabinet. Inset is always going to be more expensive to install bec they are not as forgiving. Are you going to scribe the ends of the cabinets to the walls or just use some scribe to cover the gaps? Do you have a 2 piece crown or a four piece crown? Do your cabinets have feet that may have to be trimmed or will you use shoe mold? How level are your floors and how straight are your walls? too many variables to get info like that on this forum. About all you'll get here are ranges. I've spent $2500 all the way up to $6500 on a range of ktichens, but that's just me. I'm sure you'll find others that have spent more and less...

I've gotten 2 quote for cabinet only installs. They ranged from $65 - $75 per cabinet, including molding and light rails. One quoted an additional $200 for hardware, the other didn't. Plywood was extra.

Correction: Our cabinet install was about $1500, not $2000. The sales tax rebate brought it down to under $1000. Sorry about that. The guy who finished the cab surface was $2000, so add that to the $14,000 for the cabs. (We were going to do DIY finish and install, but the awful summer weather plus a time crunch made us get out our precious credit card.)

There's no such thing as a "standard" kitchen. :) Every one is unique, even if they are in the same cookie cutter tract homes next to each other. Kitchen A may be 10 x 12 with 30" wall cabinets going under a soffit and no drawer bases or fridge panels while "the same" 10 x 12 kitchen B may have 36" wall cabinets, stacked crown molding to the ceiling, double sided peninsula cabinets and a boxed in refrigerator.

The lowest price kitchen install that my cabinet installer has done has been $600 for a very very basic kitchen with zero crown molding and no shoe molding. THe highest priced install was around $11,500 for a rather large kitchen, pantry, and buffet area with a pretty complex design and uber stacked crown molding. (I do mostly lower cost kitchens averaging around 15K worth of cabinets with around a 2-3K install fee, excluding any electrical or plumbing needs.)

The details make the difference. And I would NOT want a "handyman" doing cabinet installs unless he was an expert trim carpenter and understood how to scribe or fit fillers to make the install look professional. A poor install can make a 100K kitchen look like total crap (as some on here have found to their dismay) while a good quality install can make a 10K kitchen look like that 100K kitchen wished it could!

The big box stores will charge per box, but then up-charge everything else -- toe kick, crown, etc.
I am in CT, $100 per linear foot is average. But, as Live Wire said, each kitchen is different.
5% of cabinet sounds low and may depend on the mark-up of the cabinets. So, 5% of what? Let's say you buy a $15,000 in cabinets, at 5% your install will be $750.00. You have to wonder what kind of a job you'll get for that price. Not to mention who's showing up at your house!
When we price out a kitchen for our clients, we include cost of cabinets, installation, all trim, accessories, etc. Everything is up-front, no bait & switch. When you go to a big box, or a larger cabinet co., they have a basic install rate, i.e. per box, per linear foot and then charge extra for crown, filler, toekicks, hardware. However, you get the price of install after you purchase the cabinets.
Also, the better the cabinet the more somebody should charge for install, since there will be more detail, tighter tolerances, etc...
