I have the Monogram Advantium. It's a multi-purpose oven. It can act as a convection oven - basically just a second oven and it can also broil. I use this for anything small where there's no point in heating up the big oven. Mine can hold a 9x13 pan of lasagna. It's also a regular microwave oven.

The speedcook part combines microwave, convection and high powered halogen lights top and bottom. There's an onboard computer that decides how much of each to use for a particular food. The convection and halogen brown, broil or roast while the microwave speeds up the cooking process. We use the speed cook part all the time and we absolutely love it. Browned crispy fish sticks and fries in 4 minutes, crescent rolls in 2-3, etc. It does the best baked potatoes ever.

The oven also can act as a moist or dry warming oven which I've used several times but the problem is that when it's warming it can't be doing another cooking job. So I'm getting a new Kitchen Aid warming drawer with my remodel that also does slow cooking like a crock pot. It has a few other features like proof that I use when setting dough to rise and melt or soften for butter.

All in all, it's like a swiss army knife. It's the most expensive thing in our kitchen and was worth all the money I saved up to buy it. We absolutely love it. We're glad we got the 220v version too. My mom has the 110 and there isn't enough power.

I tried out the different models available at a local appliance store. The Electrolux was nice but the controls were confusing. The Advantium controls were the easiest to use of all the ones I tried with the most features.

Check out the appliances forum. There are a couple of good threads on just this topic. Try "speed oven" or "convection microwave." I only have a 24" wide space and I might be able to do the miele but it is expensive and I don't think as intuitive as the advantium. But 15 minute baked potatoes - wow!

So this "swiss army knife of appliances" does replace the microwave in addition to other cool stuff? Thanks for explaining, brittu.

Just remember that if you need a second oven and a MW, the combined appliance will not work for you. When it's being used as a second oven, you cannot use it as a MW (or as a warmer). When you're using it as a MW, you won't have a second oven.

If you don't need a second oven and MW at the same time, then is a great option!

If this is your only oven, I would not recommend you get just it...unless, of course, you never use a MW or an oven or at least not at the same time.

In my case, I frequently need a second oven as well as a MW, so I have double ovens + MW. One of my ovens is a speedcook oven (Trivection) that uses MWs in combination with convection. The other oven is a convection oven. I love my Trivection oven and use it all the time. I just wish the bottom oven was also Trivection! (No, it doesn't work as a standalone MW.)

I have the Advantium 110 volt. It's ok. The main reason I got it was so I could get rid of my toaster oven. The speedcook option sometimes does strange things to food, and I don't find it much quicker than standard cooking methods. Maybe the 220 volt is better for speedcooking. Mostly I just use the microwave settings and the standard oven settings, and it works well for both.

Right now I just have a range and most of the time it is sufficient. Due to dietary differences (vegetarian vs non-vegetarian) my significant other and I often cook somewhat separate (or even completely separate) meals. So from time to time we clash over oven usage. We only occasionally use the microwave (him more than me). If I can cover the microwave need and also add a bonus oven, that would be very beneficial for us. I do not want a countertop microwave (limited space = limited counter space) and I would love to get rid of our over the range microwave in favor of a real range hood.

So if I understand correctly, some of these combination appliances are microwaves and convection ovens, while others are ovens that use microwave technology to speed up the cooking? Specifically, anything labeled a microwave and convection oven is probably a microwave + a convection oven? And anything labeled a speed oven may not necessarily also have microwave functionality? And on the microwave + convection ovens, do they function as normal ovens as well? Or only convection? I have only used the convection feature on my oven a few times and haven't really mastered understanding when I should and should not use it or when it really benefits me the most. Mostly I just want a microwave and sometimes an additional oven.
