Anyone Have Mid Continent Cabinets? Looking for Feedback Please.

I searched and found one GW post about installing Mid Continent (DreamItCanBe here http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0811310723595.html). And a question about the company from 2009 (and I understand the drawers/boxes are better quality now).

Just wondering if anyone else has experience and/or feedback?

Found at a local non-box cabinet shop. They are based in MN. Don't have a final quote yet, but was told 70% of this particular shops' sales are Mid Continent based on their economical price & they are popular as they offer free paint upgrade + free soft close/full ext. drawers (and the shop tosses in the soft close doors) + the manufacturer offers free hardware (limited choice).

A web search didn't turn up many results.

All I know is that a group of stores in Mich here [The Kitchen Shop] sells a ton of it. They have a brand higher and a brand lower,[dura supreme and Kountry wood]... Extracting from that...this is mid ranged product...check your warranty..should get a better deal than just free soft close/full extension. I'd shop around.

We have them. We ordered from a local lumber yard/building center. We are in a rural community of about 27000 so there are no big box here in town. They all start about an hour away.

We got an all plywood upgrade, they have soft close, full extension drawers. There was an option for soft close doors but we passed as we have very few doors.

We went with simple slab doors because I don't like the dust and grime that catches in beadwork or along stiles.

They were quick. The boxes were well constructed. I am pleased enough. It really depends on what YOU are expecting from your cabinets.

Although we have not yet purchased our cabinets, mid-continent is on the short list. Their price for quality is very good and for DH and I, the only thing holding us back is that we aren't in love with their door style options for the look we are trying to achieve. Additionally, we aren't thrilled with the stain options / finish on the doors as much as a few other lines. That said, I know multiple people who have installed mid-continent cabinets over the past two years and their kitchens are beautiful. The owners have no complaints about finish issues or box/door/drawer construction. Everything seems to be holding up well for them.

All the names provided above are pretty well known and have dealers almost everywhere. If you find a norcraft dealer you are looking at Mid continent just so you know. Midcontinent dealers have to order more often to get that name so they normally get the cabinets at a cheaper price. They pass the savings on or they may try to keep it. Some dealers on here will tell you that a indepent store with Kraftmaid gets it at a lower price then the big box stores. I do not know that for certain but I do sell Allwood brand cabinets known to be sold by costco. Allwood charges more to Costco according to my Allwood sales rep because they provide more service and support to costco then they do me. So that is probably true for Kraftmaid. Supply is greater than demand in the remodeling world so prices are lower then a few years ago. Some cabinet makers have adjust prices quickly others have not. Independent dealers have to keep their doors open so their prices are in many cases just trying to stay alive as demand slowly matches up to supply. Larger companies like lowes and home depot have an army of people that are comparing what other companies are charging and the result is each company tries to pretty much offer what another large company is doing for about the same price. Smaller companies that do not spend the money to build their name nationaly to the extent of the brand names thrown around here are usually a good bet. I read a lot of posts of people buying from what I call shade tree cabinet makers. It seems most are happy when they post their end results. I am teased all the time by sales reps I have to many companies and it is not a good idea. I run my business from school of Hard Knox everything I know is from being hands on and learning as I go. Many people on here would call me a fly by night dealer because I have not made it big to afford a large showroom to show off with. That really has nothing to do with my knowledge of available products and my understanding of remodeling as I have gone to school for construction management and have built 100 plus homes in my 20's as the project manager. That means I did not have the money to invest to start off going full speed at the start. I have had to learn what companies were out their how to get permission to sell the products. I have had to figure out which companies stand behind their products and which do not. I have had to learn who sells things at a better price then the next guy to. If you do not make the cabinets you buy low and sell higher for a combination of the poduct value and the value of your service to design and occasionaly be involved in the remodeling. I have seen the prices for and been involved in the ordering of products for about 40 cabinet companies. I currently offer to people I know about 20 of the 40. Here is a list of what would fit your question that may bring a different answer then anyone else on here. Niche market brands you will not hear much of here that are low priced are Brandom (limited lifetime warranty, and 39" wall cabinets available) Kabinart (plywood boxes only 10 year warranty decent sku availability) Bridgewood- Advantage Series (10 year warranty, they make their own doors for framed and frameless cabinets for all your European lovers out there, so you can specify special width or height (max 96") for a cost of about $100 extra per cabinet, they make proper wainscott panels for the backs of islands. True raised panels can be added to the sides of all exposed cabinets, and they have about 60 available modifications. I can give any of the cabinet companies listed above a run for their money and give you more customization to make it fit without any fillers if I wanted to. 6 square is a good in stock cabinet for the money if you like the door style and colors offered. Their cabinets are made as good as anyones. The roll out trays are even soft close full extension dovetail drawer boxes.

I had Mid Continent cabinets in my old kitchen and can't recommend them. They sent us the wrong pieces and it took months for the correct ones to finally get sent to us. Dealing with them was a nightmare. Then when they finally got the right cabinets they had forgotten a filler piece we ordered so we thought we could get their stain shipped to us so our contractor could do something with that and they wanted $300 just for the stain. After all that, within two years, we had a door that was broken from its hinges. It could have just been a bad door but the whole experience with them was aweful.

Wow, I have Kraftmaid Maple Shaker cabs with a Bisque glaze in my Co-op and Mid-continent in my weekend house. About the same amount of doors and my Kraftmaid cost me approx. $9,000. I didn't want any of the pull outs because you lose too much interior space but have all the other bells and whistles you named above. My Mid Cont. have the Blum soft shut drawers, plywood, dove tail etc. etc. Plus two cabinets, upper and lower corners, have the lazy susans on both shelves. If I could have gotten the same deal two years ago I wouldn't have spent that money on Kraftmaid simply because of this: For 20 years before I renovated my Co-op I lived with crap cabinets: formica covered particle board. And guess what? I never had a problem. Ever. No warping, no problems with doors or drawers. It was just ugly crap and I wanted Maple. But I learned from that that sometimes we all over-think things and worry about things that don't make that much of a difference. If I were you I'd ask Mid-Cont. guy about all of their sales on diff. doors and unless you're in love and must have the ones you're talking about, you could even save more money. My Mid-Continent cabs., before the sale, cost $9,963.45. Sale price: $4,858.18. Gotta love that.

Thanks for taking the time to post. Might be mid-range, but the quality seemed better than many other lines I've looked at. The offer is not just free soft close/full ext drawers. It's also free paint upgrade which is quite valuable to me as I'm planning all white. Is there something particular in the warranty you think I should take note of? What brand did you end up with?

First, I loved the accent in your backsplash. Very nicely done. I looked at each of the pictures you linked.

You said you are "pleased enough" and while your choices were limited by location, would you do it again with Mid Continent? "Pleased enough" just makes me pause a bit.

Also, are your trash, recycle and cookie sheet pullouts aftermarket or from Mid Continent?

What I'm expecting -- well, aside from super low end and super high end, as long as they are sturdy, look nice (to me) and function well, they do their job as cabinets and will work for me. Too simplistic to some people I'm sure.

Again, thank you BOTH and if anyone else has feedback I'd love to read it!

well ESPECIALLY if you are getting white painted-some makers require you sign a disclaimer with regards to chips and flakes and cracks of paint...definitely find out about that. as far as my choices-I have two homes-both need kitchens-I am bummed in Mich because home values are still dropping. I have lots of ideas and have been researching up the you know what.the home 2 doors down from us was listed this week...it has a 70's kitchen...listed at $157.00 a square foot...I am keen to see for how much or if the house sells..it may help in my decisions. No one would like the kitchen..but if the place sells..then the kitchen doesn't matter-do as you wish in remodeling, lower price point or whatever. If the place does not sell...one must ask....are people wanting everything up and running and looking nice....questions galore. We just put in $6000 of windows..now finishing up staining and trimming out..kitchens are beckoning.

Mid Continent is a good value cabinet. They are considered a low- mid level semi custom cabinet. They are built well, and have a lifetime warranty. They will have you sign a finish wavier for the paint (standard with most manufacturers), only for the hairline cracks at the joints from the expansion/ contraction. You can upgrade from their base cabinet to make them a little better. For what you get they have one of the better price points out there.

"Pleased enough" was not meant to be derogatory. I really like them. It's is just hard to determine the expectations of others on a forum like this. I live in a modest, turn of the century farmhouse. We have not scrimped but we are also not the "spare no expense" types either. My expectations for cabinets sound a lot like yours. They needed to look nice, last well, work well. I was not in need of a lot of custom doodles and options.

Things I liked: they seem sturdy enough, they had plywood upgrade to 3/4 inch thickness I think, they were well packed, they had enough variety for us.

Things I didn't like: there are a couple of my doors that have little marks along the edges (not very visible at all unless you have the door open) from shipping (I totally did not have the option to unpack every box and whine about how they looked to the nth degree). Some of the drawers don't close quite as aggressively as they need to so with the soft close I end up "finishing closing" them sometimes.

As for the pull outs and stuff, they are built by me and put on pull out hardware available from Lee Valley. That's a whole other issue and if you go that way you might want some feedback about them.

All in all I am very pleased with my MidContinent cabinets. They were a good value. They are DECIDEDLY better than what we had. I am not particularly hard on things so they will last a long time. They had a look that I wanted and they were fast.

Pros on Mid Continent Cabinets:
Quick order turnaround (3 weeks for me)
Great paint finish (I liked it much better than Kraftmaid)
More custom sizes without custom up-charges
Great customer service

Good luck! I've had my cabinets now for 2 months, still love them!
