We did not put in a 4" backsplash. I prefer the look of the tile (if that's what you use) down to the counter than tile + granite.

If you like the look and it won't overwhelm your kitchen, you might think about a full granite backsplash...granite from counter to upper cabinets. I've seen several of these...some work very well...but not all granites lend themselves to it nor do all kitchens.

I just went with the four inch backsplash with no tile, just paint. I couldn't make up my mind on a backsplash and really like the idea of being able to change my paint color on a whim. Also, we don't do a lot of greasy or messy cooking.

That's completely a matter of preference. It can be, and has been, done both ways, and both look very acceptable. It just depends on your particular taste.

Bill has posted some pictures of this before. I found some in what I believe to be a portfolio of his. Personally I believe it can work, but I much prefer to tile the whole backsplash and did just that in our remodel. My contractor tried to get me to do the 4 inch only or tile above it, but I didn't like the look. There is one advantage to the 4" backsplash. Granite/quartz creates a very tight dirt and liquid (essentially) impervious corner where the wall and counter meet. If you use tile that corner won't be quite as straight, neat or "impervious", but I don't think it's much of an issue.
