Hardwood floor Bad install?
Comments (35)Amidst the horror stories on this forum of contractors who shirk their responsibilities, there are regular stories of people who are paranoid of confronting their GC, who proceed to do so and have the GC completely agree with them and redo the problem area without question. You shouldn't necessarily assume that he'll react by storming off the job, especially given his high Houzz rankings, assuming they mean anything. Think through the possibilities carefully. If he's a lout, then if you bring it up now he could storm off the job. If he's a lout and you bring it up later, he'd just storm off the job later. And it sounds like you're calculating that he's potentially a lout, so you want to wait to bring it up so you get more done. If he's a good guy, then if you bring it up now he'll fix it. If he's a good guy and you wait to bring it up, he might say "hey, if you had told me sooner I would have fixed it, but now it's going to cost me a lot more because I've put trim in, etc., so you're stuck with it." THAT's what we're all trying to warn you about. You run the risk of alienating a good GC by waiting. That's neither fair nor reasonable. And you said you have confidence in him. Why, then, are you acting like you know he's a lout?...See MoreKEMPAS hardwood flooring - the good, the bad and anything else?
Comments (33)I had a kempas floor installed in the dining room and foyer in my newly built home in 2007. It still looks GORGEOUS. I only use warm water and a microfiber mop to clean and it looks amazing. The color is so rich and complements my warm golden yellow walls beautifully. I have not experienced any issues that the above responses have thank god. That being said, about a year after I moved in I ran into a fiend whom apparently knew one of the installers. She asked me how I liked my floor. I, of course, raved about it. She then went on to say that the installer HATED IT. They had to purchase extra due to the splitting that occurred when they were nailing it. This was news to me. The installer did a wonderful job despite his frustration and the floor has performed beautifully....See MoreDark hardwood vs lighter hardwood floors
Comments (61)When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time....See MoreKitchen flooring ideas with old house and original hardwood
Comments (8)You can use cork (either as a glue down tile or as a click together floor) to work nicely with the wood without competing with it. Cork is technically wood so it works well with other wood products but it is often "non-directional" in pattern so you don't have to worry about a clash of wood grain, etc. Cork can be the fast, cheap way to get a nice warm floor without paying thousands of dollars for in-floor radiant heat. Just a thought....See Moremarcydc
