I assume that the Butler Pantry is mostly a countertop with some storage for dishes and serving pieces and glassware. And that the Pantry holds canned goods, dry foods, etc. If the sky's the limit and it's new construction, put a small sink in the neck corridor that serves the dining room, no matter what you end up calling the passageway. And incude a window/pass through into the Great room from the Butler/Pantry, perhaps with semi-transparent glass so that the interior space is not so dark and so that you have a short cut to move wine glasses, snack crackers, etc. between the two points.

Watch out for a foodstuffs pantry that is too large--there is a temptation to overbuy to fill it up. Personally, I'm trying to underbuy so that I can keep track of the inventory and not let food go out of date. Also, it forces me to make better use of my trips to the store so that I don't dawdle looking for stuff to stock up on. There are few places in the U.S. these days that don't have a store nearby if you run out of something.

That's a very big "Pantry." If you're a manic formal tablesetter, as some of us are, you might switch the "butler pantry" and the "pantry" because you've got so much stuff. Plus you can also house the awkward items often stored in pantries on GW such as stew pots, roasters, etc. Consider tablecloth and table leaves storage. I saw a fabulous photo of a vertical tablecloth cupboard, with rods so that tablecloths hung instead of sat in piles. The owner had tags pinned to each cloth to indicate sizes. Seasonal items--punch bowls, centerpieces, extra dishes, etc. could also go into such a generous General Purpose Pantry. Meanwhile, gotta keep the important ingredients very near the cooking zones so that you don't feel like you're taking a hike just to get a can of mushrooms or another bullion cube. There's a long distance between your breakfast area and a box of cereal at the back of what's indicated as Pantry.

I have a fairly large pantry in my current house. Probably 2/3 is filled with non-food items. I love the idea of the tablecloth storage and esp the table leaf storage. A very good point about the distance from the breakfast nook to the pantry. Quite a hike to get cereal/kids snacks to the table.

I would switch the mudroom portion and the LR portion of that complex so you are not trooping by clean clothes or such a long distance in dirty and or wet shoes. Keep the clean clothes at the clean end :)

The kitchen doesn't look bad, though there seems to be a lot of counter space in the clean-up area that will seldom be used. ... But could you have found a more inconvenient place for the broom closet? The laundry room altogether looks inconveniently located, but it can be worked with. What are you going to do with spills and broken glass? Go all the way around and through the mudroom and past the laundry baskets/heaps?

If you're happy with the general locations of the walls, I'd try redesigning around a door from the kitchen into the laundry where that angle is. I'd also make the mudroom a walk through area so that there's no getting in from the garage without walking past the hooks.

Because I see these as greater challenges, I don't want to talk too much about the kitchen proper yet.

I'd want to walk in from the garage straight into a mudroom that was closely adjacent to the pantry so that I didn't have to haul groceries a long distance.

If this is a multi story home, then an upstairs laundry room makes more sense. You'll have the clean clothes created where the dirty clothes are without hiking up and down stairs a dozen times.

The garage seems oddly proportioned. 22' deep is completely unrealistic with today's larger cars. We did ours at 30' deep to be able to have a workbench and walkway across the back. Standard door sizes are 9' or 10' (or 20' for a double) wide. The 10' wide is more forgiving for parking larger autos. So, plan in increments of those sized doors, with space in between for the headers to have a good solid king post and a traffic path. A realistic 3 car garage size is a minimum 24' deep (virtually no walkway across the back) and 34' wide. That will give you room to move between cars, but no room for stuff storage unless you use one of the bays for that alone. Moving up to the 30' deep like we did gives you room for a workbench and storage across the back with a 48" walkway---which some might find too spacious, but we love. It gives room to pass by someone when they've got the weedeater on the bench, etc.

I couldnt figure out the transition between outside/inside and garage/house from the drawing, there seems to be some lines missing?

The broom closet is a total waste of space. I figured that depending on the fridge that I decided on I could always recess a non-counter depth fridge into that area or I could expand the "butler pantry" into a real butler pantry and include a wet bar (possibly). This is just a floor plan that I found (I didn't design it) and I am hoping to use it for my starting point for discussions with the designer.

There is a lot of counter space near the clean up area. I am hoping to minimize my upper cabinets and use a lot of drawers. Can't really figure out where I would put my everyday drinking glasses.

Up until now I have always thought that I would go with a range but I am sort of liking the double wall ovens on an angle.

I guess I'm a fan of open areas, especially for dining... even with a more formal dining room. I don't know how I'd feel about walking through the narrowish opening of the butlers pantry with platters to serve guests in the dining room and if guests want to help bring things in, get a drink, etc... it just seems a bit inconvenient.

I notice that there are three dedicated eating areas all in a row (Breakfast Room, Raised Bar behind sink and Formal Dining Room).

I understand the need for openness between the Kitchen and Great Room but perhaps it doesn't have to be a full-on eating bar. The two adjacent informal eating areas seem a bit redundant.

Without having to leave the depth of space for multiple seating at the bar, the Kink to the left in the whole Kitchen/Utility/Mudroom could be straightened out and that might solve some problems

Where's the refrigerator? Is it on the lower wall to the right of what appears to be the corner ovens?
