I just love your kitchen so I thought I'd ask a few questions if you don't mind.

-First, you said your knobs were Top Knobs, Dakota collection. Can you be more specific as to which bronze knob you used?

-Second, you said your grout is Mobe Pearl from The Tile Shop. Where is the Tile Shop or is it online? By the way, did the grout ever lighten up? I love the pics of it.

-Next, what granite did you end up going with? I'm torn between granite and soapstone. The granite seems to be cheaper in our area. Yours looks great with the white cabs.

-Lastly, what color did you go with on the walls in your kitchen?

We have a 14 yr. old kitchen with white cabs, and we're trying to do some updating. I wish I could just move your kitchen in!

Yes, of course. I've gotten so much help here, I'm so glad to be able to help someone else for a change! :) I have to get ready for work soon and will have to look up the knobs info tonight, but I can answer everything else:
We have The Tile Shop in our town, but they have a web site. I think it's tileshop.com. I'm bet you can order the grout over the web. I can find out the brand later today if that will help, but I think they probably only carry one brand. It lightened very slightly, but I love it now!! Thank goodness!! I would not want it any lighter.
The granite is Giallo Oramental aka "New" Venetian Gold. It does not really have gold in it, like regular Venetian Gold. It is more brown, gray and white. It was one of the "stock" granites where we bought it. I had looked at Bianco Antico, which I love, but it was much more expensive. I love all the colors in the NVG and am so glad we went with it. The wall are Relaxed Khaki from Sherwin Williams.

Thanks for the info. I'm off to work too. I'm going to check out that granite. I think it's hard to find the right granite with white cabs. We put oak bb on the island, but we're still stuck on the perimeter. My husband is finishing his work on adding trim to our cabinets to change them out a bit. I have a med. shade of green on walls that I like, but I'm thinking a change of color might help with the "change" that the kitchen is in need of. And I think I've decided oil rubbed knobs is my favorite for hardware. Thanks again!

Well, first off you need to be able to put your pictures on the world wide web. You can post them on one of the photo hosting sites, or if you have one, your own web site. If you have only a picture or two, you can upload them to the GardenWeb Gallery. Once you have pictures on the web, you can then copy the link that appears in the address box and paste it into the "Optional Link URL:" that will show up on the second page of the form that you use to start a new thread. If you are on a photo hosting site, you have to do something to make the pictures public, so we can see them without logging in. Is it a myth? Hmmmm... I would have to say it's really yet another color concept taken from the two-dimensional world of fine arts that does not apply to three-dimensional architectural color. The idea is to use light and dark, value, to create two-dimensionally the sense of depth and dimensional that is inherent and naturally defines our three-dimensional world. Our vision system is three-dimensional as well. We see from two points of view at the same time so we see things three dimensionally. Because of that factor, painting a room, structure, the built environment is very, very different from trying to duplicate and express what is experienced in the three-dimensional world via painting on canvass or other artistic modes. i.e. The color strategies that make for a good painting do not contribute to what is needed to purposefully color the built environment so it is humanly supportive AND aesthetically pleasing at the same time. But people like to think they do. In our society we, by default, have turned to various creative fields like fine arts, graphic design, and interior design for color knowledge for help in applying color to structure. That is a mistake. Color can't shrink a room any more than it can add square footage and "expand the room". At this point, the nursery rhyme that dark colors advance and cool colors recede is so ingrained that we need to stop, experience, absorb, and then articulate the affects we feel from color in order to determine our real color truths - separate those truths from all the ridiculousness out there in blogs, on websites, ebooks, and whatever. Lots of people feature themselves as color design experts but really aren't. As a result, there's a bizarre repetitiveness to "color tips and tricks" that these expert color designer types can recite but aren't able to substantiate or explain. "Color tips and tricks" like dark colors shrink a room are a dime a dozen and usually emptier than a bottle of Jack under a drunk. Real color truths, authentic, individual color truths can be expressed and termed as "tolerances". And that's what we need to work thru and examine for your space. The room is generously sized. Does anyone really believe two gallons of red paint can "shrink" the volume of a 14 1/2 ft. X 20 ft space? If so, then I have some magic beans priced to sell. When it comes to strong color and dark color it really is a matter of individual tolerance. The walls of a three dimensional space with strong and/or dark color could be described by some people as closing in and overwhelming the space. But does that really translate to "dark wall colors WILL make a room feel smaller" and conversely "light wall colors WILL make a room feel bigger"? I don't think it does. It simply describes an individual perception and response to strong, dark wall colors. And that's what you have to determine. What do you feel your response will be to strong, dark color on the walls of your 14 1/2 ft x 20 ft room? Maybe your answer isn't that you'll feel overwhelmed and closed in by red walls. Maybe for you it will define your space so it feels cozy, homey, finished, sophisticated, complete.

deedles: I didn't find GW until after we had a floorplan and the cabinets were ordered, so no floorplan thread or help from the wonderful GW kitchen community. However, I'm not sure how much could have been tweaked given our parameters,and I am VERY happy with how things turned out. I do wonder now and then what advice people might have offered regarding our layout. That said, here is a copy of the floorplan. It is not exactly right, but close enough: Our sink base is 36". I feel like I have plenty of room between the sink and the stove, but I do most of my prep on the island. I love that island. It has given us so much flexibility that we lacked before, and is plenty big for anything I want to do. Let me know if you have any more questions.

We got the plain black walnut, not the rustic. The top has maybe on knot. The bottom has just a few more. The final coat of poly was put on our floors yesterday so I haven't been out to our house but will probably go tomorrow after it dries. I will take some more close up shots and get the brand of the stain for you then. I still have one more coat of Waterlox to put on... Sunday night I put what I thought was the final coat- 25% original and 75% Satin. After seeing it dry I can't believe I'm saying this (because I originally wanted a matte mineral oil finish) but I think I'm going to do a 50/50 finish or maybe even 75% original and 25% satin. I think the shine makes the wood look prettier... The satin has a slightly cloudy finish. Still pretty but I think I like a little shine better. LOL! I will probably put another coat on on Saturday. Either way, the wood is gorgeous! I'll let you know how it goes! Jill

Hey Lake Girl- I found the hardward info. The cup pulls are from Top Knob #1209 and the knobs are #1230, both in oil rubbed bronze finish. I can't find the latch info, but I think they are from TK as well, in the same finish.
I like the NVG with white cabinets because it has a lot of white in it. It also has the chocolate brown to pull in the ORB from the hardware. Can't wait to see your finished pictures. How much longer do you have until it's all done?

Who knows when we'll be finished (are we ever really finished :). I'll check on the knobs today. I won't need latches, since my cabs are partial overlay (we're talking 1997). But they still look pretty good and saves a bundle on updating. Can I ask you how thick your granite is? We don't have much experience with granite. And what width is the grout on your backsplash? I wonder if you can send me a pic to my email so I can see it upclose? And I'll send you a pic of my progress. Thanks again for your help!

Lisa, I will take some upclose pictures on Friday. The final coat of poly is being put on our floors today, so I can't get in there until then. I do know the granite is 3cm or 1 1/4 inches thick. I have no idea what thickness of the grout it is, but it is on the thicker side. I will measure it when I get in there and let you know.

jillandmatt, do you have pictures from the rest of your build posted on GW? I looked on monthly progress thread in Building a Home forum, but didn't see any. Your kitchen is so pretty, I would love to see choices you've made in other areas.

I haven't posted pictures of anything but the kitchen, but I would be happy to. Our builder is also putting new pictures of the finished house on his website in the next few weeks. His website is stonecrofthomes.net and our house is the "Wooldridge". There are already a few on there from several months back-under construction.

Thanks for the pics, Jill! I really like the width of your grout. The other idea I had for the backsplash was a tongue and groove horizontal wood look I saw in a magazine. It was a house in Beaufort, SC (very coastal looking). Also, I'm thinking of going with the giallo ornamental. If we do, I hope I can find a slab with some white in the background like you have. The quote I got from one place the other day was $36-$37 a square foot. Does that sound about right? (I also love soapstone but the cost is up there. We could DIY it, but I can't find any in our area.) Thanks again!!!
