Your thoughts? Sink shape? Island shape?

Hi again (for the millionth time - thanks for your patience). So with good feedback and lots of post reading I've concluded that the prep sink ought to be at the rangetop end of the sink.

Now - what shape for the sink and island?

We have a curved staircase at one end of the kitchen so the island has to get narrower there somehow. I don't like a straight cut - that's what our current island has and we're tired of it. So I thought of two island shape options: bowed and rectangular with curve at the end.

Bowed is nice symetry wise. I might need to bow it more to get the island narrower on the stair end.

Curved one end bugs me a little but... I could run the cabinet all the way across at the range top end if I wanted.

Now for sink shape...

I'd like a rectangle but... I was thinking that it would be best if the faucet could be mounted diagonally so you can use the sink from either corner. Does round look ok? Any other ideas? That little dot is my mock up of faucet placement :-).

We could also just forget the prep sink entirely. We'll have a nice stages sink for the main sink anyway. Anybody think that's the best idea?

Here is my suggestion , based on our island
Ours is shaped like the top picture.
I like it.
Our sink is in the position you have indicated, but is a single bowl (standard rectangular) with a drainboard to the right (as you stand along the long side of the island).

I like this very much. The sink is large enough to really use as a secondary sink. When we prep on the island, it is right there. I like the built in drainboard too, as it is good place for the colander or to defrost things.

Have you thought about making kind of a partial circle on that stair end of the island? I have an unusually shapped space.

I have to say I love us in a 1/2 circle for eating (family of 4). The all in a bar line just isn't nearly as conducive for family time. We just about always all 4 dine together.

You could probably get a nice size circle on the end. Either raised or at counter height.

Just a thought!
Here's mine in the early stages. 4 barstools fit comfortably around a cirle with a 3 foot radius. I'll see if I can figure out how to post the layout pdf I have.

Thank you for the responses. DD and I are experiencing one of the greatest joys of a reno---figuring out how to make every half inch count. When she started on this project she knew every inch could matter and is now afraid that she will soon be down to obsessing over millimeters. She has decided that her sink size and placement is the key to her entire kitchen. If she can get the sink far enough to the right on her long wall, she can shift the DW to the left of the sink and get a trash pullout on the right. The latest iteration of the plan calls for a sink base no wider than 30" with the goal to achieve the most sink space possible and still get that DW on the left. From measuring her cookies sheets and roasting pans 22" x 15 1/2" (16" would be better) is the least rectangle that she thinks is functional. I was up into the wee hours last night looking on line and Elkay had the best website for stating exactly the minimum size base cabinet for each sink. In general, I'm estimating that an effective interior sink width of 22" would be found with an overall 24" wide sink which would then require at least a 27" wide cabinet. So the best that she can hope to get in her 30" sink base would be a 27" wide sink that has an effective interior width of 25" or so. Most brands of sinks, though, seem to jump from offering 24" wide to 30" wide with nothing in between. Has anyone seen a 27" wide sink available anywhere? Thanks, again.

The big island in the Kristine's photos certainly is lovely and not at all too big...for her space...But it won't be lovely if it overcrowds your space! But you know how I feel on this issue. The L island will look, IMHO, as if you're using every last possible inch to fill with island, and I don't think that's a good look, or will make a comfortable room. Not only shouldn't you block the traffic to the powder room/basement/laundry, but the path shouldn't be too winding and have to work around chairs and island corners.... 42" wide island is a lot of good wonderful work space. Map out a space on your floor that's 6 ft long and 42" wide and take a look. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Buehl, Studioren said a corner cabinet, so the S405 won't fit. However, I do not see why she has to go as small as 21". We fit the 30"-wide (exterior dimension) Blanco Diamondprecis silgranit sinto into our corner location. We did notch the sides of the cabinet to get it to fit. BTW, love my sink and love the corner location! But I'm in the "rectangular sink camp" and Studioren asked about a D-shape sink in a corner, but I think her question centers more about the corner factor. Really, I think 21" is too small. I suggest that Studioren post a new thread, entitled something like "What is the biggest sink to fit in a 36" CORNER cabinet?", rather than tack onto this thread which is solely about pros and cons of D-shape sinks.

What I like best about mine is having one. Period. But I also like that it is large enough to fit a large pot or colander when needed, small enough to give me plenty of space in my island counter and my cabinet underneath. Mine is about 15x15 or 16x16 and seems a good size for me. I would go a little bigger, but not smaller --especially if you are putting and instant hot at the prep sink. Mine has a corner faucet (with pulldown sprayer -- don't forget spraying for rinsing veggies, etc.) with soap dispenser att he opposite corner. An instant hot there too would be a bit cramped, especially if you also have an air switch there.

Oh, on sink shape.

The appliance guy convinced me that the island sink should be the same shape as a the main sink. So both of mine are quadrangles :)

I don't think it would matter much.. Just get one big enough (like 15") if you are going to have one. Otherwise, its pretty much just good for icing down a couple of bottles of wine.

Thanks everyone. I don't know why this decision is torturing me so much. I found another shape I like - the five sided like Buehl has. And then started wondering if I need a prep sink at all. My neighbor had an island as long as ours but wider and she didn't do one. Grrr. For some reason it just bugs me that the prep sink will be in my work triange because it means other people will be in my way when they use it. And it's like 38" away from the main sink. But it does seem more functional near the range top.

This is the last thing that needs to be decided so the cabinet order can go to factory.

Maybe you ought to stop thinking about it as a "prep" sink. Sounds like you won't be using it for prepping, if I remember correctly. Maybe it'll stop bugging you so much. How about thinking of it as the "secondary sink", or "guest sink" or "handwashing sink?"

For me, I couldn't prep at a single-bowl sink shared with the cleanup zone. I know the Stages sink is big, but you'll be washing veggies, draining pasta, etc, in the same bowl with dirty dishes. The Stages looks cool, but for me it would only work for prep. I wish I had that kind of space for such a big prep sink!;) I would need a separate sink.

Maybe you don't need a separate sink at all. Is there another sink nearby in the house that others could use? (I'm just trying to help! ;) )
